Safety and effects of scorpion-derived antimicrobial peptides as an alternative to antibiotic growth promoters in broilers: growth performance, immune function, and intestinal development.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) derived from scorpion venom have emerged as promising environmentally sustainable feed additives due to their biosafety and ability to metabolize into natural amino acids without residues. This study investigates IsCT, a cytotoxic peptide from Isometroides scorpions, for its potential application in yellow-feathered broiler production. The study began with in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility testing against major livestock pathogens (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Salmonella typhimurium ATCC 14028, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, and Streptococcus agalactiae ATCC

Bouncing dynamics of impact droplets on bioinspired surfaces with mixed wettability and directional transport control.

Kingfishers stand on a branch, and raindrops tumble translationally from feathers during raining, enlightening functional surfaces design and liquid transport control. Far-ranging studies on oriented transportation are confined to vertical impacting, which is, to date, in-depth philosophy of horizontal droplets transport on motionless surface deems to be rather serviceable. This study, employed mixed-wettability surface inspired by kingfishers' feather, occurs on directional transportation issues, such as the synergies of wettability-controlled, driving force and transportation capability. Her…

Contrasting Spatial and Seasonal Trends of Methylmercury Exposure Pathways of Arctic Seabirds: Combination of Large-Scale Tracking and Stable Isotopic Approaches.

Despite the limited direct anthropogenic mercury (Hg) inputs in the circumpolar Arctic, elevated concentrations of methylmercury (MeHg) are accumulated in Arctic marine biota. However, the MeHg production and bioaccumulation pathways in these ecosystems have not been completely unraveled. We measured Hg concentrations and stable isotope ratios of Hg, carbon, and nitrogen in the feathers and blood of geolocator-tracked little auk Alle alle from five Arctic breeding colonies. The wide-range spatial mobility and tissue-specific Hg integration times of this planktivorous seabird allowed the explor…

The stress of not being able to perform dustbathing in laying hens.

The stress of not being able to perform dustbathing was studied in small groups of laying hens. The birds were reared and kept for 2.5 years … e birds after access to sand, whereas no changes were found in the sand birds. Stereotypic pecks on feathers were absent in the sand birds, but were frequent in most of the wire birds both before and after they were given sand. Also, in the wire birds, all feather pecking (stereotypic and nonstereotypic) was positively correlated with the concentration of …

Impact of Music as Environmental Enrichment on Chronic Stress and Anxiety-Related Responses in Broiler Chickens.

This study evaluated the effects of classical music as auditory environmental enrichment on chronic stress and anxiety-related responses in broiler chickens. Two hundred Cobb 500 chicks were assigned to a control group (no enrichment) or an enriched group exposed to classical music for 6 h daily from 1 to 40 days of age. At 40 days, affective states were assessed using the attention bias test (ABT), while chronic stress was evaluated through feather corticosterone (CORT) concentrations. Music-exposed birds had significantly lower feather CORT concentrations than controls (p < 0.0001), indicati

Unusual pathology of canary poxvirus infection associated with high mortality in young and adult breeder canaries (Serinus canaria).

Mortality in excess of 65% occurred in a flock of 450 canaries (Serinus canaria). Clinical signs in the canaries included severe respiratory distress, loss of feathers and/or scaly skin on the head, neck and back, anorexia, loss of weight and fluffed-up appearance of several days duration before death. Gross pathology in most of the canaries included thickened eye lids and small scab-like nodules on the skin of the head and neck, enlarged thymus, mild to severe consolidation of lungs and exudate in the sinuses and trachea. A few birds also had thickened air sacs and enlarged and pale spleens. …

Characterization of aortic and brachiocephalic filariasis by Filarioidea sp (Nematoda:Spirurida:Filarioidea) in Mexican ramphastids.

The manuscript presented herein documents the findings of filaria nematodes in 5 keel-billed toucans, and one emerald toucanet, originated from 2 private aviaries in Mexico City during two years. The birds displayed ruffled feathers, depression, inability to perch, convulsions, and sudden death. Furthermore, thickened wall of the aortic and brachiocephalic arteries, with connective tissue proliferation and chondroid metaplasia were observed. Molecular characterization matched Filarioidea sp (Nematoda: Spirurida: Filarioidea). To the authors' knowledge, this is the first documented report of fi…

Multi-tissue contamination (mercury, lead, and organochlorine pesticides) and health biomarkers in Northern Shoveler and Northern Pintail during wintering.

Organochlorine pesticides (OCP) and heavy metals are contaminants that threaten ecosystem health. Migratory birds can bioaccumulate these contaminants; therefore, contaminant effects should be assessed during reproductive, migratory, and wintering stages. We sampled 27 Northern Pintails (Anas acuta) and 26 Northern Shovelers (Spatula clypeata) wintering in southern Sinaloa, Mexico. We measured mercury (Hg) and lead (Pb) in breast feathers and OCPs in liver and muscle. Biomarkers included heterophil/lymphocyte ratio, genotoxicity metrics, organosomatic indices, and the condition index (CI). The…

Vection is modulated by the semantic meaning of stimuli and experimental instructions.

Vection strength is modulated by the semantic meanings of stimuli. In experiment 1--even though vection stimuli were of uniform size, color, and luminance--when they also had semantic meaning as falling objects, vection was inhibited. Specifically, stimuli perceived as feathers, petals, and leaves did not effectively induce vection. In experiment 2 we used the downward motion of identical dots to induce vection. Participants observed stimuli while holding either an umbrella or a wooden sword. Results showed that vection was inhibited when participants held the umbrella and the stimuli was perc…

Diagnostic exercise: High mortality in a flock of chukar partridge chicks (Alectoris chukar) in California.

Mortality of 20% of a flock of 1000 chukar partridge chicks occurred over a 6-week period in Northern California from August to September 2012. Affected birds were 2 to 42 days old and died without premonitory clinical signs or after showing ruffled feathers and anorexia for 24 to 72 hours. Three carcasses were submitted for necropsy, 2 birds had hemorrhagic tracheitis grossly, and all 3 had lymphoplasmacytic and histiocytic myocarditis with myocardial necrosis microscopically. The differential diagnoses and the diagnostic workup to achieve a final diagnosis are discussed. The detection of 2 z…

Commercial hatchery practices have long-lasting effects on laying hens' spatial behaviour and health.

The commercial hatchery process is globally standardized and exposes billions of day-old layer chicks to stress every year. By alleviating this early stress, on-farm hatching is thought to improve animal welfare, yet little is known about its effects throughout production. This study compared welfare indicators and spatial behaviours during the laying period of hens hatched in an on-farm environment (OFH) to those hatched in a commercial hatchery and transferred at one day-old to a rearing barn (STAN). In particular, we assessed how OFH and TRAN hens differed in space-use and movement behaviou

Motor incoordination, intracranial fat bodies, and breeding strategy in Crested ducks (Anas platyrhynchos f.d.).

Some Crested ducks (CR) are burdened with an intracranial fat body that, depending on the size and location, may lead to varying degrees of motor incoordination. A behavioral test is proposed that helps to identify those CR individuals bearing the problematical fat body. The test consists of putting the ducks on their backs and measuring the time required to right themselves. This was repeated 13 times per animal, and means were calculated. The minimum time required was 0.5 s, and the maximum was 62.6 s. Individuals that show motor incoordination need more time than ducks without such problems

Development of a rapid recombinase polymerase amplification assay for avian polyomaviruses.

Budgerigar fledgling disease, caused by avian polyomavirus (APV), is an immunosuppressive condition in budgerigars that typically manifests as abdominal swelling, absence of down feathers on the dorsal and ventral regions, subdermal bleeding in nestlings, and high mortality. A new APV detection relied on real-time quantitative recombinase polymerase amplification (real-time RPA) targeting the large T antigen gene using specific probe and primers. Detection can be accomplished within 25 minutes at 41°C, with this detection threshold of 2.56 × 102 copies/μL. The real-time RPA assay specific dete…

Alcids-like flapping wing for exploring the role of wing folding in underwater locomotion.

Alcids showcase excellent aerial-aquatic locomotion abilities benefitting from the morphing wing. In the aerial environment, alcids fully extend their wings, while underwater, they partly fold the wings. In this article, we mimicked the wing morphology of the alcids family to explore the hydrodynamic advantage of the folded configuration in the aquatic environment and four three-dimensional-printed wings including any combination of with feather or without feather, and extended or folded were created. The steady-state experiment reveals that the extended wings of alcids double the lift, counte
