Child mental health practitioners' perspectives on providing support for families where there is intimate partner violence: navigating complex family relationships and fear at home.

BACKGROUND: Children who experience and are victims of intimate partner violence (IPV) between their parents or carers are at greater risk of mental health problems and are more likely to use mental health services. Prevalence studies suggest that between 10 and 35 % of children attending children and young people's mental health services (CYPMHS) have experienced parental IPV. Despite forming a considerable proportion of practitioner caseloads, we have limited knowledge of CYPMHS practitioner perspectives on working with children who have experienced parental IPV. OBJECTIVE: To understand th

The adoption and implementation of an evidence based practice in child and family mental health services organizations: a pilot study of functional family therapy in New York State.

Numerous challenges persist in providing evidence-based treatments to children and families in community-based settings. Functional Family Therapy (FFT), one such evidence-based treatment, is a family prevention and intervention program for adolescents with conduct disorder or oppositional defiant disorder. This paper presents pilot data in support of a conceptual framework explaining the adoption and implementation of FFT in a small sample of family and child mental health services organizations in New York State. The conceptual framework is grounded in the diffusion of innovations and the or

Family and community positive childhood experiences and mental health from childhood to adolescence: Independent and cumulative associations.

Childhood mental and behavioral health problems have increased in recent years in the United States, yet limited research has examined how positive childhood experiences (PCEs) across family and community contexts are associated with mental health across development. Using data from 68,000 children aged 6-17 years in the 2022-2023 National Survey of Children's Health, this study assessed whether Family- and community-level PCEs were independently and cumulatively associated with depression, anxiety, and behavioral problems. Family and community PCEs were categorized as low, moderate, or high.

Spatial distribution of intimate partner violence in Jordan: results from the 2023 Population and Family Health Survey.

BACKGROUND: Public health burden and human rights violations converge in intimate partner violence (IPV), reflecting sociocultural inequalities that deny women their basic right to safety. METHODS: A secondary analysis of data from the 2023 Jordan Population and Family Health Survey (JPFHS) was conducted to analyze the geographic distribution of IPV in Jordan. RESULTS: IPV proportions varied from 0 to 100% at the cluster/enumeration area (EA) level. Using inverse distance conceptualization, Moran's I results (Index value: 0.051927; Z-score: 9.041519; p < 0.001) showed statistically significa…

Family polyvictimization in households with parental health conditions: a cross-sectional study of disparities and risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Families with parents with health conditions often experience socioeconomic hardship, caregiving strain, and elevated exposure to family violence. However, differences in family polyvictimization (FPV) between these families and those without health conditions remain underexplored. This study examined disparities in FPV exposure and associated family-level risk factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional household survey was conducted with 1,400 Hong Kong families with children under 18. Measures included FPV (FPV Screen), social support (MSPSS), family hierarchy (PRP), health (SF-12v2, P

Exploring Factors Associated with Adolescent Tuberculosis in India: Evidence from the National Family Health Survey (2019-21).

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) in adolescents is distinct from both childhood and adult TB, particularly in terms of risk factors; however, national-level data assessing these factors in adolescents remain limited despite growing attention to the issue. This study aims to identify factors associated with TB among individuals aged 10 to 18 years. METHODS: This study leverages data from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) conducted in India during the year 2019-2021. A total of 479,674 adolescents were included. We employ a generalized linear mixed-effects logistic regression model to exa…

Enhancing family caregiving through support from community health workers: A pathway towards a more integrated healthcare system.

PurposeThis commentary examines the growing burden on family caregivers in the United States and argues for the strategic integration of community health workers (CHWs) into caregiver support models as a practical, equity-centered solution.Major FindingsFamily caregivers provide the majority of long-term care in the United States, but receive limited formal support despite escalating care demands and increasing complexity. As caregiving continues shifting into community and home settings, CHWs are uniquely positioned to address this gap through care navigation, coordination, education, and cul

Family participation to enhance care and tackle health worker shortages in resource-limited hospitals: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: A growing global shortage of health workers is limiting access to health care, especially in resource-limited countries. Family participation in hospital care could enhance care while tackling health worker shortages. With the same resources, it might deliver additional and more personalised care. This review assessed the effect and safety of family participation interventions in the care of hospitalised adults in resource-limited settings and, ultimately, if it is a viable strategy to tackle health worker shortages. METHODS: For this systematic review, Medline, Embase, CINAHL and

Family dysfunction and cognitive decline in aging: the "Health, Wellbeing, and Aging" (SABE) longitudinal population-based study.

UNLABELLED: Stress during aging is not uncommon and dysfunctional family relationships are important sources of stress in the elderly. Considering the potential stressor that family dysfunction represents, it is questioned whether prolonged exposure to dysfunctional family arrangements can contribute to cognitive decline in aging. OBJECTIVE: To verify whether family dysfunction is a predictive factor of cognitive decline in aging. METHODS: Secondary study with analysis of existing data from the longitudinal, population-based study "Health, Wellbeing and Aging" (SABE). Data from 791 elderly p

Intersectional social-economic inequalities in breast cancer screening in India: analysis of the National Family Health Survey.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer incidence rates are increasing in developing countries including India. With 1.3 million new cases of cancer been diagnosed annually, breast cancer is the most common women's cancer in India. India's National Family Health Survey (NFHS-4) data 2015-2016 shows that only 9.8% of women between the ages of 15 and 49 had ever undergone breast examination (BE). Further, access to screening and treatment is unequally distributed, with inequalities by socio-economic status. It is unclear, however, if socio-economic inequalities in breast examination are similar across populat…
