Effect of COVID-19-induced social isolation on mammal roadkills on the BR-101 highway in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil.

The COVID-19 pandemic's enforced social isolation significantly disrupted numerous economic activities, notably road transport. This period, dubbed "anthropause," provided a unique moment to study its effects on wildlife, specifically mammal roadkill patterns on Brazil's BR-101/North-RJ highway. This research assessed whether reduced vehicle traffic during the pandemic's first year impacted mammal roadkill rates. Monitoring was conducted monthly from March 2019 to February 2021, spanning pre-pandemic and pandemic periods, across four 10-km highway sections. Findings indicated a 45% decrease in

Enzootic transmission of Leishmania spp. in gallery forests of the Brazilian Cerrado.

Gallery forests harbor mammals and sand flies that may be involved in the transmission of Leishmania spp. parasites. Characterizing the enzootic cycles of Leishmania spp. is essential for understanding its transmission dynamics. We analyzed the presence of Leishmania spp. in mammals and sand flies in gallery forests during the dry season in the Cerrado. Four gallery forests were investigated in May and September 2014. Our capture effort included 1,280 HP trap-nights, 16 Shannon trap-nights for sand flies, and 5,120 trap-nights for mammals. After identifying the mammalian and sand fly species,

Faecal Virome Analysis of Wild Animals from Brazil.

The Brazilian Cerrado fauna shows very wide diversity and can be a potential viral reservoir. Therefore, the animal's susceptibility to some virus can serve as early warning signs of potential human virus diseases. Moreover, the wild animal virome of this biome is unknown. Based on this scenario, high-throughput sequencing contributes a robust tool for the identification of known and unknown virus species in this environment. In the present study, faeces samples from cerrado birds (Psittacara leucophthalmus, Amazona aestiva, and Sicalis flaveola) and mammals (Didelphis albiventris, Sapajus lib

Raccoon (Procyon lotor) biomarker and rabies antibody response to varying oral rabies vaccine bait densities in northwestern Pennsylvania.

Distribution of oral rabies vaccine baits has been used as a strategy for managing rabies in the United States since the 1990s. Since that time, efforts have been made to improve baiting strategies with a focus on bait density to maximize both efficiency and cost effectiveness. An optimal rabies management strategy includes a vaccine bait preferred by the target species that is distributed at the minimal density needed to achieve population immunity to prevent rabies spread. The purpose of our pilot study was to examine the effect of 75, 150, and 300 baits/km2 vaccine bait densities on rabies

Development of an automated dispenser for the delivery of medicinal or vaccine-laden baits to raccoons (Procyon lotor).

Medicinal baits are distributed to manage zoonotic diseases, including raccoon (Procyon lotor) rabies, but efficient distribution strategies are needed for suburban environments. We developed an automated dispenser that transfers fishmeal polymer baits at user-specified intervals from a magazine to a receptacle fitted with a filter that exploits raccoon dexterity to limit consumption by nontarget species. We introduce the concept of automated dispensers and describe bait removal success rates for raccoons versus nontarget species. We monitored visitation with remote cameras after deploying a d

Ecological studies of enzootic Venezuelan equine encephalitis in north-central Venezuela, 1997-1998.

From 1997-1998, we investigated the possible continuous circulation of epizootic Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE) virus suggested by a 1983 subtype IC interepizootic mosquito isolate made in Panaquire, Miranda State, Venezuela. The study area was originally covered by lowland tropical rainforest but has been converted into cacao plantations. Sentinel hamsters, small mammal trapping, mosquito collections, and human serosurveys were used to detect active or recent virus circulation. Six strains of subtype ID VEE virus were isolated from hamsters that displayed no apparent disease. Four other

A rare case of OHVIRA (obstructed hemivagina and ipsilateral renal anomaly) syndrome: Case report.

Obstructed hemivagina and ipsilateral renal anomaly syndrome (OHVIRA) also known as Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome is a rare type of Müllerian duct anomaly with concomitant mesonephric duct anomalies. It is characterized by uterus didelphys, obstructed hemi-vagina, and commonly renal agenesis however; other types of mesonephric duct anomalies such as duplicated kidneys, dysplastic kidneys, rectovesical bands, or crossed fused ectopia have also been reported. We present a case report of a 21-year-old female patient experiencing new-onset vaginal bleeding and pelvic pain over the past month.

Reconsidering the best minimally invasive approach for patients with herlyn-werner-wunderlich syndrome: Should we push the frontiers for a better outcome?

Obstructed hemivagina and ipsilateral renal agenesis (OHVIRA) syndrome is a rare congenital defect of the Mullerian ducts characterized by uterine didelphys, unilateral obstructed hemivagina, and ipsilateral renal agenesis. It frequently presents during puberty, with complications such as pelvic pain, pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility. Surgical management is the mainstay treatment. A vaginal access for septum resection is usually used. However, it can be in difficult in several situations such as a very proximal septum with a small bulge, or in the case of virgin patients with social

Johanson-Blizzard syndrome with associated urogenital anomalies.

We present a case of a child with pancreatic insufficiency and facial defects typical of Johanson-Blizzard syndrome (JBS), along with the more facultative anomalies of the JBS, such as those of the urogenital system including persistent urogenital sinus, urethral duplication and dysplastic kidneys. Fetal ultrasound in a 21-year-old G1P1 woman revealed ambiguous genitalia. Examination at birth revealed a phallic structure with urethral meatus, non-palpable gonads, two orifices in close proximity in the perineum, with the anterior being a common urogenital channel and the posterior, the rectum.

Hematometra presenting as an acute abdomen in a 13-year-old postmenarchal girl: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Most underlying diseases for abdominal pain in children are not dangerous. However some require rapid diagnosis and treatment, such as acute ovarian torsion or appendicitis. Since reaching a diagnosis can be difficult, and delayed treatment of potentially dangerous diseases might have significant consequences, exploratory laparoscopy is a diagnostic and therapeutic option for patients who have unclear and potentially hazardous abdominal diseases. Here we describe a case where the anomaly could not be identified using a laparoscopy in an adolescent girl with acute abdomen. CASE P

Complications at menarche of urogenital sinus with associated anorectal malformations.

Persistent urogenital sinus is frequently associated with a wide spectrum of complex anatomic abnormalities involving the urinary, genital, and gastrointestinal tracts. Failure to accurately define these abnormalities can result in serious complications. One such group of complications occurs relatively late in the clinical course of these children and has received little attention. These are the complications related to menarche. This report reviews the anatomy, complications, and management in five such patients. In this group the onset of menses was associated with hydrosalpinx, pyosalpinx,

Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich Syndrome: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich (HWW) syndrome is a very rare congenital malformation of the urogenital tract involving both the müllerian and the wolffian ducts, and it consists of the association of didelphys uterus, ipsilateral obstructed hemivagina, and ipsilateral kidney agenesis. Its etiology is related to the abnormal development of two embryonic structures-mesonephros and paramesonephros-although its precise mechanism is not known, but theories involving signaling molecules and gene expression are studied for potential explanations. Because of its rarity, there is limited literature on this s
