Histological observations of bovine tuberculosis in lung and lymph node tissues from British deer.

Deer are recognized as hosts of Mycobacterium bovis and assessing the role of wild cervids in perpetuating tuberculosis among cattle has motivated extensive research on several continents. In this paper, the histopathology of lymph node and lung tuberculous granulomas in M. bovis positive British deer is presented. The overall aim was to seek further insights into the potential for onward transmission from infected deer to other species, including cattle. Samples were obtained from an extensive survey of wild mammals in South-West England and from statutory tuberculosis surveillance. M. bovis …

Post mortem time and season alter subpopulation characteristics of Iberian red deer epididymal sperm.

We have studied the effect of post mortem time and season on sperm subpopulation pattern and characteristics. We used epididymal samples from free-ranging Iberian red deers harvested during the hunting season. We studied samples at different moments of the year (rut, transition period and post-rut), and at different times post mortem (up to 4 days). Sperm were extracted from the cauda epididymis and their motility was evaluated by means of a CASA system. A principal component and clustering analysis were carried out to identify subpopulations. Post mortem time caused a significant decrease in …

An epizootic of adenovirus-induced hemorrhagic disease in captive black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus).

Ten fawns and four adult black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus) in a captive herd died as a result of adenovirus-induced hemorrhagic disease. Acute, systemic infections were characterized by hemorrhagic enteropathy, pulmonary edema, and occasional ulceration of the upper alimentary tract. Localized infections were limited to the upper alimentary tract and included stomatitis, pharyngitis, mandibular osteomyelitis, and rumenitis. In deer with acute, systemic infections, a diagnosis was made by histopathology and immunohistochemistry. The serum neutralization test was useful for confirming a di…

A new tick-borne encephalitis-like virus infecting New England deer ticks, Ixodes dammini.

To determine if eastern North American Ixodes dammini, like related ticks in Eurasia, maintain tick-borne encephalitis group viruses, we analyzed ticks collected from sites where the agent of Lyme disease is zoonotic. Two viral isolates were obtained by inoculating mice with homogenates from tick salivary glands. The virus, which was described by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction and direct sequencing of the amplification products, was similar to, but distinct from, Powassan virus and is provisionally named "deer tick virus." Enzootic tick-borne encephalitis group viruses accompa…

Infectious keratoconjunctivitis in free-ranging mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) from Zion National Park, Utah.

An epizootic of infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IK) was studied opportunistically in free-ranging mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) from Zion National Park, Utah (USA), from November 1992 to March 1994. Moraxella sp. and Chlamydia sp. were isolated from the conjunctiva of two of seven deer. In addition, Thelazia californiensis occurred on the conjunctivas of six of seven deer. Based on field observations, adults appeared to be affected clinically at a higher incidence during both years as opposed to juveniles. Corneal opacity was the most apparent clinical sign from 1992 to 1993. However, in th…

Short report: density of Lyme disease spirochetes within deer ticks collected from zoonotic sites.

We determined whether the density of Lyme disease spirochetes varied between individual host-seeking deer ticks. Guts were dissected from 30 adult Ixodes dammini collected from three intensely zoonotic coastal Massachusetts sites, and the number of Borrelia burgdorferi present was estimated by a modified counting technique using indirect immunofluorescence. A median of 1,925 spirochetes was observed; ticks from the three sites contained similar numbers of spirochetes. No tick contained more than 4,500 spirochetes. Initial experimental reports establishing the efficiency of spirochetal transmis…

Male scent-induced analgesia in the deer mouse, Peromyscus maniculatus: involvement of benzodiazepine systems.

Exposure to bedding taken from the soiled home cage of an isolated male resident elicited a significant increase in the nociceptive responses of male deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus artemisiae, from mixed sex pairs. The analgesia induced by exposure to the male scent was insensitive to the opiate antagonist, naloxone, and was blocked by either pre- or post-olfactory exposure injections of the benzodiazepine antagonist, Ro 15-1788, or agonist, diazepam. This non-opioid analgesia was of brief duration (15-30 min) and rapid onset, being evident after 1 min of exposure to the olfactory cues. Bed…

Haemolytic disease associated with Leptospira interrogans serovar pomona in red deer calves (Cervus elaphus).

Three red deer calves (Cervus elaphus) died with a haemolytic disease associated with infection by Leptospira interrogans serovar pomona. Infection within the herd was more prevalent than disease. Sera from 16 herd mates were tested by the microscopic agglutination test (MAT) and 12 had leptospiral titres, the majority to serovar pomona. A few calves had titres to balcunica and hardjo. Urine was obtained for culture from six of these calves and serovar pomona was isolated from five with titres to pomona, and hardjo from one with a titre to hardjo but not pomona. A fourth calf died with severe …

A Simplified and Efficient Protocol for DNA Isolation from Deer Antlers and Prepared Trophy Skulls.

A simple, fast, and cost-effective organic solvent-based protocol was developed for DNA extraction from deer antlers and prepared trophy skulls, eliminating the need for commercial kits or cryogenic grinding. The method combines bead-based mechanical homogenization with a 4 h enzymatic digestion in EDTA buffer containing N-lauryl sarcosine and Proteinase K, followed by phenol-chloroform-isoamyl alcohol purification and centrifugal filtration. DNA quality and quantity were evaluated using agarose gel electrophoresis, Qubit fluorometry, and Nanodrop spectrophotometry. The protocol was tested on …

Evaluation of a detomidine-ketamine-azaperone combination for the chemical immobilization of fallow deer (Dama dama).

The fallow deer (Dama dama) is a widely distributed cervid in Europe, often managed in enclosed settings for conservation, education, or hunting purposes. Chemical immobilization is frequently required during routine handling; however, fallow deer remain understudied in the scientific literature with regard to standardized anesthetic protocols. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of an anesthetic protocol combining detomidine (0.2 mg/kg), ketamine (2 mg/kg), and azaperone (0.3 mg/kg) in 22 captive fallow deer. Animals were immobilized for clinical procedures, including health …

Effects of vasectomy on breeding-related movement and activity in free-ranging white-tailed deer.

BACKGROUND: An abundance of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in suburban communities can lead to problems such as increased deer-vehicle collisions (DVCs), tick-borne illnesses, and forest degradation. Deer populations can be managed using traditional lethal methods; however, these methods are often impractical, ineffective, or socially unacceptable, prompting interest in management alternatives, including fertility control. Some fertility control methods (such as vasectomy, tubal ligation, and porcine zona pellucida-based vaccines) cause unsuccessfully bred females to experience mul…

Evolved changes in reflex control of the cardiovascular system in deer mice native to high altitude.

The cold and hypoxic conditions at high altitude place high demands on the cardiovascular system to sustain circulatory O2 transport. High-altitude natives have evolved to overcome cold hypoxia, but the cardiovascular mechanisms involved remain poorly understood in most taxa. Here, we investigated the evolved changes in reflex control of cardiovascular function in deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) native to high altitude. High- and low-altitude populations of deer mice were each bred in captivity and then chronically acclimated to warm normoxia (25°C, ∼20 kPa O2) or cold hypoxia (5°C, 12 kPa …

Assessing the potential role of deer in the dissemination of Mycobacterium bovis infection to cattle in Northern Ireland.

Mycobacterium bovis, the causative agent of animal tuberculosis, exhibits a broad host range - infecting, inducing pathology and transmitting from both bovine and wildlife hosts. Considerable effort has been extended to understanding the role wildlife may play in persistence and spread of infection. Infected cervids can spread infection to conspecifics and sympatric livestock as observed in the white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginanus) population of Michigan, USA. However, in other territories, there is debate about whether cervids act as maintenance or spillover hosts, with ecological context…

The autumn activity patterns and time budgets of Forest musk deer (Moschus berezovskii) in captivity.

Activity patterns and time budgets play a crucial role in the successful farming and management of animals. In this study, the behavior patterns of 53 forest musk deer (Moschus berezovskii) were analyzed from October 2nd to 16th, 2021, throughout the day and night. The results showed a distinct dawn-dusk activity rhythm in the captive forest musk deer with a peak activity observed at dawn (07:00 - 10:00) and dusk (16:00 - 19:00). Additionally, there were smaller activity peaks lasting less than an hour during the nighttime (00:00 - 04:00). Comparing behavior ratios between peak and off-peak pe…

Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in free-ranging white-tailed deer in the United States.

SARS-CoV-2 is a zoonotic virus with documented bi-directional transmission between people and animals. Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from humans to free-ranging white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) poses a unique public health risk due to the potential for reservoir establishment where variants may persist and evolve. We collected 8,830 respiratory samples from free-ranging white-tailed deer across Washington, D.C. and 26 states in the United States between November 2021 and April 2022. We obtained 391 sequences and identified 34 Pango lineages including the Alpha, Gamma, Delta, and Omicron…

Limited Capacity of Deer To Serve as Zooprophylactic Hosts for Borrelia burgdorferi in the Northeastern United States.

Because deer are considered to be incompetent reservoirs of the agent of Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto) in the northeastern United States, they may serve as zooprophylactic or "dilution" hosts if larvae of the deer tick vector (Ixodes dammini, "northern" clade of Ixodes scapularis) frequently feed on them. To determine whether host-seeking nymphal deer ticks commonly feed on deer as larvae, we used a real-time PCR host bloodmeal remnant identification assay to identify the host on which these ticks had fed. Nymphal lone star ticks (Amblyomma americanum) were collected simult…

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in the endangered Père David's deer (Elaphurus davidianus) in China.

Père David's deer (Elaphurus davidianus) is an emblematic endangered species and regarded as a national treasure, toxoplasmosis is a serious zoonotic parasitic disease for wild animals. Little is known about the prevalence of antibodies to this parasite in Père David's deer. In this study, sera from 43 wild Père David's deer, from Dafeng nature reserve China were tested for antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii by MAT. The investigation showed that antibodies to toxoplasma were detected in 8 of 43 (18.60%, 95% CI 6.97-30.24) samples. Seroprevalence ranged from 15.00% to 21.74% between the different …
