The authors report a case of choledocal cyst extended to left and right hepatic ducts. An heterogeneous intracystic fluid, partial calcification of cystic wall, a slight positivity of echinoccosis serology in a patient from a highly endemic country erroneously led to diagnosis of hydatid cyst invading the left hepatic duct. The diagnosis of choledocal cyst was done on the resection specimen after left hepatectomy. A small patch of cyst wall with terminations of both right sectorial hepatic ducts was used for cysto-jejunal Roux-en-Y loop anastomosis. Peculiarities of this type of choledocal cys

PURPOSE: To gain a better understanding of neurenteric (NE) cysts via correlation of imaging findings and surgical and pathologic data.
METHODS: The medical records, imaging studies, surgical information, and pathologic material were retrospectively reviewed in nine patients with NE cysts, including seven proved and two very probable cases.
RESULTS: NE cysts occurred in the cerebellopontine angle in one case and extended from the cerebellopontine angle to the C2 level in a second. In the latter patient and the remaining seven with intraspinal lesions, the NE cyst was always located anterior

A radicular cyst is characterized as an odontogenic cyst of inflammatory origin that develops from Malassez epithelial rests in the periodontal ligament as the consequence of dental pulp inflammation. The cyst commenced in the carious tooth and spread to the periodontal and periapical regions. The majority of these lesions appear as precise radiolucencies and encompass their entire apex. The cystic lesion, which is also called a root-end cyst or periapical cyst, is sometimes referred to as a true cyst because it is lined by fluid epithelium. There are several treatment options to address radic

AIMS: Hepatic cysts have a prevalence of 2.5-7% and most of them are asymptomatic. However, large cysts may cause complaints; in such cases an appropriate treatment is necessary (open surgery, laparoscopic deroofing, removal of cystic fluid and injection of a sclerosing agent. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of a single session technique with polidocanol in the therapy of symptomatic non parasitic hepatic cysts. MATERIAL AND METHODS. The study included 13 patients with symptomatic liver cysts (range 4-10 cm). All patients underwent percutaneous aspiration of the liv

Pulmonary cysts are air- or fluid-filled parenchymal spaces surrounded by an epithelial or fibrous wall; diagnosing an infected cyst can be challenging. Herein, we report a case of a 44-year-old woman who presented with fever and a productive cough. Chest computed tomography revealed a giant cystic lesion in the left upper lobe with an air-fluid level, suggesting superimposed infection. Despite intravenous antibiotics, the lesion rapidly progressed, leading to pulmonary abscess formation. A lobectomy was performed due to poor response to medical therapy and risk of sepsis. Pathology confirmed

INTRODUCTION: An aneurysmal bone cyst is a benign but often rapidly expanding osteolytic multi-cystic osseous lesion that occurs as a primary, secondary, intra-osseous, extra-osseous, solid or conventional lesion. It frequently coexists with other benign and malignant bone tumors. Although it is considered to be reactive in nature, there is evidence that some aneurysmal bone cysts are true neoplasms. The solid variant of aneurysmal bone cyst is a rare subtype of aneurysmal bone cyst with a preponderance of solid to cystic elements. Such a case affecting the heel, an unusual site, is reported.

Renal cyst development and expansion in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) involves both fluid secretion and abnormal proliferation of cyst-lining epithelial cells. The chloride channel of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) participates in secretion of cyst fluid, and the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway may drive proliferation of cyst epithelial cells. CFTR and mTOR are both negatively regulated by AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). Metformin, a drug in wide clinical use, is a pharmacological activator of AMPK. We find that metformin…

Echinococcosis is one of the zoonotic illnesses. Echinococcus granulosus larvae are the causative agents. Renal hydatid cysts are extremely rare and are typically unilateral. If they evolve slowly, they may not show any symptoms for years. Only 2%-3% of cases of hydatidosis have isolated renal hydatid cysts, making them rare. In this case, the radiological and clinical results suggested only a simple renal cyst, and cytopathology clinched the final diagnosis. A 20 mL turbid cyst fluid sample was sent for cytological analysis. Many scolices with radially arranged hooklets, scattered hooklets, m…

BACKGROUND: Renal cysts are common in old patients, and usually remain untreated. Giant renal cyst measuring more than 15 cm in diameter and containing more than 1500 mls of serous fluid are rarely seen. We report a case of a 75-year-old man with a giant right renal cyst.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 75-year-old man presented with a five years history of suprapubic pain, abdominal distension. He had no urological symptoms. Physical examination revealed a distended abdomen with shifting dullness. Routine hematology, biochemistry, and serum tumor markers were within normal limits. Erroneously diagnosed

OBJECTIVE: Although anterior mediastinal cysts are generally benign diseases, the preoperative diagnosis of these lesions is not necessarily accurate. This study aimed to investigate the factors affecting the preoperative diagnosis of anterior mediastinal cysts.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 35 patients with pathologically diagnosed anterior mediastinal cysts (20 thymic cysts, 7 bronchogenic cysts, 5 pericardial cysts, and 3 others) that were resected at our hospital and evaluated their preoperative diagnosis, cyst size, and fluid content.
RESULTS: Eighteen, 15, 1, and 1

OBJECTIVE: To describe the sonographic appearances of cysticercosis.
METHODS: Sonography was performed with both convex and linear array transducers in 4 patients with different symptoms.
RESULTS: In 2 patients, an intramuscular fluid collection was seen with a cysticercus cyst in it. In 1 patient, an irregular cyst with a small fluid collection on 1 side was seen. In the last patient, multiple elliptical millet seed-shaped calcifications were seen in the liver, mesentery, and retroperitoneal fat.
CONCLUSIONS: Four different sonographic appearances of soft tissue cysticercosis are described

A 26 year-old man presented a hepatic cyst complicated by intracystic bleeding. Clinical and biological features (chronic pancreatitis), ultrasound and computed tomography findings apparent hepatic and splenic location), macroscopic aspects (inflammatory changes, brown-colored fluid) as well as microscopic characteristics (thickened cyst-wall, absence of epithelium) of both cysts suggested the diagnosis of pancreatic pseudocysts. The diagnosis of hepatic cyst was carried out on histological examination showing Meyenburg and neuro-fibrillar complexes. Occurrence of complications (bleeding, size

Spread of spinal cord glioblastoma multiforme to the intracranial compartment is uncommon. This report documents a case of metastatic spread of glioblastoma multiforme from the spinal cord to an intracranial arachnoid cyst. Seeding of the cyst cavity could have occurred by direct permeation of the cyst wall by the neoplastic glial cells spreading via the cerebrospinal fluid or by direct access of the cells through a defect in the arachnoid cyst wall and their subsequent entrapment by a ball valve type mechanism, leading to multiple implants.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most frequent inherited kidney disease. Transepithelial fluid secretion is one of the key factors of cystogenesis in ADPKD. Multiple studies have suggested that fluid secretion across ADPKD cyst-lining cells is driven by the secretion of chloride, essentially mediated by the CFTR channel and stimulated by increased intracellular levels of 3',5'-cyclic adenosine monophosphate. This review focuses on the pathophysiology of fluid secretion in ADPKD based on the pioneering studies of Jared Grantham and colleagues, and on the follow-up inv

Background: Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is an acquired infection of central nervous system associated with epileptic seizures. The parasite 'Taenia solium' causes this disease and has a complex life cycle and molts into various stages that influence the host-parasite interaction. The disease has a long asymptomatic phase with viable cyst and degeneration of cyst and leaking cyst fluid has been associated with symptomatic phase. The parasite proteome holds the answers and clues to this complex clinical presentation and hence unraveling of proteome of parasite antigens is needed for better understa…

BACKGROUND: Arachnoid cysts are congenital lesions that contain fluid identical to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). They usually do not communicate with CSF spaces. The vast majority of arachnoid cysts are congenital asymptomatic lesions that are discovered incidentally. Those lesions that do become symptomatic typically present in childhood with signs and symptoms of intracranial hypertension, seizures, and focal neurologic deficits specific to cyst location.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A rare case of a parasellar arachnoid cyst presenting with oculomotor palsy is presented. The patient is a 45-year-old mal
