Anti-Demodex Effect of Commercial Eyelid Hygiene Products.

PURPOSE: To investigate in vitro effects of active ingredients in eye cleansing wipes and solutions on the life span of Demodex. METHODS: Demodex mites were extracted by eyelash epilation method from volunteers who were found to have chronic demodex blepharitis during an ophthalmological examination. Preparations with three or more motile, live adult Demodex parasites were included in the study. Two drops of the test solution were dropped on the samples: saline, 2% tea tree oil (TTO; Osto®, AKD Medical products, Turkey), 7.5% TTO (Blefaritto®, Jeomed, Turkey), and 0.5% terpinen-4-ol (T4O; Ble

Maximising trichiasis surgery success (MTSS) trial: rationale and design of a randomised controlled trial to improve trachomatous trichiasis surgical outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Trachomatous trichiasis (TT) is a condition in which the eyelid turns inward and eyelashes abrade the front part of the eye. To prevent eventual blindness, surgery is recommended. Two surgical procedures are commonly used, bilamellar tarsal rotation (BLTR) and posterior lamellar tarsal rotation (PLTR). Evidence suggests that incision height and surgery type may affect the risk of postoperative TT (PTT) and other surgical outcomes. However, these studies have not prospectively compared the impact of incision height on surgical outcomes. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Maximising trichiasis…

Successful treatment of distichiasis in a cat using transconjunctival electrocautery.

A 2-year-old male castrated Domestic Short-haired cat presented to the Ophthalmology Service at the Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania for evaluation of chronic bilateral ocular discharge and blepharospasm. Initial ophthalmic examination revealed severe conjunctivitis and keratitis and the presence of upper eyelid distichiae bilaterally. Initial therapy for suspected feline herpesviral infection provided moderate, but not complete, resolution of the clinical signs. Over the subsequent year, the cat suffered from recurrent, severe, ulcerative keratitis in both

[The chondromucosal graft. Its use in the correction of entropion caused by tarsoconjunctival cicatrix, trichiasis and distichiasis].

The use of chondromucosal grafts is the classical treatment for reconstruction of the eyelids, whereas these grafts are less employed for correction of tarso-conjunctival scars due to either disease or surgery. The ideal nasal graft is the triangular cartilage, as its mucosa is more delicate and more adhesive than that of the septum, and it separation and positioning do not involve any problems if certain rules are followed. The technique appears attractive to us, as it is simple to perform, there is a lack of postoperative complications and it is logical (replacing a pathological tissue or a

A hairy tail in the stomach: A silent warning.

Trichotillomania is a psychiatric disorder in which one is urged to pull hairs and eyelashes out and one is urged to eat these pulled-out hairs, resulting in Rapunzel syndrome (a rare disorder where gastric trichobezoars traverse into the small intestine and can lead to intestinal obstruction). Here we present two case reports. In the First case, a 17 years old boy presented with a history of recurrent pancreatitis and microcytic anemia, while the other patient was a 16 years old female presenting with complaints of epigastric pain and non-projectile, foul-smelling vomiting associated with a l…

Topical permethrin 5% as a treatment for pediatric patients with phthiriasis palpebrarum: A case report.

Phthiriasis palpebrarum is defined as the involvement of the eyelids by the Phthirus pubis parasite. It is a pathology considered as a sexually transmitted disease, whose treatment can be challenging in some situations. We present the case of a 4-year-old patient with eyelashes severely affected by this parasite, who cooperated poorly for mechanical removal. Given this situation, we decided to prescribe a single dose of topical permethrin 5% and several applications of vaseline, repeating this treatment a week later, which led to the complete resolution of the condition. This case introduces t…

Floating-Harbor Syndrome in a Korean Patient with Short Stature and Early Puberty: A Case Report.

Floating-Harbor syndrome (FHS) is a rare autosomal dominant genetic disorder characterized by proportionately short stature, lack of expressive language, and distinctive facial features, including a large nose, long eyelashes, deeply set eyes, and a triangular face. We present a case of an 11-year-old Korean girl who was initially suspected of having Noonan-like syndrome but was later diagnosed with FHS. The patient exhibited short stature, developmental language delay, dysmorphic facial features, and early puberty. Targeted exome sequencing revealed a heterozygous mutation, c.7303C>T (p.Arg24…

Pathogenic Presentation of a Variant of Uncertain Significance in a Puerto Rican Patient With Wiedemann-Steiner Syndrome.

Wiedemann-Steiner syndrome (WDSTS) is an autosomal dominant disorder that is caused by mutations in the KMT2A gene. This case reports a two-year-old male's diagnosis of WDSTS via a heterozygous variant of uncertain significance (VUS) (c.11735G>A(p.Cys3912Tyr). The patient's phenotypic presentation was remarkable for hypertrichosis, intellectual disability, intermittent aggressive behavior, developmental delay, failure to thrive, low weight, and the distinct facial features of long eyelashes, telecanthus, corrected strabismus, down-slanting palpebral fissures, and a wide nasal bridge with a bro…

Trichotillomania: a good response to treatment with N-acetylcysteine.

Trichotillomania is considered a behavioral disorder and is characterized by the recurring habit of pulling one's hair, resulting in secondary alopecia. It affects 1% of the adult population, and 2 to 4.4% of psychiatric patients meet the diagnostic criteria. It can occur at any age and is more prevalent in adolescents and females. Its occurrence in childhood is not uncommon and tends to have a more favorable clinical course. The scalp, eyebrows and eyelashes are the most commonly affected sites. Glutamate modulating agents, such as N-acetylcysteine, have been shown to be a promising treatment…

[A patient with epilepsy, congenital alopecia and mental retardation: combination of atypical absence in waking and nocturnal partial seizure].

We report a 7-year-old girl with epilepsy, congenital alopecia, and mental retardation. She was hairless at birth. Very scanty hair, eyebrows and eyelashes appeared at 2 years of age. Developmental delay was first recognized at 6 years. Nocturnal partial seizures occurred at 4 years, and atypical absence in waking at 6 years. Electroencephalogram showed spike-waves in the centrotemporal area which increased and developed into a generalized continuous spike and wave complexes upon sleeping at the age of 7 years 1 month. Ictal electroencephalogram in atypical absence showed generalized 3 c/s spi…

EyeScrub: simplifying the management of blepharitis.

1. The cause of blepharitis is still a mystery, and, consequently, a cure for this condition does not exist. Patients suffering from blepharitis must be made to understand this and that it is a manageable condition. 2. EyeScrub provides cleansing of the eyelashes and lid margins. Good lid hygiene is crucial to controlling blepharitis. Performed daily in tandem with other simple procedures, EyeScrub removes the oily buildup under the lashes and in the lid margins which causes the eyes to become irritated and encrusted. 3. The application of EyeScrub is simple and does not damage the ocular surf…
