Community case management of malaria: exploring support, capacity and motivation of community medicine distributors in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: In Uganda, community services for febrile children are expanding from presumptive treatment of fever with anti-malarials through the home-based management of fever (HBMF) programme, to include treatment for malaria, diarrhoea and pneumonia through Integrated Community Case Management (ICCM). To understand the level of support available, and the capacity and motivation of community health workers to deliver these expanded services, we interviewed community medicine distributors (CMDs), who had been involved in the HBMF programme in Tororo district, shortly before ICCM was adopted.

Tuberculosis transmission to young children in a South African community: modeling household and community infection risks.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis transmission is determined by contact between infectious and susceptible individuals. A recent study reported a 4% annual risk of child tuberculosis infection in a southern African township. A model was used to explore the interactions between prevalence of adult tuberculosis infection, adult-to-child contacts, and household ventilation, which could result in such a high annual risk of tuberculosis infection. METHODS: Number of residents per household and tuberculosis incidence were derived from a household census and community tuberculosis registers. Using the Wells-

Sexual assault support services and community systems: understanding critical issues and needs in the LGBTQ community.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals encounter social conditions that create important considerations for LGBTQ sexual assault victims. This exploratory, mixed-methods study examines the relationship between community attitudes toward LGBTQ persons and associated community responses to LGBTQ sexual assault victims. An online and paper-and-pencil survey (n = 130) and four focus group interviews (n = 14) are analyzed using frequency distributions and grounded theory methods. The central theme that emerged in focus group interviews, titled "low community awareness an

Communicating stereotype-relevant information: is factual information subject to the same communication biases as fictional information?

Factual information is more frequently read and discussed than fictional information. However, research on the role of communication in shaping stereotypes has focused almost exclusively on fictional narratives. In Experiments 1 and 2 a newspaper article containing information about heroin users was communicated along chains of 4 people. No stereotype-consistency bias was observed. Instead, a greater proportion of stereotype-inconsistent information was communicated than was stereotype-consistent or -neutral information. Three further experiments investigated explanations for the difference be

'Communication is everything I think.' Parenting a child who needs Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).

BACKGROUND: Anecdotal and research evidence suggests that professionals may not fully understand the perspectives of families of children who need or use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). This may impact on the provision of appropriate services. AIMS: The aim was to explore the lived experience of parents of children in Britain who used AAC, with particular emphasis on the ways in which children's need for and use of AAC impacts on family life and communication. METHODS & PROCEDURES: The parents/carers of 11 children aged 3-10 years, who lived in Britain and who were in the e

Why communication is crucial: meta-analysis of the relationship between safer sexual communication and condom use.

The purpose of this study was to quantitatively synthesize the growing literature on the relationship between safer sexual communication (SSC) among sexual partners and condom use, and to systematically examine a number of conceptual and methodological moderators of this relationship. Data from 53 articles published in 27 journals met criteria for the study. Fifty-five independent effect sizes coded from samples totaling N=18,529 were meta-analyzed. Results indicate that the mean sample-size weighted effect size of the SSC-condom use relation was r=.22, and a number of conceptual variables wer

Promoting environmental justice through community-based participatory research: the role of community and partnership capacity.

Community-based participatory research (CBPR) increasingly is being used to study and address environmental justice. This article presents the results of a cross-site case study of four CBPR partnerships in the United States that researched environmental health problems and worked to educate legislators and promote relevant public policy. The authors focus on community and partnership capacity within and across sites, using as a theoretical framework Goodman and his colleagues' dimensions of community capacity, as these were tailored to environmental health by Freudenberg, and as further modif

Emerging infections with community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in outpatients at an Army Community Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection typically occurs in chronically ill patients requiring long-term antimicrobial therapy or hospitalization. However, community-associated MRSA (CA-MRSA) necrotizing soft tissue infections seem to be increasing in incidence. Our aim was to describe the incidence and microbiologic characteristics of CA-MRSA isolates collected at an army community hospital. METHODS: We report a retrospective review of MRSA isolates identified during 1998-2003 at the microbiology laboratory of Moncrief Army Community Hospital that serves a co

Parent and teacher report of pragmatic aspects of communication: use of the children's communication checklist in a clinical setting.

The Children's Communication Checklist (CCC) was developed to provide an objective assessment of pragmatic aspects of children's communication difficulties. We aimed to (1) see whether the checklist provided valid and reliable information when completed by parents, and (2) consider its usefulness in a clinical context. Checklists were completed by parents and a professional who knew the child well for all 5 to 17-year-old referrals to a tertiary developmental paediatrics centre over a 31-month period. Children who were not yet speaking in sentences were excluded. From a sample of 151 children

Internal carotid-posterior communicating artery aneurysm associated with unusually short posterior communicating artery.

We report two cases of a ruptured internal carotid-posterior communicating artery aneurysm in which the ipsilateral posterior communicating artery is short and the P1 and P2 segments of the posterior cerebral artery are long. Unique angiographic and operative findings are described. Vertebral angiography with carotid compression is recommended to diagnose this rare variation. Recognition of this variation is important to avoid an inadvertent occlusion of arteries behind the aneurysm at the time of clipping. Copyright 1999 Harcourt Publishers Ltd.

Willingness to pay for community-based ivermectin distribution: a study of three onchocerciasis-endemic communities in Nigeria.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the willingness to pay (WTP) for local ivermectin distribution in a community financing framework. METHOD: Contingent valuation in three communities in Nigeria, using randomly selected household heads. WTP was elicited using a bidding game, and for collecting information on the households' socio-economic status, level of knowledge, priority ranking and perception of risk of contracting the disease, structured questionnaires were used. Ordinary least squares (OLS) multiple regression analysis was used to analyse factors associated with WTP. RESULTS: Between 92.1% and 9

Development of the Children's Communication Checklist (CCC): a method for assessing qualitative aspects of communicative impairment in children.

The Children's Communication Checklist (CCC) was developed to assess aspects of communicative impairment that are not adequately evaluated by contemporary standardised language tests. These are predominantly pragmatic abnormalities seen in social communication, although other qualitative aspects of speech and language were also included. Some items covering social relationships and restricted interests were incorporated, so that the relationship between pragmatic difficulties and other characteristics of pervasive developmental disorders could be explored. Checklist ratings were obtained for 7

Communication of risks: organization of a methylmercury campaign in the Cree communities of James Bay, Northern Quebec, Canada.

In the James Bay region of Canada, with the advent of extensive hydroelectric development, methylmercury contamination of fish has become a serious problem, having a direct impact on the Cree way of living. In 1982, the Cree Board of Health and Social Services of James Bay implemented a methylmercury exposure surveillance program in all Cree communities. Since that time, it has developed several educational tools on methylmercury contamination, including posters, pamphlets, and a video. In 1993 and 1994, Cree leaders, Community Health Representatives, medical staff, and other selected band mem

Prevalence of disabling conditions in a rural northern Thai community: a survey conducted by village health communicators.

This report presents a survey of disabling conditions conducted by village health communicators (VHCs) in 1989 in a rural northern Thai community. The disabled were first identified by a VHC and then examined clinically and socially by a health care team both to confirm the clinical diagnosis and to formulate an appropriate treatment plan. The overall prevalence rate of disabled persons was 6.3/1,000 population. The prevalence rate was higher for males than females and increased with age. Locomotor disability (48.8%) was the most commonly identified disabling condition, with visual disability

Household and community drivers of Aedes aegypti infestation in tropical cities: Guiding community-led interventions.

Disadvantaged communities characterised by poor sanitation conditions, overcrowding, and limited vector control are highly susceptible to Aedes aegypti proliferation and arboviral disease transmission. Effective mosquito vector control requires a detailed understanding of Ae. aegypti oviposition preferences and spatial distribution within such urban environments. This study aimed to identify key environmental and behavioural drivers of Ae. aegypti proliferation in disadvantaged communities of Salvador, Brazil, combining household surveys, entomological assessments, and remote sensing to guide

Communication- and physics-adaptive carrierless phase-retrieval reception for LEO satellite-to-ground FSO communications.

In this paper, we propose and experimentally validate a communication- and physics-adaptive phase retrieval (CP-APR) scheme for low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellite-to-ground free-space optical (FSO) links. The proposed method establishes a unified carrierless phase-retrieval framework by jointly incorporating a soft-projection relaxed averaged alternating reflections (S-RAAR) backbone, adaptive physical dispersion tuning, a constellation-constrained communication prior, and an adaptive spectral-phase constraint (ASPC), enabling robust full-field reconstruction from intensity-only measurements. A comparison of metal concentrations in vegetables from urban community gardens and groceries in response to community research.

Farmers in urban community gardens (UCGs) grow a variety of vegetables to have access to nutritious food that may be scarce, to enjoy the benefits of nature, and as political resistance to numerous forms of environmental injustice. These injustices are many and include food deserts, contamination, lack of green spaces, and loss of connection to land. To subvert these injustices, many community farmers choose to grow their own produce rather than to purchase produce from grocery stores. As part of an ongoing study on contamination in UCGs, partnering farmers asked our research team to analyze t
