RIGI, TLR7, and TLR3 Genes Were Predicted to Have Immune Response Against Avian Influenza in Indigenous Ducks.

Avian influenza is a disease with every possibility to evolve as a human-to-human pandemic arising out of frequent mutations and genetic reassortment or recombination of avian influenza (AI) virus. The greatest concern is that till date, no satisfactory medicine or vaccines are available, leading to massive culling of poultry birds, causing huge economic loss and ban on export of chicken products, which emphasizes the need to develop an alternative strategy for control of AI. In the current study, we attempt to explore the molecular mechanism of innate immune potential of ducks against avian i…

Dietary Administration of Bacillus subtilis Enhances Growth Performance, Immune Response and Disease Resistance in Cherry Valley Ducks.

Given the promising results of applying Bacillus subtilis (B.subtilis) as a probiotic in both humans and animals, the aim of this study was to systematically investigate the effects of B. subtilis on growth performance, immune response and disease resistance in Cherry Valley ducks. At 28 d post-hatch (dph), ducks fed a diet with B. subtilis weighed significantly more, had higher relative immune organ weights (e.g., bursa of Fabricius, thymus, and spleen), and exhibited greater villus heights, villus height to crypt depth ratios (duodenum and jejunum), and shallower crypt depths in the duodenum…

Comparative histopathological characteristics of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in chickens and domestic ducks in 2008 Korea.

We compared characteristic lesions occurring in chickens and domestic ducks naturally infected with H5N1 HPAI virus in April and May 2008. Infected chickens generally exhibited pale-green, watery diarrhoea, depression, neurological signs and cyanosis of wattles and combs, and infected ducks generally exhibited neurological signs and watery diarrhoea. Gross petechial or ecchymotic haemorrhage affected the heart, proventriculus, liver, muscle, fat, and pancreas in chickens, and muscle in ducks. Necrotic foci were primarily present in the pancreas of both species and in the heart of domestic duck…

Contribution of aflatoxin B1 and hepatitis B virus infection in the induction of liver tumors in ducks.

The study of two major risk factors in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma, namely persistent hepatitis virus infection and exposure to dietary aflatoxins, has been hampered by lack of an experimental system. To this end we have used a Pekin duck model to examine the effect of congenital duck hepatitis B virus (DHBV) infection and aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) exposure in the induction and development of liver cancer. AFB1 was administered to DHBV infected or noninfected ducks at two doses (0.08 and 0.02 mg/kg) by i.p. injection once a week from the third month posthatch until they were sacrific…

Identification and whole-genome sequencing of blood-brain barrier-penetrating Riemerella anatipestifer isolated from chickens and ducks.

Riemerella anatipestifer (RA) is a major cause of bacterial meningitis, which poses a serious threat to the poultry industry. To identify RA strains with a strong ability to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and analyze their genomic characteristics, a co-infection model was established using multiple RA strains with different serotypes in this study. We found that during co-infection with multiple RA strains, certain RA strains rapidly penetrated the BBB and were recovered from brain tissue as early as 0.25 h post-infection. The pioneer strains were selected to further evaluate their BBB-pe

Genetic parameters of feeding behavior traits and multi-tissue transcriptomic comparison of divergent feeding patterns in ducks.

Feeding behavior is a key factor influencing growth performance and feed efficiency in poultry, yet its complex phenotypes remain difficult to quantify accurately, limiting the application of large-scale behavioral data in genetic and molecular analyses. In this study, feeding behavior and feed efficiency-related phenotypes were recorded in 829 Tianfu Nonghua ducks using an automated feeding monitoring system integrated with radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. Genetic parameter estimation indicated that the heritability of feeding behavior traits ranged from 0.25 to 0.39. Individ…

Integrated blood transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses reveal potential biomarkers associated with residual feed intake in meat ducks.

Enhancing feed efficiency is central to improving both the economic viability and environmental sustainability of poultry production. Although previous research has documented how intestinal, hepatic, and muscular nutrient metabolism contributes to feed efficiency variation, less is known about corresponding differences in circulating blood. Residual feed intake (RFI) was measured in small-sized meat ducks from 21 to 42 days of age. From a natural population of 800 ducks, the eight individuals with the highest RFI and the eight with the lowest RFI were selected to form the low RFI (LRFI, RFI =…

Dynamic alternative polyadenylation in ovaries of Muscovy ducks across different laying stages based on full-length transcriptomics.

Alternative polyadenylation (APA) is a critical post-transcriptional regulatory mechanism, yet its role in follicular development and atresia in waterfowl remains poorly understood. To address this, we performed full-length transcriptome sequencing using Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) on ovarian tissues from Muscovy ducks (Cairina moschata) at distinct laying stages: pre-ovulation, consecutive ovulation and inconsecutive ovulation. Our analysis identified dynamically regulated APA events across these stages. Differentially used APA sites were enriched in pathways governing cell cycle regul…

Gut microbiota dysbiosis exacerbates polystyrene microplastics-induced liver inflammation via activating LPS/TLR4 signaling pathway in ducks.

Ubiquitous microplastics can bioaccumulate in organisms, resulting in detrimental health impacts, such as liver inflammation. Nonetheless, the exact mechanism by which polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) trigger liver inflammation via the gut-liver axis in ducks remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to clarify the impact of PS-MPs exposure to liver inflammation through the gut-liver axis in ducks. Our investigation indicated that exposure to PS-MPs markedly upregulated the levels of MDA and ROS in the liver tissue and enhanced the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, and…

Genetic characterization of low-pathogenic avian influenza subtypes H10N6 and H10N7 from free-grazing ducks in Thailand.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Free-grazing duck (FGD) raising is a unique domestic duck production system that is widely practiced in several Asian countries, including Thailand. FGD is a significant reservoir for influenza A viruses (IAVs). In this study, we genetically characterized IAV-H10N6 and IAV-H10N7 isolated from avian influenza surveillance in FGDs in Thailand. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We collected 640 swab samples from 29 FGD flocks located in 6 provinces of Thailand. IAVs were isolated from swab samples using egg inoculation. Hemagglutination test-positive samples were then subjected to IAV d

Consistent changes in muscle phenotype and mitochondrial abundance underlie dive performance across multiple lineages of diving ducks.

Diving animals must sustain high muscle activity with finite oxygen (O2) to forage underwater. Studies have shown that some diving mammals exhibit changes in the metabolic phenotype of locomotory muscles compared with non-divers, but the pervasiveness of such changes across diving animals is unclear, particularly among diving birds. Here, we examined whether changes in muscle phenotype and mitochondrial abundance are associated with dive capacity across 17 species of ducks from three distinct evolutionary clades (tribes) in the subfamily Anatinae: the longest diving sea ducks, the mid-tier div…
