Deep-Ocular: Improved Transfer Learning Architecture Using Self-Attention and Dense Layers for Recognition of Ocular Diseases.

It is difficult for clinicians or less-experienced ophthalmologists to detect early eye-related diseases. By hand, eye disease diagnosis is labor-intensive, prone to mistakes, and challenging because of the variety of ocular diseases such as glaucoma (GA), diabetic retinopathy (DR), cataract (CT), and normal eye-related diseases (NL). An automated ocular disease detection system with computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) tools is required to recognize eye-related diseases. Nowadays, deep learning (DL) algorithms enhance the classification results of retinograph images. To address these issues, we dev

Predicting pneumonia during hospitalization in flail chest patients using machine learning approaches.

OBJECTIVE: Pneumonia is a common pulmonary complication of flail chest, causing high morbidity and mortality rates in affected patients. The existing methods for identifying pneumonia have low accuracy, and their use may delay antimicrobial therapy. However, machine learning can be combined with electronic medical record systems to identify information and assist in quick clinical decision-making. Our study aimed to develop a novel machine-learning model to predict pneumonia risk in flail chest patients. METHODS: From January 2011 to December 2021, the electronic medical records of 169 adult

AI-assisted placenta pathology in clinical use: barriers and opportunities.

Placental pathology provides critical diagnostic information following pregnancy complications and has the potential to inform mother and infant clinical care. Yet the field faces substantial challenges, including workforce shortages, high inter-observer variability, inconsistent reporting, and ongoing debate regarding clinical utility. Artificial intelligence (AI) and computer vision methods offer potential solutions through automated analysis of both gross photography and digital histology. Recent studies demonstrate technical feasibility across tasks including gestational age prediction, ce

Impact of preoperative body compositions on survival following resection of biliary tract cancer.

BACKGROUND: Although surgical resection is the only potentially curative treatment for biliary tract cancer, the prognosis remains poor after a major operation such as pancreatoduodenectomy or hepatectomy. We aimed to investigate the impact of preoperative body compositions on long-term survival of patients undergoing resection of biliary tract cancer. METHODS: We analysed data of patients diagnosed with biliary tract cancer who underwent surgery from 2009 to 2015. Skeletal muscle area, skeletal muscle radiation attenuation, and visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue areas were measured fro

End-to-end emergency response protocol for tunnel accidents augmentation with reinforcement learning.

Autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) offer cost-effective and flexible solutions for a wide range of real-world applications, particularly in hazardous and time-critical environments. Their ability to navigate autonomously, communicate rapidly, and avoid collisions makes UAVs well suited for emergency response scenarios. However, real-time path planning in dynamic and unpredictable environments remains a major challenge, especially in confined tunnel infrastructures where accidents may trigger fires, smoke propagation, debris, and rapid environmental changes. In such conditions, conventi

Embodied artificial intelligence in robotic orthopaedic surgery: from intelligent assistance to adaptive surgical autonomy.

Despite remarkable advances in robotic orthopaedic surgery over the past three decades, current commercial platforms remain precision-assistance technologies rather than truly adaptive intelligent systems. Embodied Artificial Intelligence (Embodied AI) represents a paradigm shift by enabling robots to perceive, reason, learn, and interact continuously with their physical environment through integrated perception-action loops. This structured narrative review examines the emerging role of Embodied AI in orthopaedic robotic surgery, highlights its conceptual differences from existing platforms,

Vascular Cross-Section, Rather Than Tortuosity, Can Classify First-Pass Outcome of Mechanical Thrombectomy for Ischemic Stroke.

BACKGROUND: Vascular geometry plays an important role in stroke thrombectomy outcomes, but few studies have examined complex characteristics of vessel morphology. The authors hypothesized that engineered vessel cross-section features could be used to predict thrombectomy first-pass effect (FPE). METHODS: The authors analyzed computed tomography angiography and noncontrast computed tomagraphy from 50 patients with anterior circulation stroke thrombectomy. After segmentation, traditional metrics (vessel tortuosity and angulation) were calculated from vessel centerlines that were transformed int

Comparison of the current reasons for undergoing pharmacologic stress during echocardiographic and radionuclide stress testing.

BACKGROUND: Symptom-limited exercise is the preferred method of cardiac stress testing, but pharmacologic testing has been increasing over time. The exact reasons for pharmacologic stress testing have not been rigorously categorized. Thus, we systematically explored the reasons for pharmacologic stress testing in patients referred for cardiac stress imaging. METHODS: We studied consecutive patients referred for stress imaging [stress echocardiography or radionuclide myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI)] at Mount Sinai St Luke's hospital between August 2013 and April 2014.
