Hyperoside suppresses hypoxia-induced A549 survival and proliferation through ferrous accumulation via AMPK/HO-1 axis.

BACKGROUND: Hypoxia is commonly existed in tumors and lead to cancer cell chemo/radio-resistance. It is well-recognized that tumor hypoxia is a major challenge for the treatment of various solid tumors. Hyperoside (quercetin-3-O-galactoside, Hy) possesses antioxidant effects and has been reported to protect against hypoxia/reoxygenation induced injury in cardiomyocytes. Therefore, Hy may be attractive compound applicable to hypoxia-related diseases. PURPOSE: This study was designed to determine the role of Hy in hypoxia-induced proliferation of non-small cell lung cancer cells and the underly

The role of Fe dissolution in olivine-hydroxylamine-induced Fenton reaction for enhanced oxidative degradation of organic pollutant.

In this study, a dye pollutant (methyl orange, MO) was effectively oxidized in a hydroxylamine (HA)-assisted Fenton system using various Al/Si/Fe- and Fe-containing minerals. The fastest degradation kinetics of MO were observed in the olivine-HA Fenton system, whereas other Al/Si/Fe and Fe-rich minerals (magnetite and lepidocrocite) demonstrated much slower degradation kinetics. The degradation rate constants were proportional to dissolved Fe(II) quantities in mineral suspensions (R2 = 0.98), indicating the crucial role of dissolved Fe(II) quantity in HA-assisted Fenton reactions. Radical scav

Complete biological dehalogenation of chlorinated ethylenes in sulfate containing groundwater.

The ability of dehalogenating bacteria to compete with sulfate reducing bacteria for electron donor was studied in microcosms that simulated groundwater contaminated with both chlorinated ethylenes and fuel hydrocarbon compounds. Results demonstrate that reductive dehalogenation of perchloroethylene to ethylene can proceed in the presence of > 100 mg l(-1) sulfate. The hydrogen concentration, which was 2.5 nM in the presence of approximately 150 mg l(-1) sulfate and in the absence of chlorinated compounds, decreased to 0.7 nM during the dechlorination of trichloroethylene and increased to 1.6

Nitrogen Oxide Atom-Transfer Redox Chemistry; Mechanism of NO(g) to Nitrite Conversion Utilizing μ-oxo Heme-Fe(III)-O-Cu(II)(L) Constructs.

While nitric oxide (NO, nitrogen monoxide) is a critically important signaling agent, its cellular concentrations must be tightly controlled, generally through its oxidative conversion to nitrite (NO2(-)) where it is held in reserve to be reconverted as needed. In part, this reaction is mediated by the binuclear heme a3/CuB active site of cytochrome c oxidase. In this report, the oxidation of NO(g) to nitrite is shown to occur efficiently in new synthetic μ-oxo heme-Fe(III)-O-Cu(II)(L) constructs (L being a tridentate or tetradentate pyridyl/alkylamino ligand), and spectroscopic and kinetic in

Development of an automated water toxicity biosensor using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans for monitoring cyanides in natural water for a water filtering plant.

An on-line biosensor consisting of immobilized Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and an oxygen electrode was developed for automated monitoring of acute toxicity in water samples. T. ferrooxidans is an obligatory acidophilic, autotrophic bacterium and derives its energy by the oxidation of ferrous ion, elemental sulfur, and reduced sulfur compounds including metal sulfides. The assay is based on the monitoring of a current increase by addition of toxicoids, which is caused by the inhibition of bacterial respiration and decrease in oxygen consumption. Optimum cell number on the membrane was 5.0 x 10(8)

Optimizing eco-engineering pedogenesis of bauxite residues: Synergistic effects of humus and FeSO4/sulfur on microbial community and function.

Eco-engineered pedogenesis represents a promising approach for soil amelioration of bauxite residues (BRs) through exogenous organic matter. However, the role of humus in mediating this process remains poorly understood, significantly impeding the eco-engineering rehabilitation of BRs. In this study, we conducted pot experiments and subsequent microbial analysis to evaluate the individual improvement of humic acid (HA), fulvic acid (FA), and corn straw (SWZ) on the BRs' pedogenesis. High-throughput sequencing analysis revealed that both FA and SWZ were more effective than HA in steering microb

Spin-polarization manipulation in Co-doped CuFe2O4 for boosted peroxymonosulfate activation toward pharmaceutical contaminant removal.

Transition metal photocatalysts face efficiency limitations in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation due to the rapid charge recombination and sluggish ion redox rate. To overcome this, a series of Co-doped CuFe2-xCoxO4 (CFCxO) photocatalysts were synthesized via a sol-gel approach to promote PMS activation through Cu2+/Cu+, Fe3+/Fe2+, and Co3+/Co2+ ion redox cycles, leading to efficient metronidazole (MTZ) degradation. Notably, the optimized CFC0.6O exhibited a reaction rate constant k of 0.112 min-1 without a magnetic field, approximately 14 times higher than that of CFO (0.008 min-1). Remarkab

Ferrous iron accelerates the population-level recovery of Methanocorpusculum and enhances Dehalococcoides-mediated dechlorination of chloroethenes.

Bioremediation of chloroethenes by Dehalococcoides species is a widely applied strategy for subsurface detoxification because it is environmentally friendly and cost-effective; however, field applications are often limited by slow and incomplete remediation, particularly due to delayed population-level recovery of key microorganisms. To identify a practical approach to overcome this limitation, this study investigated how ferrous iron [Fe(II)] modulates the co-occurrence of Dehalococcoides and methanogens to accelerate dechlorination of chloroethenes. Tetrachloroethene dechlorination was evalu

Insights into the enhanced transport across membranes in self-regenerable biohybrid with ferrous sulfide for photo-assisted uranium reduction fixation.

Bioreduction is considered to be one of the most effective methods for the bioremediation of uranium-contaminated soil or water, in which the low extracellular electron transfer (EET) rate of microorganisms seriously affects the reduction and fixation of uranium through microorganisms. Here, we develop an in-situ self-regenerable Shewanella putrefaciens (S. putrefaciens)-FeS biohybrid system to enhance the efficiency of uranium reduction. The dense layer of bio-FeS on the cell surface of S. putrefaciens provides excellent uranium tolerance and activity for bio-FeS-mediated uranium reduction. B

Unveiling the power of bene (Pistacia atlantica) hull scum: Boosting oxidative stability with methanolic extract and ferrous ions.

This study investigated the antioxidant potential of Bene hull methanolic extract (BHME) in mitigating lipid oxidation in vegetable oils across four systems (oil-in-water emulsions and bulk oils, both with and without Fe+2). The BHME's free radical-scavenging assay and ferric reducing abilities were compared with natural (α-tocopherol, CEX) and synthetic (BHT) antioxidants. The research analyzed different BHME concentrations (0, 400, 800, and 1600 ppm) and evaluated the effects of storage time on lipid oxidation, monitored through Peroxide Value (PV) and Carbonyl Value (CV) measurements. Novel nanohybrid iron (II/III) phthalocyanine-based carbon nanotubes as catalysts for organic pollutant removal: process optimization by chemometric approach.

In the present study, two iron phthalocyanine (FePc)-based nanocatalysts were synthesized and fully characterized. The carbon nanotubes (CNT) functionalized in an easy way with either Fe(II)Pc or Fe(III)Pc exhibit a very good catalytical activity. The activity in real wastewater effluent was comparable with the activity in distilled water. The procedure of modeling and optimizing with the assistance of chemometrics, utilizing design of experiments (DOE) and response surface methodology (RSM), revealed the conditions of optimum for decaying Reactive Yellow 84 on the nanocatalysts FePc_CNT. Electroplating sludge derived CuFe2O4/MgFe2O4 metal oxide composites for highly efficient removal of Congo red.

The utilization of electroplating sludge (ES) to derive metal oxide functional materials is a key strategy, as it enables the recycling of valuable elements, mitigates environmental risks, and aligns with green, low-carbon development strategies. Nevertheless, the development of metal oxide composite functional materials with distinctive structures and properties derived from ES continues to present several challenges. Herein, we synthesized CuFe2O4/MgFe2O4 metal oxide composites from ES by one-step hydrothermal method. As-obtained CuFe2O4/MgFe2O4 metal oxide composites (MMOs) have a unique la

The phospho-ferrozine assay: a tool to study bacterial redox-active metabolites produced at the plant root.

Soil microbial communities are pivotal to plant health and nutrient acquisition. It is becoming increasingly clear that many interactions, both among and between microbes and plants, are governed by small bioactive molecules or "secondary metabolites" that can aid in communication, competition, and nutrient uptake. Yet, secondary metabolite biogeography - who makes what, where, and why-is in its infancy. Further, secondary metabolite biosynthesis genes are often silent or weakly expressed under standard laboratory conditions, making it incredibly difficult to study these small molecules. To be

Enhanced dissolution of arsenic in anaerobic soils upon organic amendment application: acid detergent-soluble organic matter as a potential indicator.

Application of organic amendments (OAMs) often enhances arsenic (As) dissolution in paddy soils. Therefore, understanding the properties of OAMs that determine the extent of As dissolution is essential for appropriate soil management. Since As dissolution increases with decrease in soil redox potential caused by microbial respiration, the decomposability of OAMs might be a critical factor controlling As dissolution in amended soils. We hypothesized that contents of acid detergent-soluble organic matter (ADSOM, mainly composed of non-fiber organic matter and hemicellulose) in OAMs can help esti

Oxalated zero valent iron enables highly efficient heterogeneous Fenton reaction by self-adapting pH and accelerating proton cycle.

Heterogeneous Fenton reactions of zero-valent iron (ZVI) requires the sufficient release of Fe(II) to catalyze the H2O2 decomposition. However, the rate-limiting step of proton transfer through the passivation layer of ZVI restricted the Fe(II) release via Fe0 core corrosion. Herein we modified the shell of ZVI with highly proton-conductive FeC2O4·2H2O by ball-milling (OA-ZVIbm), and demonstrated its high heterogeneous Fenton performance of thiamphenicol (TAP) removal, with 500 times enhancement of the rate constant. More importantly, the OA-ZVIbm/H2O2 showed little attenuation of the Fenton a

Zeolite enhanced iron-modified biocarrier drives Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycle to achieve nitrogen removal from eutrophic water.

The problem of nitrogen removal in eutrophic water needs to be solved. Two new autotrophic nitrogen removal technologies, ammonia oxidation coupled with Fe(III) reduction (Feammox) and Nitrate-dependent Fe(II) oxidation (NDFO), have been shown to have the potential to treat eutrophic water. However, the continuous addition of iron sources not only costs more, but also leads to sludge mineralization. In this study, nano-sized iron powder was loaded on the surface of K3 filler as a solid iron source for the extracellular metabolism of iron-trophic bacteria. At the same time, due to the high sele

Preparation, characterization, and bioavailability evaluation of antioxidant phosvitin peptide-ferrous complex.

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is one of the commonest global nutritional deficiency diseases, and the low bioavailability of iron is a key contributing factor. The peptide-iron complex could be used as a novel iron supplement to improve iron bioavailability. RESULTS: In this study, antioxidant low molecular weight (<3 kDa) phosvitin peptide (named PP-4) was separated to prepare a phosvitin peptide-ferrous complex (named PP-4-Fe); then the structural conformation of PP-4-Fe was characterized and its bioavailability by in vitro digestion was evaluated. The results showed that PP-4 ha
