Hypotonous maculopathy is a serious complication of glaucoma filtration surgery. A patient with hypotonous maculopathy due to excessive filtration was treated with intravitreal gas. During the next several months, the intraocular pressure increased and the visual acuity improved. Intravitreal gas is useful for the treatment of hypotonous maculopathy due to excessive aqueous filtration.

BACKGROUND: The prospective study was undertaken to analyze retinal thickness of the macula and anterior chamber depth in patients undergoing filtration surgery at different times of follow-up.
METHODS: Forty-four patients (45 eyes) were included. The thickness of the fovea and the extrafoveal retina were measured using optical coherence tomography (OCT). Anterior chamber depth was determined using the IOLMaster. All standard clinical examination and measurements were performed prior to surgery, at the 2nd day (1-3 days), 1 week, 1 month and 3 months after surgery.

In one aphakic and one pseudophakic patient without previous filtration surgery, a transconjunctival needling procedure similar to that used for failed filtration procedures was performed to create a filtering bleb. In both cases, intraocular pressure was successfully lowered for 6 months until the occurrence of bleb encapsulation, which was relieved by transconjunctival needling. There were no complications. In selected cases, this minimally invasive slit-lamp needling procedure provides successful filtration.

Serum creatinine is used to estimate the glomerular filtration rate (GFR). The serum creatinine, however, may not accurately reflect the GFR in spina bifida patients, who often have decreased overall muscle mass resulting from spinal cord abnormalities. Activation of neutrophils may contribute to lung injury in the adult respiratory distress syndrome. We added rabbit neutrophils to the pulmonary circulation of salt-perfused and ventilated isolated rabbit lungs. Cyclosporin A (CyA) is now commonly used in the management of children with steroid-dependent nephrotic syndrome. In order to assess nephrotoxicity related to CyA therapy, we measured glomerular filtration rate (GFR) on 123 occasions in 24 children with minimal change nephrotic syndrome receiving CyA. GFR was estimated from the plasma clearance of 51chromium-EDTA every 3 months during CyA therapy of up to 27 months duration.
