Impact of primary dentition malocclusion on the oral health-related quality of life in preschoolers.

BACKGROUND: Malocclusion is a condition frequently seen in primary dentition due to the interaction of environmental, genetic and behavioural factors. The occurrence of some types of malocclusions can have an impact on oral health-related quality of life in children. Hence, the present study aimed to verify the impact of primary dentition malocclusion on oral health-related quality of life in preschool children. METHODS: A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Florianopolis, Brazil, with a representative sample of 1050 preschoolers aged between 2 and 5 years, randomly select…

Dentition and body condition: tooth wear as a correlate of weight loss in roe deer.

BACKGROUND: In many mammalian species, once the permanent teeth have erupted, the only change to dentition is a gradual loss of tooth surface/height through wear. The crown of the teeth cannot be repaired once worn. When dental crown tissue has been depleted due to wear, the animal is expected to have a suboptimal body condition. We evaluated the role of tooth wear in causing a reduction of physical condition in adult roe deer females (Capreolus capreolus). RESULTS: The progressive wearing of the lower cheek teeth was assessed in a Northern Apennines (Italy) population with a new scoring sche…

Timetable for oral prevention in childhood--developing dentition and oral habits: a current opinion.

As most of the etiologic factors of malocclusion are of genetic origin and thus cannot be prevented, environmental causative factors have become the focus for correction. Early interception of oral habits may be an important step in order to prevent occlusal disturbances in children. The identification of an abnormal habit and the assessment of its potential immediate and long-term effects on the dentition and potentially on the craniofacial complex should be made at an early stage. This paper focuses on the most common oral habits influencing dentofacial growth in childhood and management of …

Prevalence and distribution of anomalies of permanent dentition in 9584 Japanese high school students.

This study investigated the prevalence and distribution of anomalies of permanent dentition in the current Japanese population by examining an unbiased sample. We conducted a survey of dental anomalies by mass dental screening at eight high schools in 2012. Participants were all students with permanent dentition. Dental anomalies were classified as hypodontia, supernumerary teeth, peg-shaped teeth, fused teeth, and talon cusps. Students with one or more dental anomalies on oral examination were given a differential diagnosis by three specialists. The final sample comprised 9584 participants (5…

Exploring the effect of dentition, dental decay and familiality on oral health using metabolomics.

As a proof of principle, we used an untargeted global metabolic profiling of saliva to understand the biochemical processes associated with dental decay, dentition (primary and secondary tooth eruption) and familiality in a sample of 25 sibling pairs. Pairs were selected to represent four different combinations of dentition and tooth health: (1) both siblings with primary teeth and no decay (n=5); (2) both siblings with primary teeth and discordant for dental decay (n=6); (3) both siblings with primary teeth and dental decay (n=4); and (4) one sibling with primary teeth the other with mixed de…

Hypodontia and delayed dentition as the primary manifestation of cleidocranial dysplasia presenting with a diagnostic dilemma.

Cleidocranial dysplasia is a rare autosomal disorder which manifests as partial or complete absence of clavicles, multiple supernumerary teeth, and delayed closure of fontanelle. Classical cases of cleidocranial dysplasia are easily diagnosed very early in the life. However, cases with partial manifestation of the syndrome and noncontributory family history are difficult to diagnose. Here, we report a case of 8.5-year-old girl child who presented with delayed tooth development (without any supernumerary teeth), anterior open fontanelle, and normal clavicles, thus resulting in a diagnostic dile

Clinical and radiographic evaluation and comparison of six cases of fusion involving the primary dentition.

Fusion occurs infrequently, but could cause esthetic, spacing, and periodontal problems. An understanding of fused teeth and their associated problems is important to provide prophylactic measures, thereby preventing or minimizing possible complications. The purpose of this case report was to highlight the infrequency of fused primary teeth by virtue of the number of such cases reported in the literature. Six cases of asymptomatic dental twinning anomalies in the primary dentition are reported in this study, and a clinical and radiographic presentation of the cases of fusion of primary incisor…

Aggressive external root resorption of the entire dentition accompanied by osteolysis: a case report.

A healthy Caucasian male lost all of his teeth because of aggressive cervical, apical, and lateral root resorption over a period of 11 years. Microscopically, there was no sign of reparative cementum apposition, but cell-rich fibrous connective tissue filling the deep resorptions was seen. The resorbed teeth were surrounded by fibro-osseous tissue of osteolytic appearance, as noted during radiologic examination. Radiography showed the osteolytic processes to regress dramatically with the removal or loss of teeth. No underlying systemic or local factor was identified. In spite of endodontic and
