The comparative clinical and demographic features of neuromyelitis optica (NMO) are not well known. In this review we analyzed peer-reviewed publications for incidence and prevalence, clinical phenotypes, and demographic features of NMO. Population-based studies from Europe, South East and Southern Asia, the Caribbean, and Cuba suggest that the incidence and prevalence of NMO ranges from 0.05-0.4 and 0.52-4.4 per 100,000, respectively. From the end of 1991 to June, 1993, an epidemic neuropathy affecting 50,963 persons occurred in Cuba. Two clinical forms of the disease were observed: the optic form (with or without peripheral manifestations, 52% of the cases) and the peripheral form (48%). Morphological variation was studied in the adult cladorchiid trematodes Chiorchis spp. (Trematoda: Digenea), that parasitize the intestinal tract and caecum of the American manatee (Trichechus manatus). During the Ebola outbreak that hit Guinea in 2014, most of the people employed at the Wonkifong Ebola treatment unit were from Africa or Cuba. Despite the recruitment of black personnel, the unit exposes how the humanitarian infrastructure exploited Guinean workers as if their lives were less vulnerable than those of the foreign personnel.
