PURPOSE: Apnea duration is dependent on three factors: oxygen storage, oxygen consumption, hypoxia and hypercapnia tolerance. While current literature focuses on maximal apneas to improve apnea duration, apnea trained individuals use timed-repeated submaximal apneas, called "O2 and CO2 tables". These tables claim to accommodate the body to cope with hypoxia and hypercapnia, respectively. The aim of this study was twofold. First, to investigate the determinants of maximal apnea duration in apnea novices. Second, to compare physiologic responses to maximal apneas, O2 and CO2 tables.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is a movie based on the true story of an editor-in-chief, Jean-Dominique Bauby, who had locked-in syndrome due to a cerebral infarction. He made an entire story by communication with his staff using solely eye movements. The patient's real emotions to the medical staff was presented in the movie. I would highly recommend this movie, and in this article, I explain and describe locked-in syndrome and my impressions of this movie.

In order to investigate causative factors, root cause analysis (RCA) was applied to 351 Australian compressed-gas diving fatalities from 1972-2005. Each case was described by four sequential events (trigger, disabling agent, disabling injury, cause of death) that were assessed for frequency, trends, and dive and diver characteristics. We report two Japanese male professional breath-hold divers (33 and 39 years of age) who experienced neurological disorders during repetitive dives to over 20 m of seawater. To facilitate analysis of mechanisms involved in cold water near-drowning, maximum breath-hold duration (BHD) and diving bradycardia were measured in 160 humans who were submerged in water temperatures from 0 to 35 degrees C at 5 degrees C intervals.
