Comparison of the sociodemographic, clinical and offense-related data of delusional disorder patients with and without a criminal history.

This study investigates the relationship of delusional disorder and its subtypes to criminal and violent behavior by comparing the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of patients with and without a criminal history and identifying predictors of crime. The records of 346 patients with a delusional disorder diagnosis were retrospectively evaluated using a sociodemographic data form, a crime violence rating scale and the Overt Aggression Scale (OAS). The results show that homicide and attempted homicide were committed more frequently by patients with jealous delusions, whereas verbal as…

Association between personality disorder and violent behavior pattern.

Personality disorders are associated with criminality and antisocial and borderline personalities as strong predictors of violence. Nevertheless antisocial patients show more instrumental violence, while borderline patients more emotional violence. We surveilled medical records of a personality disorder facility, searching data of aggression and crimes against property among 11 patients with antisocial personality disorder and 19 borderline personality disorder. We found that there are differences regarding engagement in violence and lawbreaking according to the personality disorder: antisocia…

Criminal victimization, posttraumatic stress disorder, and comorbid psychopathology among a community sample of women.

This paper provides information on the relation between victimization status, crime factors, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and several other psychological disorders among a community sample of women. Results indicated that victims of crime were more likely than nonvictims to suffer from PTSD, major depressive episode, agoraphobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, social phobia, and simple phobia. Furthermore, life threat was associated with increased risk of major depression, agoraphobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and social phobia. Completed rape was strongly related to almost ever…

An exploration of the violent victim experiences of female offenders.

Female offenders are often portrayed as victims of violence, yet few studies have systematically examined such victimization. Violent experiences may both contribute to, and result from, crime--early family abuse may help propel a young woman into crime, and a criminal lifestyle may increase her risk of assault by strangers and intimate partners. Using data from 83 inmates, this study examined violent childhood and adult experiences, and explored possible linkages between victimization and offending. Although many women reported violent experiences, most striking was the high rate of assault b…

Executive Dysfunction Predicts Delinquency But Not Characteristics of Sexual Aggression Among Adolescent Sexual Offenders.

Our aim in this study was to evaluate executive function and its relationship to delinquency and sexual crime in adolescents incarcerated for sexual crimes. Based on self-report data, 196 male adolescent sexual offenders from a Midwest state reported high rates of executive dysfunction. Although such deficits did not relate to the number of victims of sexual abuse, severity, or degree of force used in commission of the sexual crimes, poor executive function was significantly predictive of both general delinquency and felony theft. In both measures of delinquent conduct, behavioral regulation d…

Sex offending among adolescents and young men with history of psychiatric inpatient care in adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Some mental disorders have been associated with increased likelihood of sexual offending in adolescents (and adults), but releva … used for the analysis of multivariate associations. RESULTS: A subsequent criminal record for sex crime in the 10-year follow up was rare among former child and adolescent psychiatric (CAP) inpatient males (1.5%). Having a subsequent criminal record for non-sex-related violent crime was more common (25%). Time to either sex crimes or non-sex-related v …

Factors which predict violence victimization in Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: Violence is a major public health issue, globally and on the African continent. This paper looks at Uganda and begins the proc … s that predict physical violence in Uganda. In order, these included being the victim of a property crime, age, gender, fear of crime in the home, poverty, and residential crowding. The surprising findings relate to what may be called target hardening, especially for those likely to be re-victimized. Respondents did tend to be re-victimized, with about …

Motivations, substance use and other correlates amongst property and violent offenders who regularly inject drugs.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the prevalence, correlates and motivations for the commission of property and violent crime amongst a sample of people who inject drugs (PWID). METHOD: Data were obtained from the 2013 Illicit Drug Reporting System (IDRS), which includes a cross-sectional sample of 887 PWID. RESULTS: Eighteen percent of PWID had committed a property offence and 3% had committed a violent offence in the month preceding interview. Opioid dependence (AOR 2.57, 95% CI 1.29-5.10) and age (AOR 0.96, 95% CI 0.93-0.99) were found to be the strongest correlates of property crime. The majority of…

Exposure to trauma-relevant pictures is associated with tachycardia in victims who had experienced an intense peritraumatic defensive response: the tonic immobility.

Tonic immobility is an involuntary, last-ditch defensive reaction characterized by physical inactivity in a context of inescapable threat th … rauma. Using a questionnaire of life-threating events, we selected students who experienced violent crime as their most intense trauma and students who had never experienced a violent crime trauma, but experienced other traumatic events. All participants completed a questionnaire that estimated the intensity of tonic immobility during their most intense …

Interim methadone treatment: impact on arrests.

AIMS: This study examines the frequency and severity of arrest charges among heroin addicts randomly assigned to either interim methadone (IM) maintenance or to remain on a waiting list for methadone treatment. It was hypothesized that IM participants would have a: (1) lower number of arrests at 6 and 12 months and (2) lower mean crime severity scores at 6 and 12 months post-baseline. METHODS: Available official arrest data were obtained for all 319 study participants for a period of 2 years before and after study enrollment. Crime severity ratings of charges were made using an established me…

Judgment, 29 December 1987.

The Court of Appeal of Santiago, Chile, held that, under Articles 111 and 481(4) of the Chilean Code of Penal Procedure, the confession of an accused will prove that person's participation in the crime only if it is corroborated by other means of proof and the confession is in conformity with the circumstances surrounding the crime. It acquitted the defendant, who had confessed to the crime of abortion, noting that the medical record stated that the abortion was spontaneous and that the physician could not affirm that there had been abortive manipulations.

High autonomic arousal and electrodermal orienting at age 15 years as protective factors against criminal behavior at age 29 years.

OBJECTIVE: Nothing is known about biological factors that protect a predisposed individual from becoming criminal. This 14-year prospective study tested the hypothesis that antisocial adolescents who desist from crime by age 29 have greater physiological arousal and orienting than antisocial adolescents who become adult criminals. METHOD: Physiological arousal and orienting were measured in 101 unselected 15-year-old male schoolchildren. Of these, 17 antisocial adolescents who desisted from adult crime (desistors) were matched on adolescent antisocial behavior and demographic variables with 1…

The Impact of Residing in a Gang Territory on Adverse Birth Outcomes: Evidence from Los Angeles.

Gang violence remains an ongoing crisis in many communities in the United States. This paper assesses the potential association of gang-occupied neighborhoods with birth outcomes. Adverse birth outcomes serve as a "barometer" of population health, denoting both poor conditions for human development and portending future public health concerns. We draw upon (1) Los Angeles County Vital Statistics Birth Records (2008-2012), (2) GIS information on gang territory boundaries, (3) LA city geo-coded crime data, and (4) the 2010 U.S. Census and 2006-2010 American Community Survey. We find an associati…

Short and disrupted sleep is related to perceptions of neighborhood in pregnant African American women of low socioeconomic status.

OBJECTIVES: Poor sleep is linked to increased pregnancy complications. African Americans disproportionately reside in disadvantaged neighborhoods with higher crime and traffic, and are more likely to experience poor sleep compared to Caucasians. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between neighborhood environment perceptions and sleep in African American pregnant women of low socioeconomic status (SES). STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional. METHODS: Participants (N = 262) were African American women aged 18-45 with a BMI of 25.0-45.0 kg/m2 and low SES. Perceptions of neighborhood environme…

Chronic Offending and Its Relation to Homicide in a Large, Prospective Brazilian Birth Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Many studies have found that a small group of chronic offenders is responsible for the majority of crimes and tend to be particularly violent. However, there is a major lack of evidence on chronic offending in low- and middle-income countries; understanding these patterns is especially important in settings with very high levels of serious violence, such as Brazil. AIMS: To identify the extent that crime is concentrated in chronic offenders and linked to violence and homicide in a Brazilian cohort. METHODS: The 1982 Pelotas Birth Cohort includes 5623 participants followed from bi…

Victimization and engagement with the legal system among individuals at clinical high risk (CHR) for psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Despite findings of more victimization and legal issues in individuals with psychotic illness, little is known about this history among youth at clinical high-risk for psychosis (CHR). Further, it is unclear whether certain demographic, clinical, functional, or diagnostic patterns exist among CHR youth who report victimization and/or crime/legal engagement. METHODS: Participants (N = 684 CHR, N = 95 healthy controls) were part of the North American Prodromal Longitudinal Study-3 (NAPLS-3).
