Intertemporal and probabilistic decision-making has been studied in psychiatry, ecology, and neuroeconomics. Because drug addicts and psycopaths often make risky decisions (e.g., drug misuse and aggression), investigation into types of impulsivity in intertemporal and probabilistic choices (delay and probability discounting) are important for psychiatric treatments. Studies in behavioral ecology proposed that delay and probability discounting are mediated by the same psychological process, because a decrease in probability of winning corresponds to an increase in delay until winning. This study's goal was to examine microstructural organization of frontal white matter in kleptomania. Ten females with DSM-IV kleptomania and 10 female controls underwent diffusion tensor imaging. Inferior frontal white matter was the a priori region of interest. Trace and fractional anisotropy (FA) were also calculated for frontal and posterior cortical regions in both subject groups. Kleptomania subjects had significantly higher mean frontal Trace, and significantly lower mean frontal FA than control subjects. Group differences remained significant when right and left frontal Trace and FA we

Compulsive disorders include a diverse group of conditions characterized by excessive thoughts or preoccupations combined with poorly controlled behaviors. They include trichotillomania, kleptomania, pathologic gambling, compulsive buying disorder, compulsive sexual behavior, and compulsive computer use. Some investigators have suggested that these conditions constitute a spectrum of disorders linked to obsessive-compulsive disorder. Others have questioned the validity of this conceptualization, and have debated the relationship between these disorders. Nevertheless, much has been learned abou

Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of pediatric mortality. One factor that appears to predict injury risk is children's overestimation of physical ability. Fifty-seven 6-year-olds judged their ability to complete basic physical tasks. Half the sample was required to wait 7 s before judging their ability; the other half was permitted to judge immediately. There were no differences in ability estimation accuracy between the 2 groups, suggesting that the institution of a forced decision latency does not increase children's ability estimation accuracy. Replicating previous work, children

Studies that have investigated the association between cholesterol levels and impulsivity are relatively few in number and have yielded equivocal results. In this study, we investigated the relationship between impulsivity, depression and serum lipids [total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and triglycerides] in a large sample (N=2051) of healthy young men who were remarkably homogeneous in terms of age, educational level, and socioeconomic conditions. Depression was assessed using the depression scale of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2, and impulsivit

Demographic patterns of gambling participation in the U.S. were examined. A national telephone survey was conducted with 2,630 representative U.S. residents aged 18 or older. The sample as weighted for analysis was 48% male, 12% black, and 11% Hispanic. Respondents were questioned on 15 types of gambling: how often they played and how much they won or lost. Eighty-two percent gambled in the past year. Lottery was the most commonly played game, while casino gambling accounted for the largest extent of gambling involvement. Men and women were equally likely to gamble in the past year, but men ga

Impulse control disorders, debilitating non-motor complications of Parkinson's disease, are linked to dopaminergic therapy and mesocorticolimbic dysfunction. This study aimed to characterize cortical sulcal depth, a sensitive morphometric index of cortical folding, and cortical thickness and subcortical volumetric alterations in Parkinson's disease patients with impulse control disorders. Sixty-eight Parkinson's disease patients (30 with impulse control disorders, 38 without impulse control disorders) and 32 healthy controls were enrolled. Regional sulcal depth, cortical thickness, and subcort

Dopamine agonist withdrawal syndrome (DAWS) results from the reduction or suspension of dopamine agonist medications; it encompasses mainly psychiatric symptoms, including suicidal behaviors. In patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), the impact of DAWS can be significant in terms of distress and disability; however, we must take this syndrome into account as a threatening condition because suicidal behaviors could be developing in the context of DAWS. Here we present a brief case of DAWS affecting a young man with PD, whom abruptly discontinued DA treatment and developed psychiatric symptoms

Brunner syndrome is a disorder characterized by intellectual disability and impulsive, aggressive behavior associated with deficient function of the monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) enzyme. These symptoms (along with particularly high serotonin levels) have been reported in patients with two missense variants in MAO-A (p.R45W and p.E446K). Herein, we report molecular simulations of the rate-limiting step of MAO-A-catalyzed serotonin degradation for these variants. We found that the R45W mutation causes a 6000-fold slowdown of enzymatic function, whereas the E446K mutation causes a 450-fold reductio

BACKGROUND: Punding is a complication of Parkinson's disease (PD) treatment and stimulant abuse that features excessive preoccupation with repetitive and/or aimless behaviors. We hypothesized that cognitive impairment and functional limitations influence how punding behaviors manifest in PD.
METHODS: We extracted data on punding, hobbyism, and cognition from the Parkinson's Progression Marker Initiative (PPMI). Punding and hobbyism were measured with the Questionnaire for Impulsive-Compulsive Disorders in Parkinson's Disease (QUIP) scale. We determined how cognition predicted punding and hobb

In Parkinson's disease, both motor and neuropsychiatric complications unfold as a consequence of both incremental striatal dopaminergic denervation and intensifying long-term dopaminergic treatment. Together, this leads to 'dopaminergic sensitization' steadily increasing motor and behavioral responses to dopaminergic medication that result in the detrimental sequalae of long-term dopaminergic treatment. We review the clinical presentations of 'dopaminergic sensitization', including rebound off and dyskinesia in the motor domain, and neuropsychiatric fluctuations and behavioral addictions with

Pagano and collaborators have recently reported lower ventral striatum D3 receptor availability in Parkinson's disease using PET scan. Our group conducted the first postmortem study of individuals with PD who had ICD and related behaviours in life and reported lower alpha-synuclein pathology and D3R levels in the nucleus accumbens of such individuals. The findings by Pagano and co-authors of low D3R binding in PD patients at baseline, when taken together with our findings of lower Lewy pathology and D3R in the nucleus accumbens, favour the hypothesis that D3R levels are downregulated because o

BACKGROUND: Impact of subthalamic deep brain stimulation (DBS) on impulse control disorders (ICD) in Parkinson's disease (PD) remains controversial.
OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to analyze the natural history of ICD between baseline and 1 year after subthalamic DBS in patients with PD and to identify predictive factors, taking into account the positions of the active contact and stimulation parameters.
METHODS: We analyzed postoperative modifications of ICD based on the multicentric, prospective Predictive Factors and Subthalamic Stimulation in Parkinson's Disease cohort. IC

RATIONALE: Impulsive aggressive behavior is associated with reduced central function of serotonin (5-HT). Although selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors can reduce such behaviors, many with history of impulsive aggression do not respond adequately to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and may require treatment with a direct 5-HT agonist.
OBJECTIVES: To test the hypothesis that pretreatment with the selective 5-HT2c agonist, lorcaserin, can reduce aggressive responding in impulsively aggressive individuals.
METHODS: Ten male and female adults were given lorcaserin (20 mg), or a matchin

Individuals with DSM-5 Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED) are often suspected of minimizing the nature of their recurrent, problematic, impulsive aggressive behavior due to the social undesirability of these behaviors. Our first study involved 400 study participants categorized as Healthy Controls (HC), Psychiatric Controls (PC) and as having IED and included the Crowne-Marlowe Social Desirability Scale (SDS), the Lie Scale from the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Revised (EPQ-R Lie), and the Readiness to Change (Anger) Questionnaire (RTC). IED study participants had lower SDS and lower E

Impulse control disorders (ICDs) in Parkinson's disease (PD) are considered dopaminergic treatment side effects. Cognitive and affective factors may increase the risk of ICD in PD. The aim is to investigate risky decision-making and associated cognitive processes in PD patients with ICDs within a four-stage conceptual framework. Relationship between ICDs and affective factors was explored. Thirteen PD patients with ICD (ICD+), 12 PD patients without ICD (ICD-), and 17 healthy controls were recruited. Overall risky decision-making and negative feedback effect were examined with the Balloon Anal

Parkinson's disease (Pd) is the second most prevalent degenerative neurological condition worldwide. Improving and sustaining quality of life is an important goal for Parkinson's patients. Key areas of focus to achieve this goal include earlier diagnosis and individualized treatment. In this review the authors discuss impulse control in Pd and examine how measures of impulse control from a response inhibition task may provide clinically useful information (a) within an objective test battery to aid earlier diagnosis of Pd and (b) in postdiagnostic Pd, to better identify individuals at risk of

Impulse-control disorders (ICDs) are becoming more commonly recognized in the Parkinson disease (PD) population. To date, there are no definitive methods of treating dopamine dysregulation syndromes in PD patients. We sought to uncover an effective treatment option for future study. We report a series of 3 PD patients with ICDs who were effectively treated with valproate. Based on these encouraging preliminary observations, future controlled clinical trials investigating the efficacy of valproate for ICDs in PD are recommended.
