Anaerobic bacteria commonly cause infection in children. Anaerobes are the most predominant components of the normal human skin and mucous membrane bacterial flora, and are therefore a common cause of bacterial infections of endogenous origin. Because of their fastidious nature, they are difficult to isolate from infectious sites and are often overlooked. Anaerobic infections can occur in all body sites, including the central nervous system, oral cavity, head and neck, chest, abdomen, pelvis, skin, and soft tissues. Anaerobic bacteria colonize the newborn after delivery and have been recovered

Tests for the presence of pathogen DNA or antibodies are routinely used to survey for current or past infections. In diseases that emerge following a host jump estimates of infection rate might be under- or overestimated. We here examine whether observed rates of infection are biased for a non-focal host species in a model system. The bacterium Mycoplasma gallisepticum is a widespread pathogen in house finches (Haemorhous mexicanus), a fringillid finch, but an unknown proportion of individuals of other songbird species are also infected. Our goal is to determine the extent to which detection o

BACKGROUND: In early 2024, a surge in acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC), also referred as "red eye" disease, was observed in coastal Kenya, prompting the Ministry of Health to issue an outbreak alert. Herein, we investigated the etiology of this outbreak.
METHODS: Ocular swabs were obtained from 13 individuals presenting with AHC at a Mombasa clinic in early February 2024. Ten of these were analyzed using bacterial cultures, and all 13 using a pan-adenovirus quantitative PCR (qPCR) and metagenomic sequencing. Potential viral etiology was confirmed by a specific qPCR, amplicon sequencing

Ocular bacterial infections represent a serious problem that affecting people of all age and genders. These infections can lead to visual impairment and blindness if not properly treated. The current study evaluates the antimicrobial resistance profiles and the resistance trend of both Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS), the main pathogens involved in eye infections. A total of 322 isolates of S. aureus and CoNS, were collected from patients with bacterial conjunctivitis and keratitis at the "Luigi Vanvitelli" University Hospital of Campania in Naples

In this double-masked study, we randomly assigned 488 patients with clinical signs of acute bacterial conjunctivitis or blepharitis, or both, to treatment with either norfloxacin ophthalmic solution 0.3% (245) or gentamicin ophthalmic solution 0.3% (243) for one week. Of the patients with positive cultures, 71% (85 of 120) of the norfloxacin-treated patients and 65% (86 of 133) of the gentamicin-treated patients were clinically cured. An additional 25% (30 of 120) of norfloxacin-treated patients and 32% (43 of 133) of gentamicin-treated patients were clinically improved. On the basis of posttr

PURPOSE: We sought to determine whether big data from social media might reveal seasonal trends of conjunctivitis, most forms of which are nonreportable.
METHODS: Social media posts (from Twitter, and from online forums and blogs) were classified by age and by conjunctivitis type (allergic or infectious) using Boolean and machine learning methods. Based on spline smoothing, we estimated the circular mean occurrence time (a measure of central tendency for occurrence) and the circular variance (a measure of uniformity of occurrence throughout the year, providing an index of seasonality). BACKGROUND: Pathological origin of primary acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction (PANDO) is considered as inflammation of unknown causes; however, specific predisposing factors have not been fully addressed to date.
METHODS: In an institutional setting, background factors of 45 patients with PANDO were compared to those in 67 control subjects. The control subjects were persons with senile cataract, representing the non-pathological general population. The evaluated background factors were inflammatory medical histories (infectious conjunctivitis and allergic conjunctivitis and/or rhinitis),

Chlamydia trachomatis is a Gram-negative bacterium that causes urogenital tract infections, and ocular infections including trachoma, neonatal conjunctivitis and adult chlamydial inclusion conjunctivitis. A positive C. trachomatis diagnosis in children often raises suspicions of sexual abuse. While outer membrane protein A (ompA) genotypes A-C are non-invasive and are associated with trachoma; ompA genotypes D-K are often associated with sexually transmitted urogenital infections or sexually acquired chlamydial conjunctivitis. A 10-year-old female presented with a 7-month history of unilateral

Node-first Kawasaki disease (NFKD) is an atypical variant of Kawasaki disease (KD), presenting with fever and cervical lymphadenopathy before other classical features appear. This presentation often mimics bacterial cervical lymphadenitis (BCL), leading to misdiagnosis and treatment delays. We report a toddler initially treated for presumed BCL after presenting with a febrile convulsion and isolated lymphadenopathy. Failure to respond to antibiotics and the later appearance of rash, conjunctivitis and a small coronary artery aneurysm on echocardiography led to the diagnosis of incomplete NFKD.

Atopic dermatitis is associated with an increased risk of asthma (10 to 30% according to age), allergic rhinitis and conjunctivitis and food allergy. Other comorbidiies are globally lest frequent than in psoriasis. There is no increased risk of solid cancer. Smoking is a major confounding factor that has to be taken into account. Obesity and metabolic syndrome are more frequent and there is a moderately increased cardiovascular risk in severe forms of atopic dermatitis. There is a clear-cut increased risk of vitiligo and alopecia areata and a lower risk of other auto-immune diseases, including

Ascites, spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP), and hepatorenal syndrome-acute kidney injury (HRS-AKI) are frequent and clinically significant complications in patients with cirrhosis, each conferring a substantial increase in mortality risk. Their pathogenesis is fundamentally driven by the development of splanchnic and systemic vasodilation secondary to portal hypertension, compounded by intestinal bacterial translocation. The diagnosis of ascites and SBP should be established without delay, employing a combination of laboratory testing and imaging modalities. In contrast, the diagnosis of

Septic arthritis is a severe and rapidly destructive joint infection, primarily caused by Staphylococcus aureus. The interplay between bacterial virulence factors and host immune responses determines disease progression and clinical outcomes. This review discusses the key bacterial factors that contribute to septic arthritis, including S. aureus cell wall components, surface proteins, and secreted toxins. In parallel, host-related factors, such as aging, immune responses, and genetic predispositions, are examined in conjunction with the impact of S. aureus infection on bone integrity and osteo

This report presents two cases of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC)-associated dacryocystitis. Both patients presented with preseptal edema. Orbital computed tomography (CT) scans were performed out of concern for orbital cellulitis and revealed soft tissue edema involving the preseptal aspect of the eyelids and also the lacrimal sac. Both patients were initially diagnosed with bacterial preseptal cellulitis with dacryocystitis and admitted for treatment with intravenous antibiotics. After no improvement on antibiotics, both patients were noted to have exam findings consistent with viral con

This is a review of epidemiological, microbiological and ophthalmological publications on the importance of multidrug-resistant bacterial strains in medical, particularly ophthalmological, care. Current state of pharmaceutical market and wide variety of generics confuses doctor's (including ophthalmologist's) sense of decision-making on the optimum antibiotic for the treatment of purulent inflammation. Indiscriminate use of antibiotics contributes to multiple drug resistance in bacteria. The world returns to the pre-antibiotic era, in which there was no treatment for severe infectious and infl

We report here our findings in two Japanese siblings who experienced recurrent bacterial and viral infections since early infancy. Recent symptoms included diarrhoea, conjunctivitis, rashes, headache, sore throat, joint pain, vomiting and vertigo, all similar to those seen in toxic shock syndrome, except for shock. These symptoms improved following gammaglobulin treatment. Staphylococcus aureus with coagulase type IV was continuously isolated from nasal smears producing toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 (TSST-1). Serum antibodies did not or only poorly responded to TSST-1, diphtheria toxoid, varice
