Increased frequency of restless legs syndrome in atopic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is characterized by an unpleasant sensation in the legs, which is difficult to describe, but produces an urge to move the legs frequently. AIM: To assess the prevalence and severity of RLS in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) and patients with psoriasis, and to investigate the factors potentially associated with RLS. METHODS: In total, 253 people were enrolled (120 with AD, 50 with psoriasis and 83 healthy controls). A diagnosis of RLS was made according to the criteria of the International RLS Study Group (IRLSSG), and severity was assessed using

Risk factors for infantile atopic dermatitis and recurrent wheezing.

BACKGROUND: The pathogenic mechanisms of atopic dermatitis (AD) and recurrent wheezing (RW) during infancy are not fully understood. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated immunological markers associated with AD and RW during infancy. METHODS: We followed a cohort (n = 314) from birth to 14 months of age. Some of the participants underwent a physical examination and blood test at 6 and 14 months of age. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis were performed to find which immunological markers could be risk factors for AD and RW. RESULT

Recent findings in mouse models for human atopic dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease, with its major clinical feature being persistent itch sensation in the skin. There are extremely few animal models to reproduce the complicated condition of a patient with AD; therefore researchers have been confronted with some difficulties in pathologic analysis and drug development for AD. Although various models have been proposed and developed, there is no doubt that the spontaneous mouse model, NC mice, gave the greatest impact. NC mice enabled us to analyze pathogenesis of allergic skin abnormalities as well as development o

Th17-cells in atopic dermatitis stimulate orthodontic root resorption.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate how atopic dermatitis (AD) contributes to root resorption during orthodontic tooth movement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Atopic dermatitis model mice and wild-type mice were subjected to an excessive orthodontic force (OF) to induce movement of the upper first molars. The expression levels of the tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP), IL-17, IL-6, and RANKL proteins were determined in the periodontal ligament (PDL) by an immunohistochemical analysis. Furthermore, the effects of the compression force on co-cultures of CD4(+) cells from AD pat

A novel organogermanium protected atopic dermatitis induced by oxazolone.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin that is often associated with other atopic diseases, such as asthma and allergic rhinitis. Although topical steroids have widely been prescribed for patients with AD, skin abnormalities are frequently observed after prolonged steroid treatment. In this study, a novel water-soluble organogermanium compound (Ge-Vit) was prepared because organogermanium is a known INF-gamma inducer. The Ge-Vit treatment decreased the basal TEWL and IgE production and attenuated the disruption of the skin barrier function in a murine model of chr

Atopic dermatitis associated with HPV 38 lower leg verrucosis.

We describe a 45-year-old woman with atopic dermatitis who presented with a progressive, papular eruption over her anterior lower legs that began 30 years earlier. Biopsy with polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed lichenified plane warts harboring human papillomavirus 38 DNA. No signs or family history of epidermodysplasia verruciformis existed. Local trauma from shaving, barrier dysfunction, and decreased cell immunity and interferon production associated with atopic dermatitis are likely responsible for this presentation of lower leg verrucosis.

Atopic dermatitis and allergic reactions to individual fragrance chemicals.

BACKGROUND: Allergic contact dermatitis prevalence is reported as equal in atopic and nonatopic dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis is under-represented in those with allergic contact dermatitis to agents having cutaneous and dietary exposure. We compared rates of atopic dermatitis between patients with allergic contact dermatitis arising out of individual fragrance chemicals with known oral/cutaneous exposure against exclusively cutaneous exposure. METHODS: Between 1982 and 2007, 37 065 dermatitis patients were tested with Fragrance mix I. Those who were positive were tested for individual fragran

Vitiligo with inflammatory raised borders, associated with atopic dermatitis.

A 31-year-old man had had atopic dermatitis since childhood and developed vitiligo with inflammatory raised borders 5 years prior to presentation. Immunohistochemically, CD4+ T cells infiltrated predominantly in the raised border of vitiligo, while CD8+ T cells were present just outside of the borders, suggesting that CD8+ cells were an antecedent to the CD4+ cells. Despite the presence of atopic dermatitis, the percentage of CXCR3+ CD4+ Th1 cells increased in the patient's peripheral blood, compared with a representative atopic patient showing a high percentage of CCR4+CD4+ Th2 cells. This ca

[Atopic dermatitis: The hygiene hypothesis: Prevention through helminth infections?].

The prevalence of atopic diseases has steadily increased over the past decades. While genetic predisposition remains an important risk factor, environmental conditions appear to be additional relevant trigger factors, leading to the development of the "hygiene hypothesis". Current data indicates that atopic respiratory diseases seem to occur less frequently following helminth infections. This effect may be due to the induction of anti-inflammatory cytokines during the helminth infection. In contrast, atopic dermatitis seems to represent a separate entity influenced by more than "allergic sensi

Current epidemiology of atopic dermatitis in south-eastern Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common pruritic, eczematous skin disorder that runs a chronic and relapsing course. In Nigeria, it is currently on the increase, particularly amongst infants, and has created cost burdens for families. It occurs in association with a personal or family history of asthma, allergic rhinitis and conjunctivitis. Major and minor criteria exist as guidelines for arriving at a diagnosis of AD, and surveys from Western countries have shown that these features, in particular the minor features, vary with ethnicity and genetic background and can be used to aid dia

[Natural killer cell activity among patients with atopic dermatitis].

We examined natural killer (NK) activity in 128 patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) to investigate the relationships between NK activity and severity of dermatitis, duration of disease, and mental states. The results showed the following: 1) No relationship was shown between severity of dermatitis and NK activity, neither between NK activity nor eosinophilic counts nor serum IgE. 2) Patients with longer duration of AD lesions showed significantly lower NK activity (P=0.036). The significant relationship was recognized between severity of dermatitis and the duration of disease (P=0.014). 3) No

[Etiologic implication of foods in atopic dermatitis: evidence against].

Atopic dermatitis is a typical chronic inflammatory skin disease that usually occurs in individuals with a personal or family history of atopy. Children with atopic dermatitis frequently present IgE-mediated food sensitization, the most commonly involved foods being egg and cow's milk. However, controversy currently surrounds whether food allergy is an etiological factor in atopic dermatitis or whether it is simply an associated factor, accompanying this disease as one more expression of the patient's atopic predisposition. Approximately 40 % of neonates and small children with moderate-to-sev

Smallpox vaccination: Risk considerations for patients with atopic dermatitis.

As the threat of bioterrorism with pathogenic microbes such as smallpox virus (Variola major) increases, the question of widespread voluntary vaccination with smallpox (vaccinia) vaccines is being carefully considered. A major challenge lies in the ability to protect the population from the disease while minimizing the considerable side effects from the vaccine. Individuals with active or quiescent atopic dermatitis are at increased risk for vaccinia complications. The nature of these complications and other considerations are summarized in this rostrum.

Tacrolimus clinical studies for atopic dermatitis and other conditions.

The first topical immunomodulator approved for human use, tacrolimus ointment (Protopic, Fujisawa, Healthcare, Inc, Deerfield, IL), has been shown to be effective and safe in the treatment of children (aged 2 years and older) and adults with atopic dermatitis (AD). Clinical trials conducted worldwide have involved 12,000 patients, with safety and efficacy data available for up to 3 years of treatment. In addition to its beneficial effects in the management of AD, topical tacrolimus has also been reported to be of benefit in other immunologically mediated skin diseases including: hand dermatiti

Adult height in patients with childhood onset atopic dermatitis.

Cross sectional studies have reported impaired growth in children with atopic dermatitis. If this growth impairment is irreversible, it would be expected to adversely influence final height attainment. The standing heights and other anthropometric parameters were assessed in 35 adults with onset of atopic dermatitis before 5 years of age and a control group of 35 adults with adult onset contact dermatitis or psoriasis. There was no significant difference in the standing height SD score, mid-parental height SD score, sitting height SD score, subischial leg length SD score, nor body mass index b

Can cyclosporin A induce permanent remission of atopic dermatitis?

Three adult patients, who had suffered from severe therapy-resistant atopic dermatitis since childhood, were treated with long-term (29, 44 and 22 months) low-dose (maintenance dose: 0.5-0.7 mg/kg) cyclosporin A (CyA). All responded rapidly within 3-5 weeks and exhibited only minor exacerbations during the first phases of therapy. No relapse occurred in any of the patients after drug withdrawal. All patients remained symptom-free, except for occasional very mild and easily manageable localized lesions, for follow-up periods of 34, 13 and 22 months. Side-effects were minimal or tolerable (mild
