Clinical profile of compulsive sexual behaviour and paraphilia in Parkinson's disease.

This case control study compares the clinical and demographic profile of Parkinson's disease (PD) participants with compulsive sexual behaviour (CSB) to those with other impulse control disorders (ICDs) and those with no behavioural disorder. We found a higher dopaminergic load (p < 0.05) and higher levels of anxiety (p < 0.01) in the CSB group compared to the PD control group. On the NEO-FFI, a measure of personality style, the CSB group was significantly 'more open to new experiences' (p < 0.05) and significantly 'less agreeable' (p < 0.01) compared with the other two groups. Results suggest

Psychiatric symptoms are present in most of the patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus.

Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is characterized by gait disturbance, dementia and/or urinary incontinence associated with dilation of ventricular system with normal opening cerebrospinal fluid pressure. Wide scientifical evidence confirms association between NPH and psychiatric symptoms. We selected 35 patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus from January 2010 to January 2012 in a Brazilian tertiary hospital and performed a formal psychiatric evaluation to identify psychiatric disorders. Psychiatric disorders were present in 71% of these patients, especially anxiety, depress

Self-Stigma and Treatment Effectiveness in Patients with SSRI Non-Responsive Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

PURPOSE: Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a debilitating mental disorder that often takes a chronic course. One of the factors influencing the treatment effectiveness in anxiety and depressive disorders is the self-stigma. This study focused on the relationship between the self-stigma, symptomatology, and therapeutic outcomes in patients with OCD. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Ninety-four inpatients with OCD, who did not sufficiently respond to at least one selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor trial, participated in the study. They attended a six-week therapeutic program consisting of exposur

Hoarding symptoms in patients on a geriatric psychiatry inpatient unit.

BACKGROUND: While collecting may be a normal behaviour, hoarding is a symptom of various psychiatric disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD). Although anecdotal reports suggest that hoarding is not uncommon in geriatric psychiatry populations, its psychopathological correlates in such samples have not been well characterised. METHODS: The presence of clinically significant hoarding symptoms was screened for in 100 consecutive patients in a geriatric psychiatry inpatient unit. Both patient and collateral histories were obtai…

[Comorbid disorders associated with tics].

INTRODUCTION: Tics are the most frequent abnormal movements in children. This is one reason for their importance. Another reason is their relationship to fascinating disturbances of human behaviour such as compulsion and obsessions. Several 'behavioural disorders', mainly attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), are more frequent in patients with tics than in the general population. These associated disorders (named 'comorbid') are probably of more consequence than the tics. Relationship between tics and comorbid disorders is not well known. This

Clinical implications of insight assessment in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Poor insight has been reported in 15% to 36% of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), but little is known about its clinical correlations. This study examines insight among patients with OCD using a standardized instrument, the Brown Assessment of Beliefs Scale, and analyzes its relationship with clinical factors. Insight was assessed in 132 patients with OCD, before and after pharmacologic treatment, using the Brown Assessment of Beliefs Scale. Differences between patients with good and poor insight on sociodemographic variables, OCD severity, comorbidity, and treatment response

Phemenological aspects of personality disorders in adult psychiatric patients.

BACKGROUND: Many empirical studies give evidence of co-occurrence of mental and personality disorders (PDs). On the other hand theoretical models explain the relationship between personality and mental disorders from different perspectives. This research studied the phemenological aspects of PDs in adult psychiatric patients with different mental disorders according to cognitive and psychoanalytic criteria for personality pathology. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In order to study personality pathology in different diagnostic groups we constructed a self-report Questionnaire of Personality Disorders (

Obsessive-compulsive disorder in children and adolescents: epidemiology, diagnosis and management.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) can be found in about 4% of the general population and is characterized by various compulsions and obsessions that interfere with the person's quality of life from a mild to severe degree. The following discussion reflects on current concepts in this condition, including its epidemiology and etiologic underpinnings (behavioral, neurological, immunological, gastroenterological, as well as genetic). The interplay of PANS and PANDAS are included in this review. In addition, the core concepts of OCD diagnosis, differential diagnosis, and co-morbidities are consi

Driver risk-level identification incorporating personality traits, demographic characteristics, and driving behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: Human factors have a profound influence on the prevalence of vehicle crashes, particularly among high-risk drivers. This study aims to develop a driver risk-level identification method to effectively evaluate the safety of drivers and design training programs. METHODS: The personality traits of 50 drivers were quantitatively evaluated using the Symptom Checklist-90 scale, with parallel documentation of demographic information. A tri-level risk categorization (low, medium, and high) was established for drivers based on risky driving behaviors investigated via field tests. Correlatio

Personality, sexual adjustment, and brain lesions in patients with conversion symptoms.

To clarify the interrelationships of conversion symptoms, hysterical personality, sexual adjustment, and cerebral organic disorders the authors studied 89 patients with classic motor conversion symptoms (group L) and compared a subgroup of 24 of these patients (group H) with 24 matched control patients (group C). They found hysterical personality in 19% of group L, 21% of group H, and none of group C and passive-immature-dependent personality in 19% of group L, 21% of group H, and none of group C. Forty-eight percent of group L, 50% of group H, and 58% of group C had some cerebral disorder. Pa

Measuring IPDE-SQ personality disorder prevalence in pre-sentence and early-stage prison populations, with sub-type estimates.

Understanding the prevalence and type of personality disorder within prison systems allows for the effective targeting of resources to implement strategies to alleviate symptoms, manage behaviour and attempt to reduce re-offending. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of personality disorder (PD) traits within a local urban high-turnover adult male prison with a remand/recently sentenced population in London, UK. The International Personality Disorder Examination - Screening Questionnaire (IPDE-SQ) self-administered questionnaire (ICD-10 version) was completed by 283 prisoners (42% com

Topiramate for the treatment of kleptomania: a case series and review of the literature.

Kleptomania--the inability to resist the impulse to steal objects, not for personal use or monetary gain--is currently classified in psychiatric nomenclature as an impulse control disorder. There is no standard pharmacologic therapy for this disorder. If kleptomania was considered a form of obsessive-compulsive disorder, treatments used for this spectrum, including serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI), other antidepressants, opioid receptor antagonist medications, and mood stabilizers, could be logically tested. Topiramate is currently used for the treatment of patients with affective and comp

Validation of the German Relationship-Obsessive Compulsive Inventory: Testing the Factorial Structure, Measurement Invariance, and External Validity.

OBJECTIVES: Relationship obsessive compulsive disorder (ROCD) describes intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviors (e.g., reassurance seeking, monitoring feelings) regarding one's romantic relationship. The Relationship Obsessive Compulsive Inventory (ROCI) is the standard instrument to assess ROCD expressions. In our study, we tested the reliability and validity of the German ROCI. METHODS: We analyzed data from two independent nonclinical samples comprising 409 and 248 partnered individuals to expand the knowledge of the psychometric properties, factorial structure, and external validity o
