Periodontal diseases as a source of halitosis: a review of the evidence and treatment approaches for dentists and dental hygienists.

Bad breath (halitosis) is an important social complaint. In most cases (≥90%), the cause of halitosis can be found within the oral cavity. Under this circumstance, the term oral malodor applies. It affects both healthy and periodontally diseased individuals. Oral malodor is mainly caused by a microbial degradation of both sulfur-containing and nonsulfur-containing amino acids into volatile, bad-smelling gases. Anaerobic gram-negative bacteria, the same species that have been linked to periodontal diseases, are especially involved in this process, explaining why clinicians often associate oral

An investigation into dentists' management methods of dental trauma to maxillary permanent incisors in Victoria, Australia.

Trauma to anterior teeth in children could become a long-term problem to dental health. To a large extent, the management actions of the dentists involved will determine the clinical outcome and, in turn, these actions will be related to their levels of knowledge. The aim of this study was to investigate dentists' knowledge of managing traumatic injuries to maxillary permanent incisors in children. A self-completion questionnaire containing 19 questions on management methods of treating dental trauma was mailed to 693 dentists in Victoria, Australia. The response rate achieved was 61%. [Clinical case of the month. Discomfort at the dentist's office: latex allergy, a diagnosis often unrecognized].

We report a case of urticaria with Quincke's oedema due to latex allergy appearing after dental care. The clinical manifestations of latex hypersensitivity are variable, from simple contact urticaria to generalised anaphylactic symptoms (Quincke's oedema, anaphylactic shock). Immunologically, it corresponds to an immediate-type hypersensitivity mediated by specific IgE antibodies. The diagnosis can be confirmed by skin prick-testing, determination of serum specific IgE antibodies, or realistic provocation tests. At present, latex avoidance is the only available treatment and is the key to prev

Patient Expectations and Dentists' Perceptions of Those Expectations in Dental Implant Therapy: A Mirror-Design Study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Oral healthcare succeeds not only when treatment is biologically sound but when its outcome meets patient expectations, making expectation management a measurable component of care quality. Patient satisfaction in dental implant therapy is strongly influenced by pre-treatment expectations, yet differences between patient expectations and dentists' perceptions of those expectations remain poorly characterized. This study compared the two using a mirror-design survey. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was administered to adult patients (n = 250) and dentists involved in i…

Prevalence of Musculoskeletal Disorders Among Dentists in Primary Healthcare Settings in Qatar: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Introduction Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are prevalent among dental professionals due to the physical demands of clinical work, including awkward postures and repetitive motions. These conditions pose a risk to both practitioner well-being and service continuity. In Qatar, however, data on the extent of this issue within primary healthcare settings remains limited. This study investigates the prevalence of MSDs among dentists at the Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) and explores contributing occupational factors. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the prevalence …

Librarians, Dentists, Journalists, and Undergrads: A Case Study Implementing a Journalism Teaching Hospital Within Marginalized Communities.

This study considers a practice-based learning project in which 173 undergraduates enrolled in a journalism class reported on oral health issues in marginalized communities. Health fairs at local libraries provided a starting place for students to cover oral health care, an underreported topic in the media. Three nonprofit journalism organizations partnered with the effort to publish student-produced content. Through written responses from all students and 30 in-depth interviews with professional journalists, librarians, health professionals, and students, this qualitative case study presents

Carpal tunnel syndrome in dentists compared to other populations: A nationwide population-based study in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Dentists may be at a higher risk of developing carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) because of their use of frequent wrist and vibratory instruments at work; however, this issue remains unclear. Therefore, we conducted this study to clarify it. METHODS: Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database was used for this nationwide population-based study. We identified 11,084 dentists, 74,901 non-dentist healthcare professionals (HCPs), and identical number of age- and sex-matched participants from the general population. Participants who had the diagnosis of CTS before 2007 were excluded…
