Influence of Biogenic Material Content on the Biodegradability of Styrene-Butadiene Composites with Incorporated Chlorella vulgaris Biomass.

Bio-fillers are intensively studied for advanced polymer composite circular design and production. In this context, the algal biomass may be … 5, 10, and 20% into SBS copolymer composites. Biodegradation tests were conducted under industrial composting conditions (58 °C and 50% relative humidity) for 180 days. The biodegradability of materials was evaluated by measuring the CO2 produced in each vessel during the study period. Potential correlations between the amount of carbon dioxide released and …

Optimizing the environmental sustainability of alternative post-harvest scenarios for fresh vegetables: A case study in Spain.

The aim of this research is to define different scenarios that optimize the environmental sustainability of the post-harvest stage of vegetable products (cauliflower and brassicas mix). These scenarios considered different packaging materials; energy generation technologies for the processing plant (standard electricity mix vs. renewable options); organic waste management (composting, anaerobic digestion, and animal feeding); and refrigerated transportation (local, national, and international, using diesel, natural gas, and hybrid trucks and railway). The analysis has been carried out based on…

Innovative dual-step management of semi-aerobic landfill in a tropical climate.

Despite concerted efforts to innovate the solid waste management (SWM) system, land disposal continues to represent the most widely used tec … tion of a potential dual-step management of semi-aerobic landfilling in a tropical climate in which composting process was reproduced during the dry season and subsequently flushing (high rainfall rate) during the wet period. Eight bioreactors specifically designed: four operated under anaerobic conditions and four under semi-aerobic conditions; half of the …

Rhinocerebral maxillary mucormycosis: A palatal ulcer.

Mucormycosis, caused by saprophytic fungi of the order Mucorales of the class zygomycetes, is a rare opportunistic fungal infection, which has a rapidly progressive and fulminant course with fatal outcome. Mucormycosis can result in an acute, rapidly advancing and occasionally fatal disease caused by different fungi typically found in the soil in association with decaying organic matter such as leaves, compost piles, or bread molds. Mucormycosis is not contagious and does not spread from person to person. We report a case of palatal perforation by rhino-maxillary mucormycosis in an immunocompr

Mushroom worker's lung--two outbreaks.

Stewart, C. J. (1974).Thorax, 29, 252-257. Mushroom worker's lung—two outbreaks. The clinical picture, immunological findings, and working environment of six mushroom farm workers who developed the characteristic features of mushroom worker's lung while handling pasteurized compost are reported and discussed. A specific antigen has not been identified. The sporadic occurrence of the condition suggests that the antigen is present only intermittently in the working environment in sufficient concentrations to cause alveolitis. Until such time as the constitutional, immunological, and environmenta

Synergistic effect of nano-chelated iron fertilizer and vermicompost tea on the stigma yield and phytochemicals of Crocus sativus L. in an alkaline soil.

BACKGROUND: Saffron (Crocus sativus L.) is considered the most valuable spice in the world, and its cultivation requires specific soil conditions to maximize yield and quality. While saffron can grow in calcareous soils, the high pH levels typically associated with these soils can limit optimal production. Limited studies have demonstrated that applying nano-chelated iron fertilizer (NCIF) and solid vermicompost individually can enhance saffron growth and yield. However, the combined effects of NCIF and liquid vermicompost tea (VCT) in alkaline conditions remain unexplored in saffron or other

Iron-modified biochar facilitates simultaneous stabilization of perfluorooctanoic acid and heavy metals during vermicomposting of sludge.

The ubiquitous coexistence of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and heavy metals (HMs) in sludge restricts its resource utilization through vermicomposting. Biochar-based adsorbents are mixed with sludge to improve its vermicomposting effectiveness, yet their potential for PFOA and HMs stabilization remains unexplored. In this study, iron-modified biochar (Fe-BC) was used to enhance simultaneous stabilization of PFOA and HMs during vermicomposting of sludge. The sludge mixed with 0% (VC), 1% (V1), 3% (V3), and 5% (V5) of Fe-BC was separately vermicomposted by Eisenia fetida. The results showed hig…

Coupling pervaporation to AAS for inorganic and organic mercury determination. A new approach to speciation of Hg in environmental samples.

The design and development of a new approach for Hg speciation in environmental samples is described in detail. This method, consisting of the coupling of pervaporation and atomic absorption spectrometry, is based on a membrane phenomenon that combines the evaporation of volatile analytes and their diffusion through a polymeric membrane. It is proposed here as an alternative to gas chromatography for speciation of inorganic and organic Hg compounds, as the latter compounds are volatile and can be separated by applying the principles mentioned above. The interest of this method lies in its easy

Pulmonary reactions to organic dust exposures: development of an animal model.

Acute inhalation of organic dusts such as cotton, hay, silage, grain, animal confinement, or compost dust can result in illness characterized by fever, pulmonary inflammation, chest tightness, and airway obstruction. These agricultural materials are complex mixtures of plant, bacterial, and fungal products. Elucidation of the time course of disease onset, the mechanisms of disease progression, and the identity of etiologic agents is essential for effective prevention and treatment. Toward this end, animal models for acute organic dust-induced reactions have been developed and characterized. In

Effect of astaxanthin supplementation on Holstein cows subjected to IVP of embryos during the summer.

To evaluate whether astaxanthin supplementation improves dairy Holstein cows' performance in IVP programs, lactating females (n = 45) were supplemented with 0, 0.25, or 0.50 mg of astaxanthin kg-1 day-1 for 70 days during the summer before OPU. Mixed and generalized linear mixed models were used. The compost barn microclimate was hot and partially humid. Haircoat surface temperature differed by day (p = 4.38 × 10-7) but not by the astaxanthin. Rectal temperature remained within normal range and showed no astaxanthin effect; heart rate varied by day (p = 0.0030) but stayed within reference limi

Toxicological and genotoxicological assessment of water extracts of sewage sludge and other biogenic wastes: A piece of the SLURP jigsaw puzzle.

Given the considerable quantities of biogenic matrices employed in agricultural applications, there is growing concern about the potential negative effects resulting from the presence of harmful contaminants. The project "SLURP - SLUdge Recovery in Agriculture: Environment and Health Protection" planned a multi-stage approach in which the application of a wide battery of bioassays was proposed as an effective tool to measure the direct interaction of matrices with the different components of the ecosystem, from the molecular to the whole organism level. The aim of the present study, which is a

Impact of wood-derived biochar on the hydrologic performance of bioretention media: Effects on aggregation, root growth, and water retention.

Bioretention systems are one example of green stormwater infrastructure that may mitigate the hydrologic impact of stormwater runoff. To improve water retention while maintaining rapid stormwater infiltration, conventional bioretention soil media (BSM) might be augmented with biochar. Biochar may improve the BSM's structure by increasing soil aggregation, which might improve water retention and increase stormwater infiltration while also improving root growth. Pots with BSMs representing high and moderate sand content media were amended with a wood-derived biochar, planted with switchgrass, an

Mercury and methylmercury in Hg-contaminated paddy soil and their uptake in rice as regulated by DOM from different agricultural sources.

In this study, from the perspectives of structural and compositional variations of soil-dissolved organic matter (DOM), we explored the effects of agricultural DOM inputs on methylmercury (MeHg) accumulation in the soil and mercury (Hg) bioaccumulation in rice grains. Pot experiments with the addition of DOMs from maize straw (MaS), rape straw (RaS), rice straw (RiS), composted rice straw (CRiS), cow dung (CD), and composted cow dung (CCD) were then conducted. Results showed that, relative to the control, the DOM amendment from each agricultural source elevated MeHg concentrations in the soil,

Trichoderma Biofertilizer Links to Altered Soil Chemistry, Altered Microbial Communities, and Improved Grassland Biomass.

In grasslands, forage and livestock production results in soil nutrient deficits as grasslands typically receive no nutrient inputs, leading to a loss of grassland biomass. The application of mature compost has been shown to effectively increase grassland nutrient availability. However, research on fertilization regime influence and potential microbial ecological regulation mechanisms are rarely conducted in grassland soil. We conducted a two-year experiment in meadow steppe grasslands, focusing on above- and belowground consequences of organic or Trichoderma biofertilizer applications and pot

Insights from characterizing extinct human gut microbiomes.

In an effort to better understand the ancestral state of the human distal gut microbiome, we examine feces retrieved from archaeological contexts (coprolites). To accomplish this, we pyrosequenced the 16S rDNA V3 region from duplicate coprolite samples recovered from three archaeological sites, each representing a different depositional environment: Hinds Cave (~8000 years B.P.) in the southern United States, Caserones (1600 years B.P.) in northern Chile, and Rio Zape in northern Mexico (1400 years B.P.). Clustering algorithms grouped samples from the same site. Phyletic representation was mor

A process to prepare a synthetic filter material containing nutrients for biofiltration.

In this study, an optimal process to prepare a synthetic filter material (poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/peat/KNO(3) composite bead) containing nutrients was developed for biofiltration. The optimal preparing condition was that each of the peat and PVA aqueous solutions contains 6.4 g KNO(3) and the nitrogen content in the boric and phosphate aqueous solutions must retain higher than 3.94 and 1.52 g N/l, respectively. The equilibrium amount of water-soluble nitrogen dissolved out of the prepared composite bead was between 7.95 and 8.21mg N/g dry solid. The path of water-soluble nitrogen dissolving

Intramuscular therapeutic doses of enrofloxacin affect microbial community structure but not the relative abundance of fluoroquinolones resistance genes in swine manure.

Livestock manure is a major source of veterinary antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Elucidation of the residual characteristics of ARGs in livestock manure following the administration of veterinary antibiotics is critical to assess their ecotoxicological effects and environmental contamination risks. Here, we investigated the effects of enrofloxacin (ENR), a fluoroquinolone antibiotic commonly used as a therapeutic drug in animal husbandry, on the characteristics of ARGs, mobile genetic elements, and microbial community structure in swine manure following its intramuscular ad

Effects of vermicompost and lime on acidic soil properties and malt barley (Hordeum Distichum L.) productivity in Mecha district, northwest Ethiopia.

Due to continuous cultivation, high soil acidity, and low nutrient inputs, soil fertility depletion has been a major threat to northwest Ethiopia's crop productivity and food security. This study aimed to examine the effects of vermicompost and lime rates on soil properties and malt barley (Hordeum distichum L.) productivity under a furrow irrigation system on acidic soil in the Mecha district, northwest Ethiopia. The treatments were combinations of three levels of vermicompost (0, 2.66-, and 5.31-tons ha-1) and three levels of lime (0-, 2.16-, and 3.24-tons ha-1) arranged in a randomized comp

Performance monitoring of roadside green infrastructure: The different perspectives of alternate water quality metrics.

Green infrastructure (GI) is increasingly used for managing developed watershed stormwater and GI designs are quickly developing. Performance monitoring data to guide GI design are challenging to collect and sparse, especially for multiple design types within the same study area. Evaluating GI performance with monitoring data can be done in multiple ways, with different managers using different metrics for evaluation. In this study, the year-round field performance of four roadside GI practices (bioretention, grass channel [GC], compost-amended grass channel [CAGC], and bioswale) in Northern V
