Occupational allergic contact dermatitis to nitromethane.

Nitromethane has wide industrial and commercial application as a polar solvent for adhesives and acrylics as well as explosive fuel. Allergic contact dermatitis to this chemical has not been described previously. The authors documented allergic contact hand dermatitis in 4 coworkers who similarly handled an adhesive solvent containing nitromethane. All 4 cases were confirmed by patch testing and resolved after allergen avoidance.

Mascaras may cause irritant contact dermatitis.

The majority of adverse effects of cosmetics have been attributed to soaps in Dutch and English studies, but to eye makeup in a recent Swedish study. The reactions may be caused by irritants or by sensitizing substances. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the irritation potential of commercially available mascaras. The mascaras were exposed to the skin in aluminium chambers. The skin reaction was evaluated using both visual assessments of erythema and non-invasive measurements of the skin reaction. Seven mascaras were tested on 15 healthy individuals in a randomized and blinded fashi

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis in Singapore.

Singapore has a resident population of 3,000,000 and a workforce of 1,780,000. Most are employed in manufacturing, services and commerce (245,000). From 1996 to 1998, 3472 cases were notified to the Ministry of Manpower and confirmed as occupational diseases. Noise-induced hearing loss accounted for 82% of cases, while only 11% of cases were industrial dermatitis. Occupational allergic contact dermatitis was not common, comprising approximately one third of the 369 cases of industrial dermatitis that were notified. However, we believe that the majority of cases are not notified to the authorit

Allergic contact dermatitis from ciclopirox olamine.

A 50-year-old man with interdigital tinea pedis developed an allergic dermatitis spreading from the toes to the lower shins. Patch tests were strongly positive to ciclopirox olamine 1% pet. Sensitization to this topical antifungal agent has rarely been reported in the literature.

Epidermal cytokines in experimental contact dermatitis.

Topical exposure to a variety of xenobiotics may result in irritant as well as allergic contact dermatitis both in rodents and in humans. Despite their induction by different mechanisms, they cannot be differentiated by macroscopic appearance and, by histological examination they are both generally characterized by a perivascular mononuclear cell infiltrate and capillary hyperpermeability. Recently, cytokines, a family of inducible glycoproteins that play a pivotal role in immune and inflammatory reactions, have been identified as useful tools for differentiation of irritant and allergic conta

Leukoderma following occupational allergic contact dermatitis.

We describe 2 cases of occupational allergic contact dermatitis followed by leukoderma. The 1st case was a 49-year-old wood machinist who developed leukoderma in areas of contact dermatitis involving his lips, neck, hands and forearms and was found to be allergic to colophony and pine sawdust on patch testing. The 2nd case involved a 44-year-old man who worked as an epoxy applicator in a ceramics factory. He developed depigmentation in areas of contact dermatitis involving his face, hands, forearms, back, thighs and legs and was found on patch testing to be allergic to epoxy resin. The appeara

Contact dermatitis for primary care providers.

Contact dermatitis is an eczematous dermatitis developing at a site where the skin has been in direct contact with the cutaneous irritant or allergen from the environment. Irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) is the most common form. Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is inflammation of the skin caused by an antigen that elicits a type IV hypersensitivity reaction. Clinical evaluation and judgment are a critical part of the process. Patch testing in an objective method to aid in differentiating ACD from ICD and of verifying responsible allergens.

Allergic contact dermatitis from azo dyes.

Contact allergy to textile dyes usually occurs with disperse dyes of the azo or anthraquinone groups. A case is reported of a woman with clinical features of contact allergy to coloured nylon stockings who had multiple sensitivities to dyes of different azo groups.

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis from cyanoacrylate.

Cyanoacrylates are widely used in adhesive techniques. Cyanoacrylate adhesives differ physically for the different needs of application, and chemically in function of the size of ester molecules. A 40-year-old man employed at the National Mint and Stamp factory presented with hyperkeratotic lesions on the fingers of the right hand. His job consisted of fixing microchips to plastic phone cards with Loctite Series 414. Patch testing confirmed sensitivity to cyanoacrylates. After the diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis was established, the patient, to be cured of the dermatitis, changed his

[Propacetamol and new occupational contact dermatitis].

We describe the cases of three hospital nurses who presented eczematous lesions on the hands and eyelids. They worked in surgery department or in post anaesthesia recovery room, all preparing syringes of Pro-Dafalgan (propacetamol: parenteral paracetamol form). They were not sensitive to oral paracetamol or occupational products and latex. During week-end or holidays when they stopped handling Pro-Dafalgan, the eczema recovered but relapsed on working. A few cases are described in the literature so precautions begin to be preconized for healthcare workers but they are not usually in practice.

[Contact dermatitis following cardiac pacemaker implantation].

The authors report a case illustrating the causality between the appearance of contact eczema and the implantation of a cardiac pacemaker. To the authors' knowledge, only 11 cases of eczema secondary to the implantation of a pacemaker have been previously reported, all in dermatological journals. In 60% of caes, the lesions were observed over the pacemaker implantation and the appearance of the rash varied from 2 days to 24 months. The causal allergens were mainly the metallic and plastic components. The physiopathological mechanisms, though not completely understood, are related to cellular i

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis from spices.

About 1000 patients were investigated at our clinic during 1991-1995 for occupational skin disease, and 5 had occupational allergic contact dermatitis from spices. The patients were chefs, or kitchen, coffee room, and restaurant workers. All patients had hand (or finger) dermatitis. The causative spices were: garlic, cinnamon, ginger, allspice and clove. The same patients also had allergic patch test reactions to foods: tomato, lettuce and carrot. Paprika elicited a weak allergic patch test reaction in 2 patients. Occupational allergic contact dermatitis from spices is relatively rare, but nee
