Behavioral momentum in computer-presented discriminations in individuals with severe mental retardation.

Behavioral momentum was examined in 2 individuals with severe mental retardation via within-subject manipulations of obtained reinforcer rates. Subjects performed self-paced discrimination problems presented on a touch screen computer monitor. Two different problems, Tasks A and B, alternated in blocks of 15 trials on a multiple schedule. Reinforcers were snack foods. The reinforcement schedule for Task A was continuous (fixed-ratio 1) and the schedule for Task B was continuous in some conditions and variable ratio in other conditions. Behavioral momentum was assessed in test sessions by prefe

Isobolographic analysis of chlordiazepoxide and triazolam combinations in squirrel monkeys discriminating triazolam.

RATIONALE: The discriminative stimulus (DS) effects of chlordiazepoxide (CDP) differ from those of other typical benzodiazepine (BZ) agonists in that CDP does not always occasion full substitution for a BZ agonist DS. OBJECTIVES: The present study tested the hypothesis that the unusual DS effects of CDP may result from its relatively low intrinsic efficacy by examining the combinations of CDP and triazolam using isobolographic analysis in squirrel monkeys discriminating triazolam. METHODS AND RESULTS: Squirrel monkeys were previously trained to discriminate triazolam (0.03 mg/kg, i.v.) from

Chemical determinants of the rat electro-olfactogram.

The chemical properties that determine the distribution of the electro-olfactogram were studied after exposure of a large area of the rat olfactory epithelium. Multiple electrodes were placed along the rostral border of endoturbinate IV on the midline of the nasal cavity. This array of electrodes spanned a region containing the four receptor gene expression zones described for the rat. The response to a series of odorants containing only carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen was strongly related to electrode position. For most hydrocarbons, the responses were progressively larger toward the ventral epi

Discriminative stimulus effects of ethanol: neuropharmacological characterization.

Generally, compounds discriminated by animals possess psychotropic effects in animals and humans. As with many other drugs of abuse, strength of the ethanol discriminative stimulus is dose related. The majority of studies show that doses close to 1.0 g/kg are close to the minimum at which the discrimination can be learned easily. Substitution studies suggest that anxiolytic, sedative, atactic, and myorelaxant effects of ethanol all play an important role in the formation of its intercoeptive stimulus. Low doses of ethanol produce more excitatory cues, similar to amphetamine-like subjective sti

Contrast discrimination, non-uniform patterns and change blindness.

Change blindness--our inability to detect large changes in natural scenes when saccades, blinks and other transients interrupt visual input--seems to contradict psychophysical evidence for our exquisite sensitivity to contrast changes. Can the type of effects described as 'change blindness' be observed with simple, multi-element stimuli, amenable to psychophysical analysis? Such stimuli, composed of five mixed contrast elements, elicited a striking increase in contrast increment thresholds compared to those for an isolated element. Cue presentation prior to the stimulus substantially reduced t

Discriminative-stimulus effects of clozapine in squirrel monkeys: comparison with conventional and novel antipsychotic drugs.

The effects of conventional and novel atypical antipsychotic drugs were compared to clozapine in squirrel monkeys that discriminated I.M. injections of clozapine (1.0 mg/kg) from saline in a two-lever drug discrimination procedure. Clozapine (0.03-3.0 mg/kg) produced dose-related increases in responding on the clozapine-associated lever with full substitution at the training dose in all monkeys. Dose-related increases in responding on the clozapine-associated lever and full substitution also were observed with structural analogues of clozapine including perlapine and fluperlapine (0.1-3.0 mg/k

Different uses of chromatic signals in patients with congenital and acquired colour vision deficiencies.

Chromatic signals can be used to generate perceived colour and also to detect spatially structured objects defined only by chromatic differences. These two attributes have previously been investigated in dichromats and cerebral achromatopsic patients using a new colour vision test developed at City University that makes possible the isolation of pure chromatic signals (Barbur et al. Proc. R. Soc. London B 258, 327-334, 1994). We have investigated acquired colour vision changes in a 69-year-old patient, after conventional colour vision tests gave ambiguous results. His ability to detect an obje

HAS and LAS rats respond differentially to behavioral effects of ethanol, pentobarbital, chlorpromazine and chlordiazepoxide.

The drug discrimination paradigm (DD) was used to evaluate differences in performance of rats selectively bred for differential sensitivity to the hypnotic effects of ethanol. Tenth generation high-alcohol sensitive (HAS) and low-alcohol sensitive (LAS) rats were trained to discriminate between ethanol (1.0 g/kg, IP) and saline vehicle on a VR-5 schedule of reinforcement. The HAS strain was more sensitive to the discriminative effects of ethanol than the LAS strain, but the magnitude of difference was much smaller than the differential sleep-time differences. The biphasic action of ethanol was

Differential impact of right and left hemisphere lesions on facial emotion and object imagery.

Thirty-six patients with unilateral hemispheric lesions of the right hemisphere (RHD), left hemisphere (LHD), or no neurologic disease were evaluated on two tasks of visual imagery: one involved imagery for facial emotions and the other involved imagery for common objects. As a group, the RHD patients were more impaired on the emotional than the object imagery task, whereas the LHD patients showed the opposite pattern. Individual case analyses suggested that the RHD group consisted of different behavioural subtypes. One patient with a right inferior occipito-temporal lesion had a facial emotio

Three-choice drug discrimination: phencyclidine-like stimulus effects of opioids.

To assess the commonalities and differences in the discriminative stimulus properties of phencyclidine (PCP) and psychotomimetic opioids, rats were trained to discriminate PCP (2.0 mg/kg), cyclazocine (1.0 mg/kg), and saline in a three-choice discrete-trial avoidance paradigm. Stimulus control of behavior, defined as the reliable completion of 18 trials of a 20-trial session on the appropriate choice lever after administration of PCP, cyclazocine, or saline, was established in an average of 157 sessions. In tests of stimulus generalization, SKF-10,047 and dextrorphan engendered lever choices a

[Effect of time resolution ability on selective hearing disorders].

Object of these investigations was the development and use of an audiologic test battery for the diagnostic registration of patients with problems in selective hearing because of a disturbed time resolution ability. In addition to some basic tests concerning the dynamic range and the fusion ability in binaural hearing special speech discrimination tests and psychoacoustical and electrophysiological tests on time resolution ability in monaural and binaural hearing are introduced. Compared to the results of normal hearing, patients with problems in selective hearing, especially because of presby

Thalamocortical mechanisms in odor-guided behavior. I. Effects of lesions of the mediodorsal thalamic nucleus and frontal cortex on olfactory discrimination in the rat.

The "core" subnucleus of the mediodorsal thalamic nucleus (MD) receives direct input from olfactory cortex in the rat. This part of MD projects to the frontal neocortex of the rhinal sulcus (RS), while other parts of the MD project to the anterior medial wall of the neocortex (MW). In this study, rats were tested on odor threshold, detection of specific odors, and three odor discriminations both before and after lesions of MD, MW, RS, or sham lesions. Olfactory threshold and detection ability remained unaffected by any of these lesions; however, subjects with MD and RS lesions were markedly im

Discriminative stimulus properties of benzodiazepines, barbiturates and pharmacologically related drugs; relation to some intrinsic and anticonvulsant effects.

Using a food-reinforced two-lever operant method, rats (n = 12) were trained to discriminate chlordiazepoxide (5 mg/kg, p.o.) from solvent (p.o.). With rats trained thus as subjects, generalization experiments were done with various benzodiazepines, barbiturates and related compounds, and with two neuroleptic drugs. The ability of these drugs to induce a discriminative stimulus complex similar to that induced by chlordiazepoxide, was then compared with some intrinsic and anticonvulsant effects of the same drugs. It was found that the discriminative stimulus properties of benzodiazepines, barbi

Racialized Sexual Discrimination (RSD) in Online Sexual Networking: Moving from Discourse to Measurement.

Young Black gay/bisexual men (YBGBM) are at disproportionate risk for poor health outcomes due to multilevel stressors, such as community- and individual-level discrimination. Racialized Sexual Discrimination (RSD) is an under-examined type of discrimination experienced by gay/bisexual men of color when seeking partners online. RSD may be a driving force behind sexual network restriction (which elevates YBGBM's risk for HIV infection) and may have an adverse impact on YBGBM's psychological wellbeing. Thus, adequate measurement of this phenomenon is essential. Focus groups with young gay/bisexu

Italian validation of the Symptom Rating Test (SRT) and Symptom Questionnaire (SQ).

Two self-rating scales of psychological distress, the Symptom Rating Test (SRT) and the Symptom Questionnaire (SQ), have been validated in translations in Italy. They were administered in several studies to psychiatric patients (neurotics and depressives), matched controls, and patients suffering from various organic illnesses (dermatologic disorders, hypertension, secondary amenorrhea and patients undergoing amniocentesis). The SRT and the SQ sensitively discriminated between psychiatric patients and normals, between different levels of psychological distress in several of the somatic illness

Family History of Alzheimer's Disease is Associated with Impaired Perceptual Discrimination of Novel Objects.

Early detection may be the key to developing therapies that will combat Alzheimer's disease (AD). It has been consistently demonstrated that one of the main pathologies of AD, tau, is present in the brain decades before a clinical diagnosis. Tau pathology follows a stereotypical route through the medial temporal lobe beginning in the entorhinal and perirhinal cortices. If early pathology leads to very subtle changes in behavior, it may be possible to detect these changes in subjects years before a clinical diagnosis can currently be made. We aimed to discover if cognitively normal middle-aged

The inferiority complex in paranoia readdressed: a study with the Implicit Association Test.

INTRODUCTION: It has been theorised that patients with persecutory delusions display a lack of covert self-esteem (formerly termed the 'inferiority complex'), while at the same time displaying normal or even heightened levels of explicit self-esteem. However, the empirical basis for this assumption is inconsistent. METHODS: In view of apparent shortcomings of prior studies to assess implicit self-esteem, the Implicit Association Test was utilised to readdress this theory. The Rosenberg scale served as an index of overt self-esteem. A total of 23 schizophrenic patients, 13 of whom showed curre

Investigation of psychosocial stress and DNA methylation in genes related to immune response, metabolism, and calcium signaling among African American and White middle-aged adults.

Chronic psychological stress is an environmental factor associated with chronic disease risk and health disparities. Since environmental stressors alter gene expression and physiologic responses through epigenetic mechanisms, perceived discrimination (PD), or the subjective experience of receiving negative treatment related to personal characteristics may influence DNA methylation (DNAm) of CpGs within genes linked to chronic disease. Using the Illumina 850K EPIC chip and psychosocial stress-associated discrimination scales, including the lifetime, racial, and everyday discrimination scales, w
