A simple, defined synthetic medium has been developed for the growth of a toxic-shock-syndrome-associated Staphylococcus aureus strain (FRI 1187) in continuous culture, which gives a high growth yield and assayable amounts of acid phosphatase, haemolytic activity, hyaluronate lyase and toxic-shock-syndrome toxin-1. It consists of multiple ions, ammonium sulphate, glucose, cystine, aspartate, glutamate, arginine, glycine, proline, nicotinic acid and thiamine.

Rats were fed diets supplemented with 1% L-methionine with and without 2.5% various amino acids for 7 d to determine what amino acids other than glycine, serine, and cystine can suppress methionine-induced hyperhomocysteinemia. L-Glutamic acid, L-histidine, and L-arginine significantly suppressed methionine-induced enhancement of plasma homocysteine concentrations, but the mechanisms underlying the effect of these amino acids are thought not to be identical.

Diabetes insipidus is an uncommon condition with various aetiologies. Recent research has uncovered new mechanisms underlying the syndrome. Careful attention to management is essential in pregnant women to avoid serious complications. Diabetes insipidus in pregnancy may be due to relative reduction in secretion of AVP from the posterior pituitary (cranial DI), increase in breakdown of AVP by placental cystine aminopeptidase with vasopressinase activity, or resistance of the rental tubules to AVP (nephrogenic DI).

In a series of 17 670 deliveries, uterine malformations were seen in 47 cases (0,20%). This level was high bearing in mind the resultant obstetric complications: breech presentation in 51,4% of cases (as against 3,01% for all patients) and a 63,7% caesarian section rate. Maternal morbidity and perinatal mortality could be reduced if obstetricians took care to seek such malformations. The diagnosis would be facilitated by routine measurement of serum cystine-aminopeptidase levels.

13 patients had during their work up for growth retardation an intravenous arginine load. The urinary amino acid pattern before and after arginine administration was checked in comparison to 10 control patients. There was no significant difference between the individual groups. After the arginine load existed an increased clearance of arginine, cystine, ornithine, lysine and citrulline. The results are compared to the amino acid excretion pattern in two female patients with cystinuria.

Peptides within the knottin family have been shown to possess inherent stability, making them attractive scaffolds for the development of therapeutic and diagnostic agents. Given its remarkable stability to proteases, the cyclic peptide kalata B1 was employed as a scaffold to create a large knottin library displayed on the surface of E. coli. A library exceeding 10(9) variants was constructed by randomizing seven amino acids within a loop of the kalata B1 scaffold and screened using fluorescence-activated cell sorting to identify peptide ligands specific for the active site of human thrombin.

Trichothiodystrophy leading to generalized trichorrhexis nodosa-like hair changes with abnormal hair breakage is described in a 4-year-old girl. A marked deficiency of sulphur and the sulphur-containing amino acid, cystine, was detected in the biochemical analysis of the hair. Further investigation of the hair showed the morphological criteria of trichothiodystrophy. Commonly related symptoms, such as mental retardation, ichthyosis and increased sensitivity to sunlight, were not present in our patient.

Nephropathic cystinosis is a rare and severe disease caused by disruptions in the CTNS gene.
