Effects of safety behaviors on fear reduction during exposure.

The use of safety behaviors has been considered one of the primary maintaining mechanisms of anxiety disorders; however, evidence suggests that they are not always detrimental to treatment success (Milosevic & Radomsky, 2008). This study examined the effects of safety behaviors on behavioral, cognitive, and subjective indicators of fear during exposure for fear of spiders. A two-stage design was used to examine fear reduction and approach distance during an in vivo exposure task for participants (N=43) assigned to either a safety behavior use (SBU) or no safety behavior use (NSB) condition. Ov…

Fear-conditioned respiration and its association to cardiac reactivity.

This study aimed to investigate ventilatory correlates of conditioned fear responses. Respiratory, end-tidal carbon dioxide pressure (PetCO(2)) and heart rate changes were studied in a differential fear-conditioning paradigm. Forty-two participants viewed pictures of faces. One picture (CS+) was followed by a human scream (US) during the acquisition phase, but not in a subsequent extinction phase. Conditioning of PetCO(2) (decrease), respiratory cycle time (decrease) and inspiratory duty time (increase) was established and subsequently extinguished. When participants were clustered according t…

Impaired trace and contextual fear conditioning in aged rats.

Trace and contextual fear conditioning were evaluated in adult (3-6 months), early middle-aged (8-12 months), late middle-aged (16-20 months), and aged (24-33 months) Sprague-Dawley rats. After trace conditioning, aged animals exhibited significantly less freezing to the tone conditioned stimulus and training context. Levels of trace-cue and context conditioning were negatively correlated with age (r = -0.56 and -0.59, respectively) and positively correlated with each other (r = +0.52). Aged rats showed robust conditioning in short- and long-delay fear paradigms, suggesting that the trace inte…

Nurses' beliefs about public health emergencies: fear of abandonment.

BACKGROUND: Since the events of September 11, 2001, subsequent anthrax mailings, world political events, and natural disasters such as Hurri … 3 was used. Audiotapes were analyzed, and codes, categories, and a theme were identified. RESULTS: Fear of abandonment was the overarching theme. Nurses believed that clinical settings would be chaotic, without a clear chain of command, and with some colleagues refusing to work. Limited access to personal protective equipment, risk of infection, unman …

Hippocampus and contextual fear conditioning: recent controversies and advances.

Dorsal hippocampal (DH) lesions produce a severe deficit in recently, but not remotely, acquired contextual fear without impairing memory of discrete training stimuli, i.e., DH lesions produce an anterograde and time-limited retrograde amnesia specific to contextual memory. These data are consistent with the standard model which posits temporary involvement of the hippocampus in recent memory maintenance. However, three recent controversies apparently weaken the case for a selective mnemonic role for the hippocampus in contextual fear. First, although retrograde amnesia (from posttraining lesi…

Dyspneic-fear and catastrophic cognitions in hyperventilatory panic attacks.

The tenability of cognitive explanations of the experience of fear during panic attacks (viz. Ley's misattribution-of-symptoms hypothesis and Beck's and Clark's catastrophic-misinterpretation-of-symptoms hypotheses) is seriously questioned by findings from three independent lines of research: (a) Wolpe and Rowan's observation that catastrophic cognitions follow fear, (b) Rachman, Levitt and Lopatka's reports of panic attacks without fearful cognitions, and (c) reports of panic attacks during sleep occurring predominately during non-dreaming stages of sleep. Recognition of these findings led Le…

The effect of pain on fear of movement in the early period after open heart surgery according to the fear-avoidance model: the role of moderating factors.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pain and fear of movement are critical factors that can adversely affect recovery outcomes. The interplay among these factors can significantly influence mobilization and rehabilitation outcomes. This study aims to examine the correlation between pain and fear of mobility during the initial phase following open-heart surgery, taking into account the influence of moderating variables. METHODS: This cross-sectional and correlational study, conducted within the framework of the Fear-Avoidance Model, involved 203 patients in a Cardiovascular Surgery Intensive Care Unit. …

Birth controlling your fears: The long-term effects of adolescent exposure to hormonal contraceptives on fear extinction in long-evans female rats.

The mechanisms involved in inhibiting fear to a threatening cue can be studied in the laboratory via fear extinction, which is a process thought to underpin the development and treatment of anxiety disorders. In adult female rats, fluctuating sex hormones across the estrous cycle modulate fear extinction, and suppressing sex hormones via hormonal contraceptives (HCs) impairs fear extinction. Despite high usage of HCs during adolescence, no research has examined HC effects on extinction during this developmental phase. In the current study, adolescent female rats (postnatal day 35) were adminis…

Feasibility and Acceptability of the Fear-Less Screening and Stratified-Care Model for Fear of Cancer Recurrence Among People Affected by Early-Stage Cancer.

OBJECTIVES: Fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) is a prevalent unmet need for people affected by cancer, in the context of limited healthcare resources. Stratified-care models have potential to meet this need, while reducing resource demands. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of screening procedures and interventions within the Fear-Less stratified-care model among those impacted by early-stage cancer. METHODS: People affected by breast, head and neck, or gynaecological cancer, who had completed curative treatment, were screened for FCR. Individuals experiencing moder…

Selective Dopamine Transporter Inhibition with CE-123 Promotes Fear Extinction and Alters the Basolateral Amygdala Proteome Following Fear Extinction in Adolescent Male Rats.

Persistent fear responses and impaired fear extinction are characteristic features of stress-related disorders. Dopaminergic signalling within amygdala-centred circuits contributes to fear extinction, but the associated molecular mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we investigated whether selective dopamine transporter (DAT) inhibition with CE-123 (10 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) facilitates fear extinction and induces region-specific molecular adaptations. Adolescent male rats were subjected to a modified stress-enhanced fear learning (SEFL)-like paradigm followed by extinction training. Rats expos…

7 tesla multiscale entropy analysis reveals increased resting-state complexity in key regions for fear and anxiety in spider-fearful individuals.

Resting-state functional connectivity is limited in assessing the temporal dynamics of brain networks and, due to an insufficient signal-to-noise ratio, in detecting subtle changes at 3T MRI. Nonetheless, measures of complexity, which capitalize on temporal dynamics, have revealed alterations for some affective disorders at this field strength. Anxiety disorders have received only scant attention in this regard, despite indications of altered functional brain architecture in spider-fearful participants (SP). To address this gap, we probed resting-state complexity using 7T MRI, comparing 28 adu…

Absence of verbal recall or memory for symptom acquisition in fear and trauma exposure: a conceptual case for fear conditioning and learned nonuse in assessment and treatment.

Absence of memory or verbal recall for symptom acquisition in fear and trauma exposure, as well as absence of successful coping behavior for life events, is associated with a number of diagnoses, including traumatic brain injury, posttraumatic stress disorder, pain, and anxiety. The difficulty with diagnosis and treatment planning based on the absence of recall, memory, and successful coping behavior is threefold: (1) these assessments do not distinguish between disruption of behavior and lack of capacity, (2) the absence of verbal recall and memory complicates cognitive-based treatment, and (…

Psychometrics of a fear-avoidance measure adapted for youth with persistent postconcussive symptoms: Fear of Concussive Symptoms Questionnaire (FOCSQ) child and parent-proxy versions.

OBJECTIVE: This article aimed to examine the psychometric properties of a measure of youth fear-avoidance of concussive symptoms. METHOD: Fear-avoidance is thought to be a risk factor for prolonged concussion recovery; however, current measures of fear-avoidance focus on pain rather than broader symptoms. We adapted the Fear of Pain Questionnaire to be relevant to concussion symptoms with a new version called the Fear of Concussive Symptoms Questionnaire (FOCSQ). We assessed the psychometrics of this scale with a sample of N = 115 youth with persistent postconcussive symptoms (Mage = 15.1 yea…

Fear in general populations: A cross-sectional study on perceived fear of common diseases, COVID-19, life events, and environmental threats in 30 countries.

BACKGROUND: In this study, we assessed the general population's fears towards various diseases and events, aiming to inform public health strategies that balance health-seeking behaviours. METHODS: We surveyed adults from 30 countries across all World Health Organization (WHO) regions between July 2020 and August 2021. Participants rated their fear of 11 factors on an 11-point Likert scale. We stratified the data by age and gender and examined variations across countries and regions through multidimensional preference analysis. RESULTS: Of the 16 512 adult participants, 62.7% (n = 10 351) we…

Existential concerns and fear of recurrence or progression in people with migraine.

The current study examined the relevance and potential associations between fear of recurrence or progression (FRP) and existential concerns (i.e. death anxiety, meaninglessness, isolation, identity, and guilt) in the context of migraine. Cross-sectional survey data was obtained from 522 people with a self-reported migraine diagnosis (94% female; Mage = 42.79 years), who completed a number of online questionnaires assessing FRP, existential concerns, disability, pain, and mental health symptoms. The results revealed significant positive correlations between all five existential concern domains…
