Successful control of scleritis caused by Nocardia farcinica: A case report.

RATIONALE: Nocardia farcinica is an opportunistic pathogen that rarely causes ocular infections. This study reviewed a case of N. farcinica-mediated scleritis involving the corneal limbus. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 56-year-old man was admitted to the Department of Keratology of Jinan Second People's Hospital due to "a red and swollen right eye accompanied with severe pain for >1 month." He denied any history of hypertension, diabetes, systemic immune diseases and eye surgery. DIAGNOSES: Corneal defect and scleral necrosis were observed by slit lamp. Combination of anterior segment optical coherenc

Moxifloxacin releasing intraocular implant based on a cross-linked hyaluronic acid membrane.

Intraocular antibiotic delivery is an important technique to prevent bacterial infection after ophthalmic surgery, such as cataract surgery. Conventional drug delivery methods, such as antibiotic eye drops, have limitations for intraocular drug delivery due to the intrinsic barrier effect of the cornea. Therefore, frequent instillation of antibiotic eyedrops is necessary to reach a sufficient bactericidal concentration inside the eye. In this study, an intraocular implant, MXF-HA, that combines hyaluronic acid (HA) and moxifloxacin (MXF) was developed to increase the efficiency of intraocular

Acanthamoeba Keratitis and Acanthamoeba Conjunctivitis: A Case Report.

Acanthamoeba species are vision-threatening agents by causing cornea infections known as Acanthamoeba keratitis. A 5 year-old kid with the complaints of erythema, eyelid edema, inflammation, limitation of eye movements in the right eye, and having no history of wearing contact lenses or trauma, was diagnosed of Acanthamoeba conjunctivitis through laboratory examinations in the Ophthalmology clinic. The visual sharpness of the patient improved after the treatment. A 44 year-old female patient suffering from pain, stinging, irritation, and inability to see in the left eye with the history of wea

A new promising candidate to overcome drug resistant herpes simplex virus infections.

Infections with Herpes simplex viruses (HSV) belong to the most common human diseases worldwide, resulting in symptoms ranging from painful, but commonly self-limiting lesions of the orofacial or genital tract to severe infections of the eye or life-threatening generalized infections. Frequent HSV-reactivations at the eye may lead to the development of herpetic stromal keratitis, which is one of the major causes of infectious blindness in developed countries. The vast majority of life-threatening generalized infections occur in immunocompromised individuals, such as transplant recipients or pa

Eye-tracking to observe compliance with hand hygiene in the intensive care unit: a randomized feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare-associated infections are associated with increased patient mortality. Hand hygiene is the most effective method to reduce these infections. Despite simplification of this easy intervention, compliance with hand disinfection remains low. Current assessment of hand hygiene is mainly based on observation by hygiene specialists. The aim of this study was to investigate additional benefits of eye-tracking during the analysis of hand hygiene compliance of healthcare professionals in the intensive care unit. METHODS: In a simulated, randomized crossover study conducted at the

[Ophthalmologic manifestations of AIDS in an African milieu. Report of 45 cases].

Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is a pathological entity whose agent is a virus called HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus). The principal immunological deficit is the insufficience of immunity in mediation cell. Actually AIDS can be considered as the "bubonic plague" of the 20th century. Eye lesions caused by AIDS could present in 54 to 94% of patients of AIDS (3,19). Eye symptoms can be classified into four main categories or groups: retinal vascular lesions, eye opportunist infections, neoplasms of the eye surface and the orbit and finally neuro-ophthalmological anomalies. This stu

Pathology of brain and eye in the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). A comparison of lesions in a consecutive autopsy material.

During the years 1984-1987, a consecutive Danish autopsy material of 43 AIDS cases was analysed in order to investigate a possible coincidence of pathological changes in brain and eye. In the brain, nodular gliosis/encephalitis was most frequent, followed by cytomegalovirus infection, which occurred twice as frequently as toxoplasmic infection and four times as frequently as fungal infection. In the eye, cytomegalovirus infection was most frequent and the only opportunistic infection, followed by retinal gliosis and cytoid body lesion. Malignant lymphoma was present in the brain in three patie

An ocular model of adenovirus type 5 infection in the NZ rabbit.

Ocular adenoviral infections occur worldwide, and currently, there is no ocular animal model for evaluating new antivirals or studying pathogenesis. With a paired-eye design, an ocular model was developed in 32 New Zealand rabbits following topical and intrastromal inoculation with a clinical isolate of adenovirus type 5 (Ad5 McEwen). Clinical signs of infection--conjunctivitis, corneal edema, subepithelial infiltrates, and iritis--and seroconversion were evaluated. Replicating virus on the ocular surface was determined by serial ocular titers. Reproducible acute ocular infection was demonstra

Ocular lesions associated with attachment of the copepod Ommatokoita elongata (Lernaeopodidae: Siphonostomatoida) to corneas of Pacific sleeper sharks Somniosus pacificus captured off Alaska in Prince William Sound.

Twenty eyes from 10 Pacific sleeper sharks Somniosus pacificus, infected with the copepod Ommatokoita elongata, were collected in Prince William Sound, Alaska, and the eyes of an additional 18 S. pacificus captured in the same area were inspected for copepods. Prevalence of infection by adult female O. elongata was 97% (n = 28); mean intensity of infection was 1.89 (+/-1SD = 0.32) adult female copepods per infected shark and 1.0 (+/- 1SD = 0.0) adult female copepods per infected eye. Five of the 20 collected eyes were infected by O. elongata chalimi, and 9 of 20 eyes had 1 to several remnants

Pseudomonas aeruginosa blepharoconjunctivitis during cytoreductive chemotherapy in a woman with acute lymphocytic leukemia.

Patients undergoing chemotherapy regimens for hematologic malignancies are prone to develop unusual and potentially life-threatening infections during periods of leukopenia- induced immunosuppression. We report the case of a woman who received consolidation chemotherapy for acute lymphocytic leukemia and acquired necrotizing Pseudomonas aeruginosa blepharoconjunctivitis of the right eye during a period of mild leukopenia. The infection led to severe orbital and periorbital inflammation, spreading down to the neck. High-dose antibiotic treatment with ceftazidime and tobramycin combined with gra

Endogenous dissemination of genital Herpesvirus hominis type 2 to the eye.

A 33-year-old man developed Herpesvirus hominis type 2 (HVH-2) eye disease following a herpetic lesion of the penis. The sequence of ocular involvement suggested that the virus had been transmitted endogenously from the genital lesion: granulomatous iritis was followed by interstitial keratitis and then by dendritic keratitis. Recurrent bacterial ulcers ultimately required a conjunctival flap. The course of this man's ocular disease as well as those of other reported cases of HVH-2 adult eye infections appeared to be more severe and prolonged than that of the average patient with ocular herpes…

Aetiology of suppurative corneal ulcers in Ghana and south India, and epidemiology of fungal keratitis.

BACKGROUND: A multicentre study was carried out in Ghana and southern India to determine the aetiology of suppurative keratitis in two regions located at similar tropical latitudes. Studies of fungal keratitis from the literature were reviewed. METHODS: Patients presenting at rural and urban eye units with suspected microbial keratitis were recruited to the study. Corneal ulceration was defined as loss of corneal epithelium with clinical evidence of infection with or without hypopyon. Microscopy and culture were performed on all corneal specimens obtained. RESULTS: 1090 patients were recruit

Pneumonitis following inclusion blennorrhea.

A pregnant woman and her husband had proved chlamydial genital tract infections. She gave birth to a male infant who developed inclusion blennorrhea (inclusion conjunctivitis of the newborn infant). While on topical chemotherapy for his eye disease, the infant developed pneumonitis. Chlamydiae were recovered from his sputum at a time when conjunctival specimens were sterile. This finding raises the possibility that the agent of inclusion conjunctivitis may cause systemic infections in neonates exposed during passage through an infected birth canal.

Sterile Basics of Compounding: Methods of Sterilization and Depyrogenation.

Many pharmaceutical products are injected into the body or applied to compromised areas. If a product containing microorganisms is introduced into or applied to the body, severe infections may result. Such infections could result in the loss of an organ (e.g., an eye) or a limb, or even result in death. Consequently, certain pharmaceutical preparations must be sterile and contain preservatives to maintain their sterility. Parenteral medications must also be free of pyrogens and have endotoxin levels within allowable limits.

[Human chlamydial infections (author's transl)].

Due either to Chlamydia psittaci or to Chlamydia trachomatis, Chlamydial infections are transmitted to man directly or indirectly via birds or mammals. Directly transmitted chlamydial infections may be located in the eye (trachoma, inclusion body conjunctivitis), the urogenital tract (above all urethritis but other sites are possible) or in the ENT or respiratory systems (giving rise in particular to atypical pneumonias). Reiter's syndrome (urethritis, conjunctivitis, polyarthritis, enterocolitis) and lymphogmauloma venereum are two more examples. Combinations of them are not rare. Indirectly

Ocular cytomegalovirus latency exacerbates the development of choroidal neovascularization.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a complex, multifactorial, progressive disease which represents a leading cause of irreversible visual impairment and blindness in older individuals. Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), which infects 50-80% of humans, is usually acquired during early life and persists in a latent state for the life of the individual. In view of its previously described pro-angiogenic properties, we hypothesized that cytomegalovirus might be a novel risk factor for progression to an advanced form, neovascular AMD, which is characterized by choroidal neovascularization (CNV).

Harnessing medicinal maggot excretions/secretions for the ocular surface: A mini review.

Ophthalmology could significantly benefit from the therapeutic potential of medicinal maggots, which have been extensively utilized in dermatology for wound healing and infection management. This article reviews the evidence supporting the potential translation of maggot excretions/secretions (ES) for treating ocular surface wounds and infections. It examines the challenges associated with treating ocular surface wounds and infections, the established role of medicinal maggots in chronic skin wound care, and the composition and biological properties of maggot ES. Furthermore, recent research o

The globe: infection, inflammation, and systemic disease.

Infection, inflammation, and systemic diseases affecting the globe encompass a broad range of pathologies which may ultimately lead to progressive vision loss. Clinical symptomatology varies from the inexorably silent progressive visual loss to an acute presentation of ocular pain and/or red eye. Most are diagnosed by clinical ophthalmologic examination with selective use of ultrasound, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging for confirmation of the diagnosis, assessment of disease extent, and signs of associated systemic disease. Knowledge of the differential diagnoses of vision l
