A rare case of hemangioma of the petrous bone is described. A 31-year-old woman suffered from right facial twitching and palsy. So she underwent a craniectomy intending microvascular decompression of the facial nerve, but no compressing vessels or tumors were found. Three years later, however, her facial fasciculation disappeared spontaneously, but facial weakness deteriorated and she began to feel vertigo. On admission, neurological examination revealed right facial palsy of the peripheral type, slight hearing disturbance, and canal palsy. Bone-window CT and T2-weighted MRI revealed a small t

A 45-year-old man presented with a pigmented lesion on his face. A clinical diagnosis of melanocytic nevus was made and the lesion was excised. Histopathologic examination showed a reticular seborrheic keratosis associated with a junctional nevus. We discuss the relation of nevocellular nevi with epidermal and adnexal tumors.

In 17 patients with Bell's palsy not treated or not responding to conservative therapy, vertical and horizontal decompressions were performed between days 7 and 10, relying primarily on the findings of neuromyography. Four patients (23.5%) recovered fully. Further 35 patients were operated after the regeneration period for absence of reinnervation signs between the 3rd to 6th months. An unusually marked and rapid improvement was noted in a 20-year-old female patient. In a 49-year-old male patient a neurinoma was found on the tympanal section of the facial nerve. Residual symptoms were signific

Spontaneous return of function after surgical excision of the seventh cranial nerve in surgery of parotid tumors is not impossible. This seems to occur through the several existing neural pathways between the fifth and seventh cranial nerves. It is probable that voluntary motor impulses by reeducation find their way from the cortex through the fifth cranial nerve to the respective muscles.

Radiation therapy is an acceptable alternative for the treatment of many malignancies of the skin. Results are gratifying, and long-term sequelae are few. In basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, radiation is often the best treatment when surgery is expected to cause excessive morbidity or mortality or require extensive reconstruction. Radiation should be considered as first-line treatment for tumors in the midfacial triangle. It is also very acceptable treatment for Kaposi's sarcoma and mycosis fungoides. Radiation can be used for melanoma, although it is not standard first-line therapy. R

Facial nerve injury is the most feared complication during parotid surgery. Intraoperative electromyographic nerve monitoring can be used to identify the facial nerve, map its course, identify surgical maneuvers detrimental to the nerve, and provide prognostic information. Data regarding outcomes with facial nerve monitoring are heterogeneous. In contrast, the incidence of permanent weakness has not been shown to be significantly affected by use of nerve monitoring. For revision surgery, studies show that monitored patients had (1) weakness that was less severe with quicker recovery and (2) sh

Abstract Introduction: Cerebral metastases are the most common form of central nervous system (CNS) tumours in adults. However, malignant neoplasm may also involve structures external to the brain, such as tissue surrounding the base of the skull, and then metastasize to the brain either by direct invasion or by spreading by the cranial nerves. CASE1: A 74 year-old man, with a past history of chronic kidney disease due to renal artery thrombosis and hypertension, was admitted in the emergency room (ER) complaining of persisting pain in the superior half of the right hemiface and frontal region

Handling of the facial nerve during surgery for parotid cancer is relevant for the patient's long-term quality of life. In about two thirds of cases, the facial nerve is not affected by the tumor. In these cases, in addition to complete tumor resection, identification and preservation of the facial nerve are important components of a successful operation. If the nerve is infiltrated by the tumor, the affected part must be resected during radical parotidectomy. When possible, primary nerve reconstruction leads to the best long-term cosmetic and functional outcomes. Individual selection of the o

BACKGROUND: Facial nerve palsy is one of the most common complications in parotid gland surgery. This report evaluates the effectiveness of applying Tumescent solution for preserving the facial nerve in parotidectomy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Prospective and descriptive clinical study on 34 patients undergoing parotidectomy with facial nerve preservation. Before skin incision, 5-10 min, we injected 100-200 ml of the Tumescent solution into the surgical area. We recorded the surgical method, tumor size, length of surgery, pathological results and facial nerve dysfunction. All patients were follow

BACKGROUND: Facial nerve schwannomas tend to be overlooked due to their mild early clinical presentation and slow progression.
AIMS/OBJECTIVES: To describe the role of facial nerve reconstruction in guiding the diagnosis and treatment strategy of facial nerve schwannoma.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Multi-plane reformation (MPR) of the facial nerve was conducted to evaluate the facial nerve lesion segments, radiological characteristics, and mastoid decompression in 13 patients.
RESULTS: Bone canal loss could be seen in lesions involving the geniculate ganglion and tympanic segment and those protru

Inverted papilloma of the middle ear is extremely rare and so far only 25 cases have been published in medical literature. It is a benign, rapidly growing tumour with higher incidence of malignancy and recurrence compared with sinonasal papillomas. The aetiology remains unknown. Typical clinical presentation includes hearing loss, otorrhoea and otalgia. Treatment is surgical radical resection of the lesion and radiotherapy in selected cases. Long-term follow-up, including MRI is recommended, due to the risk of recurrence and malignant degeneration.

BACKGROUND: Plexiform neurofibromatosis is a feature of von Recklinghausen's disease. Head and neck lesions may produce varying degrees of cosmetic and functional deformity. However, life-threatening hemorrhage into facial plexiform neurofibromas has not been previously reported.
METHOD: We report two patients with von Recklinghausen's disease who experienced massive hemorrhage into facial neurofibromas, one following a blunt injury and the other without a known initiating event.
RESULTS: Conservative management did not stop the hemorrhage into facial neurofibromas in either instance. Surgic

A case of a 33 year-old woman presenting an intrapetrous facial nerve neurinoma is reported. The neurological finding was a quickly progressive facial nerve palsy without hearing loss which the initial diagnosis was a Bell's palsy. The radiological findings showing an petrous bone erosion located at the third portion of the facial nerve gave the diagnosis. It was confirmed by CT scan and arteriography that allows a pre-operative embolisation. A one stage operation performed by a triple retromastoid, transpetrous and retroparotid approach, allowed a complete removal. The post-operative course w
