Clostridium botulinum type B was detected by multiplex PCR in the intestinal contents of a suddenly deceased 11-week-old infant and in vacuum cleaner dust from the patient's household. C. botulinum was also isolated from the deceased infant's intestinal contents and from the household dust. The genetic similarity of the two isolates was demonstrated by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and randomly amplified polymorphic DNA analysis, thereby confirming that dust may act as a vehicle for infant botulism that results in sudden death.

The authors obtained new concepts on immune and biochemical response conditioned by character and circumstances of combined biologic and chemical agents. We attempted to detect Coxiella burnetii in dust samples collected from a barn housing dairy cattle by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method. Ten dust samples (five from ventilation fans and five from crossbeams) were collected from two areas in a barn on a farm near Sapporo, Hokkaido. C. burnetii was detected in 5 of the 10 dust samples. It was believed that aerial contamination by C. burnetii occurred in the barn.

Rush immunotherapy (RIT) with house dust extract was given to 15 patients with mild extrinsic or mixed asthma. Every patient was strongly positive for IgE on the radioimmunosorbent test and sensitive to house dust extract on the scratch skin test. Mukali (Aningeria robusta) is an exotic wood from the Sapotaceae family. We describe the case of a 31-year-old woman who developed bronchial asthma and contact urticaria after occupational exposure to mukali. A positive immediate response was observed in the skin prick test, bronchial challenge and the rubbing test performed with a mukali wood extract. We suggest that an IgE-mediated immunological mechanism could explain these findings. Our case report identifies another wood dust capable of inducing occupational asthma.

Seventeen victims of farmer's lung were monitored during two indoor feeding seasons for cattle.
