[Clinical effectiveness and tolerance of climbazole containing dandruff shampoo in patients with seborrheic scalp eczema].

Pityrosporum ovale appears to play an important role in the pathogenesis of dandruff as a symptom of seborrheic dermatitis. Climbazole is an antimycotic agent with a high in vitro and in vivo efficacy against P. ovale. In the presented work we investigated the efficacy and safety of a climbazole 0.65% shampoo on seborrheic dermatitis of 30 volunteers. Subjects were diagnosed as having moderate to severe seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp. After a 1-week washout and a 4-week treatment the clinical evaluation showed a successful reduction of dandruff, skin redness and itching in 80% of the volun

Prospective, Open-Label, Multi-Centre, Randomized Study to Compare the Effectiveness, Safety, and Tolerability of Lulican™ Shampoo Versus Ketoconazole Shampoo in Indian Adult Patients With Mild to Moderate Scalp Seborrheic Dermatitis (LEAD Study).

Introduction Although seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is not lethal, it has a significant impact on the quality of life. Many cases of SD are managed with ketoconazole, but luliconazole has shown an equivalent or lower minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), but not many studies have been done for its efficacy and safety in SD. With this in mind, we set out to conduct a study comparing the effectiveness, safety, and tolerability of Lulican™ (luliconazole 1% + salicylic acid 3% + ZPTO 1%) shampoo and Ketoconazole (Ketoconazole 2% + ZPTO 1%) shampoo in the treatment of SD. In Vitro Anti-Malassezia Activity of Castanea crenata Shell and Oil-Soluble Glycyrrhiza Extracts.

BACKGROUND: A new shampoo with anti-Malassezia properties obtained from various plants is required to provide seborrheic dermatitis patients with a wider range of treatment options. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to obtain in vitro susceptibility profiles of Malassezia restricta and M. globosa, the most important pathogenic organisms in the development of seborrheic dermatitis, to the plant extracts used in commercial anti-dandruff shampoos. METHODS: Minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were determined for eight candidate plant extracts and two plant-derived natural products dilute

INDIVIDUAL ARTICLE: Etiology, Treatment Challenges, and the Role of Scalp and Haircare in Managing Dandruff.

Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis are associated with a disrupted scalp barrier that contributes to irritation, pruritus, and flaking of the scalp. The flaking and itch associated with dandruff can significantly impact an individual's self-esteem and quality of life. While the exact pathogenesis of dandruff is still not completely understood, scalp barrier health and its microbiome are thought to play significant roles in disease propagation. Five expert dermatologists with extensive experience in hair, dandruff, and seborrheic dermatitis were selected to participate in discussions that would

Utilization of matrix-assisted laser desorption and ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry for identification of infantile seborrheic dermatitis-causing Malassezia and incidence of culture-based cutaneous Malassezia microbiota of 1-month-old infants.

Matrix-assisted laser desorption and ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) has been utilized for identification of various microorganisms. Malassezia species, including Malassezia restricta, which is associated with seborrheic dermatitis, has been difficult to identify by traditional means. This study was performed to develop a system for identification of Malassezia species with MALDI-TOF-MS and to investigate the incidence and variety of cutaneous Malassezia microbiota of 1-month-old infants using this technique. A Malassezia species-specific MALDI-TOF-MS database was de

Scalp Infection, Inflammation, and Infestation.

Tinea capitis, folliculitis, seborrheic dermatitis, and pediculosis capitis are four common scalp conditions. Although tinea capitis and seborrheic dermatitis are found more commonly in patients with skin of color and highly textured hair, all of these conditions have special diagnostic or management considerations in these populations. This article reviews the diagnosis and management of these common scalp conditions.

The evolving role of therapeutic shampoos for targeting symptoms of inflammatory scalp disorders.

Scalp lesions are common among patients with psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis and a number of other inflammatory and fungal conditions. Topical corticosteroids are a mainstay of treatment for many scalp dermatoses and they significantly reduce erythema, scaling and pruritus. Conventional corticosteroid formulations such as cream and ointments are often difficult or time consuming for patients to apply and may produce undesirable cosmetic effects. Medicated shampoos provide a more convenient alternative for patients who require topical administration of corticosteroids for scalp conditions. Tar

Ciclopirox (Loprox) gel for superficial fungal infections.

Ciclopirox (Loprox) is a broad-spectrum antifungal medication that also has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Its main mode of action is thought to be its high affinity for trivalent cations, which inhibit essential co-factors in enzymes. Clinical trials have shown that ciclopirox gel is a successful treatment for seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp as well as for tinea pedis. Adverse effects are generally mild and include a skin-burning sensation, contact dermatitis, and pruritus. Ciclopirox is indicated in the US for the treatment of tinea pedis, tinea corporis, pityriasis versi

Effectiveness of FastFung agar in the isolation of Malassezia furfur from skin samples.

BACKGROUND: Lipophilic basidiomycetous yeasts of the Malassezia genus can cause various skin diseases, such as seborrheic dermatitis, pityriasis versicolor, folliculitis and atopic dermatitis, and even life-threatening fungemia in newborns and immunocompromised individuals. Routine mycological media used in clinical practice do not contain sufficient lipid ingredients required for the growth of Malassezia species. A recently developed medium, FastFung agar, is promising for culturing fastidious fungal species. METHODS: In this study, we compared FastFung agar and mDixon agar for culturing Mal

Papulosquamous diseases.

The papulosquamous diseases have certain common morphologic appearances which may at times lead to confusion in diagnosis. They do not have any common etiologic factor. The most common diseases in this category are psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, lichen planus, pityriasis rosea, and secondary syphilis. Exfoliative erythroderma is included here since it rarely may be a complication of a pre-existing papulosquamous disease such as psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, and lichen planus.

Incidence and prevalence of salivary gland tumours in Valparaiso, Chile.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: A simple non-invasive tape (Sebutape) adsorption method was used to recover inflammatory proteins from normal and compromised human scalp (i.e. dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis) in order to assess the inflammatory and immunologic changes relevant to these clinical conditions. METHODS: The scalps of subjects identified by a dermatologist as having either dandruff (n = 18), seborrheic dermatitis (n = 19) or normal scalp (n = 16) were visually graded to obtain total adherent scalp flaking scores (TASFS). Sebutape samples were then collected from both the high and low TASFS sca
