Effect of nutrition education on hemoglobin level of pregnant women in Southeast Ethiopia: a cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Maternal hemoglobin (Hgb) is considered an essential, modifiable risk factor for adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs). Evidence for the effect of nutrition education on the Hgb levels of pregnant women in low-income countries, including Ethiopia, is inconclusive. This study aimed to assess the effect of nutrition education on the Hgb levels of pregnant women in urban settings in the Bale Zone, Southeast Ethiopia. METHODS: A community-based two-arm parallel cluster randomized controlled trial was carried out among 447 randomly selected pregnant women attending antenatal care (224 inte

Development and Economic Evaluation of a Patient-Centered Care Model for Children With Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy: Protocol for a Quasi-Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a rare progressive muscular disease that primarily affects boys. A lack of comprehensive care for patients living with DMD is directly associated with a compromised quality of life (QoL) for those affected and their caregivers. This disease also has a huge economic impact on families as its treatment requires substantial direct, indirect, and informal care costs. OBJECTIVE: This study presents a protocol developed to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of a patient-centered care (PCC) model for children with DMD. The care model was designed w

Adherence to the Age-Friendly Care 4Ms Framework and Association with Reduced Acute Care Utilization.

The Age-Friendly Health Systems (AFHS) initiative emphasizes delivery of patient-centered, goal-concordant care for older adults through implementation of the Assess and Act-On care components of the 4Ms (What Matters Most, Medication, Mentation, and Mobility) framework. Despite broad adoption, there remains limited empirical evidence linking comprehensive, encounter-level adherence to 4Ms care with meaningful clinical and utilization outcomes. This retrospective study - designed through a multisite collaboration - evaluates the implementation of a standardized, informatics-driven approach to

Stillbirth incidence and determinants in a tertiary health facility in the Volta Region of Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Stillbirths are indicators of the quality of obstetrics care in health systems. Stillbirth rates and their associating factors vary by socio-economic and geographical settings. Published data on stillbirths and their associating factors in the Volta Region of Ghana are limited. This limits understanding of local factors that must be considered in designing appropriate interventions to mitigate the occurrence of stillbirths. This study determined the incidence of stillbirths and associated factors among deliveries at Ho Teaching Hospital (HTH) and contributes to understanding the co

Sexually transmitted infection screening to prevent adverse birth and newborn outcomes: study protocol for a randomized-controlled hybrid-effectiveness trial.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) during pregnancy are associated with adverse birth outcomes, including preterm birth, low birth weight, perinatal death, and congenital infections such as increased mother-to-child HIV transmission. Prevalence of STIs among pregnant women in South Africa remains high, with most women being asymptomatic for their infection(s). Unfortunately, most STIs remain undetected and untreated due to standard practice syndromic management in accordance with World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. Although lab-based and point-of-care molecular tests ar

Determinants of patient delay in seeking care for worsening heart failure symptoms in out-of-hospital settings: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Worsening heart failure (HF) is common and associated with rehospitalisation, premature death, poor quality of life and high healthcare costs. Patients frequently delay seeking medical care for hours or days after symptom escalation, and longer delays are linked to more severe clinical status at presentation and worse outcomes. Existing quantitative and qualitative studies have explored multiple potential determinants of patient delay, but findings remain fragmented and inconsistent, partly due to differing sets of candidate predictors and variation in populations and healthcare

The effect of a parental preparation video (Take5) on child and parent anxiety during anaesthetic induction: a protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Children undergoing anaesthetic induction experience peri-operative anxiety associated with negative outcomes including emergence delirium, short- and long-term maladaptive behaviour and increased postoperative analgesic requirements. This stems from children's limited ability to communicate, cope, and regulate intense emotions, leading to high dependency on parental emotional regulation. Previous interventions including video modelling, education and distraction techniques before and during anaesthetic induction have demonstrated significant reduction of anxiety levels. No existin
