Occupational skin diseases comprise a wide spectrum of conditions. Under epidemiological aspects, occupational contact dermatitis that is usually manifested on the hands is the most frequent occupational skin disease with an estimated average incidence rate of 0.7-1.5 cases per 1,000 workers per year. Irritant dermatitis is due to individual susceptibility and the exposure to irritants such as wet work combined with detergents or other hydrophilic irritants or solvents at the workplace. Chronic irritant dermatitis is a risk factor for delayed-type sensitization and subsequently allergic contac

BACKGROUND: Inpatient tertiary prevention of occupational skin diseases is indicated when the employee is threatened with loosing their job. Earlier studies have shown that with intensive tertiary preventive measures, 2/3 of such individuals can continue their jobs long-term. Data on the effectiveness of tertiary prevention for various occupational groups has not been previously available.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The outcome of all participants treated in the year 2002 was analyzed according to occupational groups with respect to diagnosis, medical intervention prior and during the inpatient pe

The incidence of occupational dermatitis of the hands is particularly high in the hairdressing trade. To elucidate the role of various risk factors, and to ultimately improve primary prevention of occupational hand dermatitis, a prospective cohort study was conducted between 1992 and 1997, including 2352 hairdressing trainees. Already six weeks after the start of training (median) 35.4% had--usually mild--irritant skin changes, mainly involving the interdigital web spaces. These were associated with subsequent, possibly more severe, hand dermatitis. Reduced exposure to wet work, i.e., improved

At a major fish factory in northern Norway, workers employed in fish-stick and fillet production participated in a survey on skin diseases. 122 (80.1%) of the workers in the fish-stick section responded, but only 60.7% of the fillet workers. Clinical examination and patch testing revealed 16 cases of occupational dermatitis among workers in fish stick production, 3 of whom had contact urticaria from mustard and 8 from fish. There were only found 6 cases of occupational dermatitis among fillet workers; 3 reacted to fish and 3 had irritant contact dermatitis. Working conditions are described for

The aims of the study were to assess the prevalence of and association between occupational dermatitis and possible risk factors in gardeners and greenhouse workers living on Funen, describe the distribution of different types of eczema and detect the allergens most commonly involved. A cross-sectional study, based on a postal questionnaire and subsequent patch testing of selected persons was carried out in 1958 gardeners. The response rate was 84.6%, and among 250 persons patch tested the most frequently sensitizing occupational allergens were plants of the Compositae family and the fungicide

BACKGROUND: Chronic hand eczema (CHE) is a common dermatitis with morphological and aetiological heterogeneity. Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a major aetiology, and patch testing (PT) is essential to characterize CHE and guide its treatment and prevention.
OBJECTIVES: Determine the prevalence of ACD in CHE patients, describe relevant allergens, and identify differences in atopic and occupational settings.
METHODS: We conducted a multicentric retrospective observational study, based on PT results of CHE patients evaluated between 2021 and 2023, in Portuguese dermatology departments, co

Dermatoses belong to the most frequent occupational diseases. Many of them have an early onset. The dermatoses which appear in early childhood or in adolescence often heal early. However, there are also many patients who continue to have recurrences and exacerbations of their dermatoses into adult life, which is important to know in connection with choice of occupation and occupational health. Occupational problems in patients with atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, allergic contact dermatitis, polymorphus light eruption and acne vulgaris are discussed. Some of the results from a follow-up of 549 i

BACKGROUND: Five workers from a plant manufacturing concrete wall panels and beams were referred to our department because of suspected occupational dermatitis. When patch tested, 3 workers reacted to potassium dichromate. Four workers reacted to ethylenediamine dihydrochloride, without any obvious exposure. Owing to the high proportion of workers with recent-onset skin disease, an investigation of all workers at the plant was initiated.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the prevalence of occupational dermatitis and contact allergy in the workers at the plant.
METHODS: All 24 workers at the plant u

Because of the widespread repartition of allergens, allergic contact dermatitis is the most common inflammatory skin disease. It's the best model of dilated hypersensibility mediated by T lymphocytes cells. Atopic dermatitis and irritative dermatitis are to be distinguished to contact dermatitis. The aetiological diagnosis is the most important step of management of patients with that disease because it's the best way to avoid recurrences. The identification of cause is based on aetiological interrogatory and epicutaneous tests with 23 allergens completed with personnel products and specialise

Four hundred and sixty-two patients suffering from primary irritant hand dermatitis were sent postal questionnaires after 1-16 years regarding the outcome of their dermatitis. Two hundred and thirteen patients replied (a compliance rate of 46%). Of the 213 replies 188 were accepted for analysis, of whom only 58 (30.8%) had complete remission of their dermatitis, whilst 130 patients (69.2%) had continuous, or intermittent disease. Of sixty-four patients who changed their occupation only twenty-one (32.8%) had complete remission of their dermatitis as opposed to thirty-seven (29.8%) of 124 who c

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND. Protein contact dermatitis was originally defined in 1976 by Hjorth and Roed-Petersen as a distinct kind of dermatitis seen in patients with occupational food contact. Even though occupational skin diseases are frequent in Denmark, little attention has been paid to protein contact dermatitis, and the frequency is unknown.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the frequency of occupational food-related hand dermatoses and test results in patients occupationally exposed to foods.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study based on examinations, including skin prick testing

Occupational skin diseases are the most frequent occupational diseases. Certain industries are at a particularly high risk. Important factors to consider include percutaneous absorption and alterations in resistance to microbial agents. The most common condition is contact dermatitis, usually irritant but frequently causing allergy. Other selected conditions include photosensitization, acne and chloracne, fiberglass dermatitis, pigmentary changes, and skin tumor. The approach to the patient and diagnostic criteria for occupational skin disease are described.

Occupational skin disease (OSD) is an important and costly problem within occupational medicine. Ten to 15% of all occupational illness is caused by skin disease with contact dermatitis being the cause of up to 95% of all OSD. While irritant contact dermatitis is the most frequent cause of OSD, allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is an important cause of chronic skin disease. In this chapter, various methods of protecting a worker from work-related allergy, including immediate and delayed-type hypersensitivities, are considered and reviewed. Concepts such as elimination of harmful exposures and

BACKGROUND: Tetranychus urticae is a phytophagous, macroscopic mite ubiquitous to warm climates, which causes occupational allergic symptoms in farm workers.
OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to investigate the cause and mechanisms of an otherwise "undetermined" recurrent and occupational dermatitis on the hands of farm workers and to obtain a better diagnostic profile of the urticaria that many farm workers who are allergic to T. urticae experience.
METHODS: Fifty-six farm workers with occupational cutaneous and/or respiratory symptoms and 10 healthy farm workers underwent in vivo and in v

Acrylates are a well-known cause of occupational contact dermatitis due to its widespread use in several settings such as dentistry, orthopaedic surgery, graphic industry and cosmetics. We describe the case of a manicurist who developed occupational rhinitis and allergic contact dermatitis induced by the application of acrylic-sculptured nails.
