Ocular allergy includes several clinically different conditions that can be considered as hypersensitivity disorders of the ocular surface. The classification of these conditions is complex, and their epidemiology has not been adequately studied because of the lack of unequivocal nomenclature. Ocular allergy symptoms are often, but not always, associated with other allergic manifestations, mostly rhinitis. However, specific ocular allergic diseases need to be recognized and managed by a team that includes both an ophthalmologist and an allergist. The diagnosis of ocular allergy is usually base

The eye is probably the most common site for the development of allergic inflammatory disorders, because it has no mechanical barrier to prevent the impact of allergens such as pollen on its surface. Physicians in various specialties and subspecialties who provide some form of primary care frequently encounter various forms of inflammation of the anterior surface of the eye that present as "red eye." However, the eye is rarely the only target for an immediate allergic-type response. Typically, many patients have other combinations of allergic disorders, such as rhinoconjunctivitis, rhinosinusi

INTRODUCTION: The etiology of Kawasaki disease (KD), an inflammatory and cardiovascular disorder, remains largely unexplained after more than 50 years of intensive research. In recent years, the association between KD and atopic diseases had been explored by some observational studies. We systematically reviewed and summarized the literature on the relationship between KD and atopic diseases.
METHODS: MEDLINE and EMBASE were searched to identify observational studies on the association between KD and atopic diseases from inception to May 2021. Odds ratio (OR) was pooled using random-effects m

PURPOSE: We previously reported allergic conjunctivitis was associated with a local pattern of cytokines and identified respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in the conjunctival epithelium, in patients with allergic conjunctivitis. We hypothesized that RSV infected the normal conjunctival epithelium and produced interleukin-4 (IL-4), causing an allergic reaction. To determine this event, we studied production of IL-4 by human conjunctival epithelial cells, after infection with RSV.
METHODS: Conjunctival samples were collected with a special brush and were challenged with 5 x 10(6) pfu/ml of live

Kawaguchi and Hatogaya City are located on the northern edge of Tokyo. We analysed between air pollution and prevalence rate of allergic diseases among elementary school children in this area. A prevalence rate of allergic diseases in 1996 May and June was as follows; bronchial asthma 13.5%, atopic dermatitis 24.5%, allergic rhinitis and/or conjunctivitis 22.8%, urticaria 12.4%, food allergy 7.8% and drug allergy 2.2%, respectively. Air pollution of this area was analysed to check the levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and suspended particulate matters (SPM). NO2 pollution

Ambient air pollution is a well-recognized risk for various diseases including asthma and heart diseases. However, it remains unclear whether air pollution may also be a risk of ocular allergic diseases. Using a web-based, nation-wide, cross-sectional study design, we examined whether the level of ambient air pollution is significantly associated with the prevalence of ocular allergic diseases. A web-based questionnaire was posted to invite the participants who are members of the Japan Ophthalmologist Association and their family members. The answers from 3004 respondents were used to determin

Ocular IgE-associated allergy ranges from mild disease (seasonal and perennial allergic conjunctivitis) to more chronic/severe and vision-threatening forms (atopic and vernal keratoconjunctivitis). Whereas mild forms of disease have been studied extensively, less is known about the more chronic forms. Our lab has helped to address this knowledge gap by developing and characterizing an allergen-induced, chronic/severe, IgE-associated model of ocular allergy referred to as the severe allergic eye disease (AED) model. It is distinct from previously described models that mimic the more mild forms,

OBJECTIVE: Linkage between allergy and increased immune response activation in Tourette syndrome (TS) has been reported. We performed a matched case-control study to evaluate correlation between allergic diseases and TS.
METHODS: Data in this case-control study were from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. The sample comprised 845 2- to 18-year-old patients with newly diagnosed TS in 2003–2007 and 3378 controls frequency matched with cases on age, sex, and urbanization level. Unconditional logistic regression estimated odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) o

BACKGROUND: Conjunctivitis remains one of the most common ocular conditions affecting paediatric and adult populations globally. South and Southeast Asia have experienced unprecedented seasonal surges in conjunctivitis cases, with tens of thousands of cases occurring over short periods, particularly during monsoon and pre-monsoon seasons.
CLASSIFICATION & PATHOPHYSIOLOGY: Conjunctivitis is classified into infectious causes (viral, bacterial, and chlamydial) and non-infectious causes (allergic, toxic, cicatricial, and immune-mediated). Viral conjunctivitis accounts for the majority of cases. A

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To elaborate and review the immunologic spectrum of the five basic types of ocular allergy.
RECENT FINDINGS: Perennial allergic conjunctivitis (PAC) appears to be an extension of seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (SAC) based on the similarity of clinical symptoms and the immune mechanism involved. T helper type 2 (TH2)-type cytokines, increased ratio of TH1/TH2 cytokines and increased statement of adhesion molecules all appear to play an integral role in the inflammatory process of SAC and PAC. Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC), which is a pediatric disease, differs from SAC
