The Oral HIV/AIDS Research Alliance: updated case definitions of oral disease endpoints.

The Oral HIV/AIDS Research Alliance (OHARA) is part of the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG), the largest HIV clinical trials organization in the world. Its main objective is to investigate oral complications associated with HIV/AIDS as the epidemic is evolving, in particular, the effects of antiretrovirals on oral mucosal lesion development and associated fungal and viral pathogens. The OHARA infrastructure comprises: the Epidemiologic Research Unit (at the University of California San Francisco), the Medical Mycology Unit (at Case Western Reserve University) and the Virology/Specimen Banking

Exposure-response relationship in the hand-arm vibration syndrome: an overview of current epidemiology research.

The complex of vascular, neurologic, and osteoarticular disorders occurring in the upper limbs of vibration-exposed workers is called hand-arm vibration syndrome. There is epidemiologic evidence for an increased occurrence of peripheral sensorineural disorders in occupational groups working with vibrating tools. An excess risk for wrist osteoarthrosis and for elbow arthrosis and osteophytosis has been reported in workers exposed to shocks and low-frequency vibration of high magnitude from percussive tools. However, there are too few epidemiology data to enable reliable conclusions to be drawn

The epidemiology of injury among surfers, kite surfers and personal watercraft riders: wind and waves.

The objective of this review was to summarize the epidemiological literature for surfboard riding (surfing), kite surfing and personal watercraft (PWC) riding injuries and describe the incidence and nature of these injuries, common risk factors, and strategies for prevention. The databases searched for relevant publications included Medline, ScienceDirect, ProQuest International, PubMed, Academic Search Premier as well as Google Scholar to identify additional, non-indexed studies. Overall, there was a lack of good quality descriptive studies for these three sports and many of the studies revie

From Oral Health to Obstetric Outcomes: A Comprehensive Review of Periodontal Disease and Its Implications for Preeclampsia.

Periodontal disease and preeclampsia (PE) are both significant health concerns with implications for maternal and fetal well-being. Emerging evidence suggests a potential association between these two conditions, prompting increased interest in understanding their relationship and clinical implications. This comprehensive review examines the current literature on periodontal disease and PE, focusing on epidemiological evidence, proposed mechanistic pathways, and clinical implications. Epidemiological studies consistently demonstrate an increased risk of PE among pregnant individuals with perio

Fallacies of international and national comparisons of disease occurrence in the epidemiology of neural tube defects.

Despite extensive research, little progress has been made in elucidating the etiologies of anencephalus and spina bifida. International and national distributions of disease occurrence have often been used as a basis for generating etiological hypotheses (e.g., potato blight, tea consumption, and zinc deficiency hypotheses). However, few of the epidemiological studies of neural tube defects (NTDs) have been conducted with scientific rigor in design, and most are of dubious validity, often with low precision in the estimates. This paper shows that the accepted geographic patterns of NTDs may be

A comparison of quasi-experimental methods with data before and after an intervention: an introduction for epidemiologists and a simulation study.

BACKGROUND: As the interest in and use of quasi-experimental methods to evaluate impacts of health policies have dramatically increased in the epidemiological literature, we set out this study to (i) systematically compare several quasi-experimental methods that use data before and after an intervention and contrast their performance within a simulation framework while providing a brief overview of the methods; and (ii) discuss challenges that could arise from using these methods as well as directions for future research in the context of epidemiological applications. METHODS: We considered s

Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Southeast Asian Americans: Epidemiologic Trends, Screening Challenges, and Policy Implications.

Background: Southeast Asian Americans (SEAAs) experience a disproportionately high burden of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), with incidence in several subgroups (i.e., Cambodian, Laotian, and Vietnamese individuals) reaching up to nine times that of non-Hispanic Whites. HCC in SEAAs is largely driven by chronic hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis C (HCV), metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), and alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD). Despite established screening guidelines, under-detection and delayed diagnosis remain common. Objective: To summarize epidemiologic patter

Bisphenol S and female reproductive toxicity: a scoping review of human studies.

BACKGROUND: Bisphenol S (BPS) is a chemical analogue of Bisphenol A (BPA) used in the production of hard plastics, textiles, and thermal papers. As the use of BPA has declined, BPS human exposure has increased and is now widespread. BPS has endocrine-disrupting properties and growing evidence indicates BPS negatively impacts female reproductive health. OBJECTIVE: We conducted a scoping review of primary research articles related to BPS exposure and female reproductive toxicity in humans. METHODS: We searched five biomedical databases through January 2025 for studies that assessed the effects

A scoping review on the impact of ambient temperature on human infertility.

Ambient temperature is a well-known environmental factor affecting gamete production in mammals. Despite a growing interest in biological mechanisms and epidemiologic studies for ambient temperature and human reproductive outcomes, systematic evidence synthesis is limited. Mapping human infertility outcomes in relation to ambient temperature is important to inform public health and identify research gaps. This scoping review systematically searched (n = 21,332) and included eligible epidemiologic studies (n = 135) on temperature and fertility in human populations to identify the types of tempe

Long-term impact of serious neonatal bacterial infections on neurodevelopment.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal bacterial infections have long been recognized as an important cause of acute morbidity and mortality, but long-term neurodevelopmental consequences have not been comprehensively described and discussed. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to summarize evidence on the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and epidemiology of long-term sequelae after neonatal bacterial sepsis and meningitis. We also discuss approaches for future studies to quantify the public health impact of neonatal infection-associated neurodevelopmental impairment. SOURCES: We identified studies, both research articles and revie

Systematic Literature Review on the Incidence and Prevalence of Heart Failure in Children and Adolescents.

While the epidemiology of adult heart failure has been extensively researched, this systematic review addresses the less well characterized incidence and prevalence of pediatric HF. The search strategy used Cochrane methodology and identified 83 unique studies for inclusion. Studies were categorized according to whether the HF diagnosis was reported as primary (n = 10); associated with other cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) (n = 49); or associated with non-CVDs (n = 24). A narrative synthesis of the evidence is presented. For primary HF, the incidence ranged from 0.87/100,000 (UK and Ireland) to

IUD--related uterine perforation: an epidemiologic analysis of a rare event using an international dataset.

An international dataset of 21,610 IUD insertions revealed 41 uterine perforations occurring at the time of, or subsequent to, insertion. Dat were collected on standard forms. Perforations were classified as confirmed, probable, or possible, based on the clinician's judgement and subsequent management. The uterine perforation rate was estimated as between 1.9 and 3.6/1000 insertions. 13 of the total 41 perforations were reported from 2 of 72 cooperating clinics. In 1 clinic, this center-clustering phenomenon suggested an effect of a high risk device. In the other clinic, the effect of insertor
