Prevalence of non-vision-impairing conditions in a village in Chakwal district, Punjab, Pakistan.

PURPOSE: To determine the prevalence of non-vision-impairing ocular conditions (NVIC) and estimate the number of primary eye care treatments per 1000 population per month. METHODS: A cross-sectional study in a random sample of 1670 people was done to determine the load of NVIC in a village in Chakwal district. RESULTS: The prevalence of NVIC was 30.6% (306 per 1000 population). NVIC with the exclusion of presbyopia accounted for 14.6%. The main NVIC were allergic conjunctivitis (3.7%), bacterial conjunctivitis (3.5%), pterygium/pinguicula (2.6%) and acute/chronic dacryocystitis (1%). The ave…

Congenital lacrimal fistula.

PURPOSE: Congenital lacrimal fistula is a rare abnormality of the lacrimal system. The patients may be asymptomatic but treatment of those with symptoms such as epiphora and dacryocystitis is still controversial. METHODS: The clinical findings, methods of surgical treatment and results were evaluated in seven patients (four male, three female) with congenital lacrimal fistula. Three were asymptomatic, types of surgical treatment were fistula excision with dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) (two cases), fistula excision with conjunctival DCR (one case) and closed fistula excision alone (one case). R…

Possibilities and limits of minimal invasive lacrimal surgery.

Endoscopy of the lacrimal drainage system with miniaturized endoscopes has been possible since 1990 and permits the direct evaluation of the … ization is approximately 75%. Unfavorable prognostic factors are submucous scar formations due to a dacryocystitis in the patient's history. Endoscopic findings have also improved the understanding of diseases of the lacrimal drainage system. Punctal stenoses causing epiphora often show intact mucous membranes before and behind the stenosis and it is possible to …

Ocular streptococcal infections.

Streptococcal infections are an important cause of corneal ulcers, endophthalmitis, conjunctivitis, and dacryocystitis. We retrospectively reviewed 53 ocular streptococcal infections diagnosed and followed at Wills Eye Hospital between January 1, 1984, and July 1, 1986. Corneal ulcers (23 of 53; 43%) and endophthalmitis (18 of 53; 34%) constituted a majority of the streptococcal infections in this series. Streptococcal infection was also a common cause of conjunctivitis, but clinical follow-up data were sufficient for inclusion in this series in only a small fraction of conjunctivitis patients…

Keratopathy in a family with the ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting syndrome.

Four members of a family with the ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting (EEC) syndrome and associated keratopathy are presented. The ma … tients, by variation in gene penetrance and expressivity and by differing durations and severity of dacryocystitis and related keratoconjunctivitis. The etiology of the keratopathy appears to be primarily a manifestation of the underlying ectodermal dysplasia with probable contributions from associated tearfilm abnormalities and external ocular infection.

Dacryoadenitis post COVID-19 infection and immunization.

Dacryoadenitis can be a rare presentation following COVID-19 infection or can be an immunological response post COVID-19 vaccination. Herein we report two cases of lacrimal gland involvement, one post COVID-19 infection, and the other post COVID-19 vaccination. A definitive causal relationship, however, remains uncertain.

Predictive Value of Serum Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Titers in Sarcoid-Like Dacryoadenitis.

PURPOSE: To compare serum angiotensin-converting enzyme (sACE) titers in patients with newly diagnosed sarcoid-like dacryoadenitis and nongranulomatous dacryoadenitis. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective comparative case series. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Clinical details and presenting sACE titers were reviewed for patients with newly diagnosed sarcoid-like dacryoadenitis (SLD) and nongranulomatous dacryoadenitis (NGD). All sACE titers were expressed as a percentage of the upper end of normal range ("normalized"). Using Student t test, sACE titers for patients with unilateral SLD were compared with unil

Inflammatory Response in Dry Eye.

PURPOSE: Dry eye is a major ocular pathology worldwide. Although dry eye is a multifactorial disease, recent studies have shown that chronic immunologic processes have a pivotal role in its pathogenesis, characterized by the infiltration of immune cells in the lacrimal glands, elevated levels of tear inflammatory cytokines, and increased density of immune cells in the cornea and conjunctiva. This review describes the recent advances in understanding the relationship between dry eye and inflammation. METHODS: This narrative review is based on searches of recent international literature using t

Suppurative dacroadenitis causing ocular sicca syndrome in classic Wegener's granulomatosis.

Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) is a multisystem vasculitic disorder which can commonly afflict various components of the eye. Here we describe some unusual ocular manifestations of the disease in one patient. A young male with history of upper respiratory tract symptoms including epistaxis, nasal stuffiness and maxillary sinus pain presented with bilateral lacrimal gland abscess and ptosis. Lacrimal gland biopsy revealed granulomatous vasculitis. Lung cavities, positive cytoplasmic-antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies and high titers of serine proteinase-3 antibodies confirmed the diagnosis of

Tuberculous dacryoadenitis in a child.

BACKGROUND: Orbital tuberculosis is rare even in endemic areas. The disease may involve soft tissue, lacrimal gland, or the periosteum or bones of the orbital wall. CASE: We present an Indian girl, who presented with a slowly growing left-sided superotemporal orbital mass, with no significant previous medical history. The swelling turned to an abscess and burst spontaneously giving rise to a discharging sinus. The discharge was negative for any organism on Gram and Giemsa staining. A tuberculin skin test was strongly positive. Incisional biopsy showed caseating granuloma and Langhan 's giant

[Morphological characteristics of actinomycotic dacryocanaliculitis].

The paper presents the results of pathohistological studies of the contents of the lacrimal canaliculi and the fragments of their walls, obtained at canaliculotomy in 25 patients. This permitted 14 cases of actinomycotic dacryocanaliculitis to be identified as drusens of the ray fungus Actinomyces israelii had been found. The reactive structural changes found in the wall of the lacrimal canaliculi due to the presence of fungal infection and foreign bodies in their lumen are described. A morphological study is shown to be effective in revealing the actinomycotic etiology of dacryocanaliculitis.

Canalicular infection caused by Actinomyces.

We present 7 cases of canalicular involvement with Actinomyces collected over a 5-year period. All patients had involvement of one canaliculus, upper or lower, with lacrimal drainage patent to syringing. Curettings obtained by incising the involved canaliculi yielded Actinomyces species (5 cases) and Arachnia propionica (2 cases), typically in association with a mixed bacterial growth. Our results show that these patients often remain undiagnosed for months or even years, and are treated inappropriately for their recurrent symptoms. Despite sensitivity of Actinomyces to a broad spectrum of ant

Bilateral lacrimal duct cyst.

Reports of lacrimal gland cysts have been rare, and mostly of small, unilateral cysts of the palpebral lobes. An unusual case of bilateral, large acquired cysts of the orbital lobe of the lacrimal glands is presented. Pathologic examination showed chronic inflammation and fibrosis of the lacrimal gland structures. We suggest that prolapse of the lacrimal glands with obstruction of the lacrimal ducts, combined with chronic dacryoadenitis, led to cyst formation.
