Elbow injuries in athletes who perform overhead throwing motions often present diagnostic challenges because of the undue stresses and often chronic, repetitive patterns of injury. Accurate and efficient assessment of the injured elbow is essential to maximize functional recovery and expedite return to play. Radiographic evaluation should be tailored to the specific injury suspected and requires a thorough understanding of normal anatomic relationships as well as familiarity with common injuries affecting these athletes.

BACKGROUND: Classic orthopaedic teaching states a high risk of pediatric acute compartment syndrome (PACS) and other adverse outcomes to be associated with pediatric floating elbow injuries. However, more recent data suggest otherwise. This study aims to evaluate treatment approaches and outcomes of pediatric floating elbow injuries and accurately determine the rate of associated PACS.
METHODS: A multicenter retrospective database was created to review patients below 18 years old who presented between 2014 and 2019 with floating elbow injuries. Patient demographics, injury characteristics, tr…

The number of injuries that force golfers to quit is also increasing. In particular, the upper body injuries are concerns for amateur golfers. This study was conducted not only to investigate muscular balance, such as ipsilateral and bilateral ratios of the upper body, but to also evaluate the possible problems of muscular joints in amateur golfers. Male golfers (n=10) and a healthy control group (n=10) were recruited for the assessment of muscular function in the upper body, which was measured by an isokinetic dynamometer at 60°/sec. The tested parts were trunk, wrist, forearm, elbow, and sho

In Monteggia fracture dislocations of the elbow, the lateral collateral ligament complex is disrupted as the radial head dislocates from the capitellum. A persistently incompetent lateral ulnar collateral ligament (LUCL) predisposes to posterolateral rotary instability of the elbow, thus restoration of the LUCL is essential for recovery. Although LUCL disruptions following elbow dislocations typically occur at the lateral humeral origin, we have identified a series of Monteggia injuries where the LUCL is avulsed from its ulnar insertion along with a fracture fragment containing the crista supi

BACKGROUND: There has been an increasing incidence of overuse elbow injuries among youth and adolescent pitchers. Pitch type has been implicated as a risk factor for excess torque at the medial elbow; however, this has not been definitively demonstrated.
PURPOSE: To assess predictors of torque across the medial elbow in youth and adolescent pitchers with a mobile sensor. In addition, the authors aimed to determine the differences in elbow torque produced according to pitch type (fastball, curveball, changeup) and pitcher demographics.
STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study.
METHODS: Twe…

Radial head (RH) arthroplasty (RHA) has emerged as a critical intervention in the management of complex elbow fractures, particularly Mason type III and IV injuries where the native RH is irreparable. Beyond its role in pain relief and joint congruity, RHA serves as a biomechanical cornerstone for restoring the lateral column and ensuring elbow stability, especially in the presence of associated ligamentous injuries or fracture-dislocations. This editorial synthesizes current evidence on RHA in Mason type III and IV RH fractures, with attention to biomechanical rationale, implant design, and c

BACKGROUND: "Floating forearm" injuries, perilunate injuries, with an elbow dislocation, are rare and challenging to treat.
METHODS: We present the case of an unusual variant of a floating forearm injury, trans-scaphoid perilunate fracture dislocation and elbow dislocation, with a concomitant open both-bone forearm fracture after a fall from a ladder. Treatment involved irrigation and debridement of the forearm wound, open reduction and internal fixation of the forearm and perilunate injury, and closed reduction of the elbow.
RESULTS: At final follow-up, he had returned to his previous occup

BACKGROUND: The combination of an elbow dislocation, a radial head fracture, and a coronoid process fracture is known as "terrible triad" injury of the elbow. This injury is one of the most challenging injuries of the musculoskeletal system and almost always causes instability of the elbow. The use of an adjuvant hinged external fixator in such injuries is still debated.
CASE PRESENTATION: In this case report we present a case of radial nerve palsy after setting up an adjuvant hinged external fixator in a complex fracture-dislocation of the elbow. The patient was a 39-year-old white man. A re

Diagnosis and treatment of injuries to the elbow joint place high demands on the treating physicians. The complex anatomy of the elbow joint enables a wide range of movement and complex functions in everyday and professional life. These must be restored in the event of injury.Clinical and imaging-based diagnostic procedures serve to classify typical injuries of this joint according to a large variety of different pathologies. These include fractures of the distal humerus, the proximal ulna, and the radial head, as well as dislocations and dislocation fractures. The following article gives an ov

Elbow disorders in the athletic population comprise a wide range of injuries from acute trauma to those caused by chronic overuse of the joint. Certain injuries are orthopedic emergencies that must be recognized immediately by the team physician to avoid potential complications. Other overuse injuries need to be accurately diagnosed and treated so further injury can be prevented and the athlete can return to competition as expediently as possible. Finally, the decision to refer an athlete for surgical treatment often rests with the team physician; only with an adequate understanding of the elb

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Injuries frequently occur in competitive wrestling, with the elbow joint representing about 25% of all injuries. Specific to the elbow, the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) can be injured traumatically from takedowns in wrestling. In athletes with complete UCL tears, surgical management is often recommended with nonoperative management resulting in less favorable outcomes. The purpose of this case report is to present a nonoperative criterion-based rehabilitation program for a high school wrestler with a complete UCL tear of the elbow.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 17-year-old ma

INTRODUCTION: Injuries around the elbow can cause medial, lateral, or combined mediolateral instability. Surgical intervention is often required in cases of lateral instability, with lateral ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction being the preferred treatment. Medial instability is frequently seen in sports involving throwing, such as baseball and American football. In elite athletes, ligament reconstruction is preferred over conservative treatment or ligament repair to facilitate a faster return to professional sports. Combined medial and lateral ligament injuries are rare but need early re

INTRODUCTION: Complete avulsion of the common extensor origin of the elbow is a very rare injury which significantly weakens upper limb function. The restoration of the extensor origin is indispensable to the function of the elbow. There are very few reports of such injuries and their reconstruction.
CASE REPORT: We present a case report of a 57-year-old male who presented with pain and swelling of elbow with inability to lift objects for 3 weeks. We diagnosed a complete common extensor origin rupture due to prior degeneration after corticosteroid injection for tennis elbow. The patient under

BACKGROUND: The results of elbow dislocations with associated radial head and coronoid fractures are often poor because of recurrent instability and stiffness from prolonged immobilization. We managed these injuries with a standard surgical protocol, postulating that early intervention, stable fixation, and repair would provide sufficient stability to allow motion at seven to ten days postoperatively and enhance functional outcome.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the results of this treatment performed, at two university-affiliated teaching hospitals, in thirty-six consecutive patients (
