[Cogan syndrome as a rare cause of deafness].

Cogan syndrome is a rare systemic disease characterized by the occurrence of audiovestibular and ocular symptoms. We present the case of a 62-year-old female patient who received a cochlear implant after unilateral deafness. Despite successful implantation, the disease progressed with chronic headache, recurrent otitis, fluctuating intracochlear impedances, and slowly progressing hearing loss in the contralateral ear. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, the diagnosis of Cogan syndrome was established, and biological therapy was initiated.

Gene therapy for deafness: are we there now?

Approximately half a billion people—5% of the world’s population—suffer from disabling hearing impairment (HI) according to the WHO (http://www.who.int/features/factfiles/deafness/en/). HI commonly hampers speech acquisition, leads to social isolation and increases risk for depression and cognitive decline. One to two per thousand children are born with disabling HI and over 50% of sensorineural HI is caused by defects in individual genes (deafness genes) of which roughly 150 have been identified so far (http://hereditaryhearingloss.org/). In case of profound hearing impairment or deafness, co…

The Reading of Deaf Arabic Children in Israel.

Studies on the reading acquisition of deaf children investigate the similarities and differences in the reading process between these readers and typical hearing readers. There is no consensus on the nature of the reading process among deaf readers, whether they use the same reading processing strategies as typical readers or depend on other strategies to close the gap. The present study aimed to test the types of strategies used to process written words by deaf Arabic readers with prelingual deafness, compared to their hearing peers, and to test the effectiveness of deaf readers' use of these…

Illuminating the deaf experience at STEM conferences.

Deaf professionals experience inequitable access at conferences, but conference hosts can learn to recognize and understand the contributing barriers. Establishing clear accessibility protocols can enhance organizational success and ensure a successful conference.

Effect of Partial Deafness on Voice in Children.

Elevated hearing thresholds cause disturbances in auditory control of voice. This leads to voice disorders that are described by changes in acoustic parameters of voice measured objectively. Voice changes can also be detected by perceptive assessment with GRBAS scale. This article presents the results of the study performed to analyze voice characteristics in a group of children with prelingual partial deafness (PD), a condition with normal hearing at low frequencies and deep hypoacusis (near deafness) at high frequencies. Voice disorders accompanying PD were not a subject of the intensive stu…

Being a Deaf Woman in Bedouin Society.

Israel's Bedouin population, an ethnic minority, has a higher incidence of deafness than that reported in the literature, but is not studied sufficiently. A patriarchal and collective society, in recent years it has undergone accelerated change spurred by Israel's urbanization policy. Deaf women are an inseparable part of Bedouin society, but they are transparent and their needs are not met. In a qualitative study of 23 Bedouin women with congenital deafness who participated in the only social club for the deaf among the Bedouin population in southern Israel, these women were found to exist be…

The Idea of Deafness as Disability in Renaissance Germany.

This essay assesses the degree to which the deaf were regarded as a disabled population in medical, religious, and legal thought during the Renaissance, chronologically identified with the period between approximately 1500 and 1650. The primary geographic focus rests on the German-speaking lands of central Europe. Analysis shows that the idea of deafness as a disability here was composite one, making connections between inability to hear and intellectual impairment, moral deficiency, and disease. This contrasts with recent findings elsewhere in Europe, where intellectuals were more focused on …

The cochlear matrisome: Importance in hearing and deafness.

The extracellular matrix (ECM) consists in a complex meshwork of collagens, glycoproteins, and proteoglycans, which serves a scaffolding fun … t, function and maintenance, as evidenced by the variety of ECM proteins associated with hereditary deafness. This review describes the structural and functional ECM components in the auditory organ and how they are modulated over time and following injury.

Searching for the Molecular Basis of Partial Deafness.

Hearing is an important human sense for communicating and connecting with others. Partial deafness (PD) is a common hearing problem, in which there is a down-sloping audiogram. In this study, we apply a practical system for classifying PD patients, used for treatment purposes, to distinguish two groups of patients: one with almost normal hearing thresholds at low frequencies (PDT-EC, n = 20), and a second group with poorer thresholds at those same low frequencies (PDT-EAS, n = 20). After performing comprehensive genetic testing with a panel of 237 genes, we found that genetic factors can expla…

The Education of the Deaf Child: For Integration or Autonomy?

It is argued that Oralism and Total Communication underestimate the profound nature of deafness and the potential value of fundamental research. The evolution of these philosophies is described, and changes in philosophy are discussed.

Exploring communication difficulties with deaf patients.

One in five people in the UK are deaf, with hearing loss affecting more than 70% of people over the age of 70. Despite this being a higher prevalence than asthma, heart disease or diabetes, deaf people experience persistent health inequalities with poorer experiences and outcomes in disease prevention and management. Clear communication and patient engagement with health are key to better outcomes. Nonetheless, there exist cultural, educational and organisational barriers when addressing communication with patients with hearing loss.Foundation doctors have regular and prolonged contact with th

[Screening for ocular involvement in deaf children].

The association between deafness and visual disorders is frequent. These disorders range from simple refractive disorder to severe disease that can lead to disability. Hence the interest of early screening. This study aims to highlight the importance of multidisciplinary management and of the need for ophthalmological examination in each deaf child. We conducted a prospective monocentric data collection from medical records of 200 children followed for hypoacousia from January 2014 to January 2015. Each child underwent complete ophthalmological examination, ENT examination and clinical examina…

Contrast Sensitivity Abnormalities in Deaf Individuals.

PURPOSE: Hearing impaired children are heavily dependent on their sense of vision to develop efficient communication skills; any contrast sensitivity defect can negatively impact their lives because they are not able to use auditory stimuli to recognize probable dangers in the world around them. The purpose of this study was to determine the contrast sensitivity abnormalities in deaf individuals. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, contrast sensitivity of 15- to 20-year-old high-school boys with hearing disability from Tehran, Iran were evaluated. Sixty-four eyes were tested for contrast

A woman with warts, leg swelling, and deafness.

KEY TEACHING POINTS • We describe a 45-year-old woman with GATA2 deficiency associated with verrucae, lymphedema, immunodeficiency, and a history of infections and skin cancer. • GATA2 deficiency has variable clinical expressivity with differing presentations, including infection, hematopoietic abnormalities, immunodeficiency, lymphedema, and cancer. • Cutaneous manifestations include verruca vulgaris, soft tissue infections, lymphedema, and panniculitis. • Patients may have verrucae that can progress to squamous cell carcinomas; dermatologists therefore play an important role in managing thes
