Wandering missiles: autopsy study.

Five cases of firearm missile emboli are reported. Three were not unusual arterial bullet emboli. One, however, was a single shotgun pellet embolus which produced death from cerebral infarction. The fifth case appears to be the first known to embolize within the portal system and was associated with a 'wandering bullet' within the pericardial space.

Percutaneous nephroscopy combined with the laser used for right kidney bullet extraction: A case report.

RATIONALE: Wounds caused by firearms are intractable problems in treating war traumas and clinical management. Conventional open surgery inflicts large injury and leads to slow recovery. At the same time, most patients suffer from compound injuries with the critical condition and poor operation tolerance. Thus, it is crucial to probe into the minimally invasive surgical removal of residual kidney bullets. PATIENT CONCERNS: We report a case where a bullet remained in the right renal parenchyma on the patient, with penetrating injury in his liver. DIAGNOSIS: Obviously the patient has suffered …

Effects of Weapons on Aggressive Thoughts, Angry Feelings, Hostile Appraisals, and Aggressive Behavior: A Meta-Analytic Review of the Weapons Effect Literature.

A landmark 1967 study showed that simply seeing a gun can increase aggression-called the "weapons effect." Since 1967, many other studies have attempted to replicate and explain the weapons effect. This meta-analysis integrates the findings of weapons effect studies conducted from 1967 to 2017 and uses the General Aggression Model (GAM) to explain the weapons effect. It includes 151 effect-size estimates from 78 independent studies involving 7,668 participants. As predicted by the GAM, our naïve meta-analytic results indicate that the mere presence of weapons increased aggressive thoughts, hos

Forecasting the future of American mass shootings with Bayesian agent-based model calibration.

Mass shootings represent a persistent and devastating public health crisis in the United States, yet their rarity makes them difficult to mo … om the intersection of three factors: the emergence of a motivated potential perpetrator, access to firearms, and the presence of a suitable target population. Through density estimation of the predicted severity of events from our ABM model, we evaluate the log-likelihood of historical US mass shooting data, enabling Bayesian posterior inference over the …

Breaking the Silence: An Epidemiological Report on Asian American and Pacific Islander Youth Mental Health and Suicide (1999-2021).

BACKGROUND: Limited studies have focused on recent trends in Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) youth suicide. This study aimed to e … d from 2014 onwards. The most common methods of suicide deaths in this population were suffocation, firearms and poisoning. Rates of suicide were higher among AA males than females, although more AA females reported depressive symptoms, including suicidal planning and attempts. CONCLUSION: This study shows a concerning increase in suicide rates among AAPI …

Using dat … strangulation was the most common mechanism of suicide among PEH (44.4%), followed by deaths due to firearms (21.6%). Firearms were the most common mechanism of homicide deaths among PEH (48.0%). [Laryngeal traumatism following a hunting accident].

Laryngo-tracheal traumatisms are not frequent at peace time. They are life-threatening chirurgical situations. They frequently use to be multiple lesions and attaining several anatomic regions. They are considered mortal situations if they are localized in head and neck regions. We report one case of such pathology in a 33 years old male who suffered a laryngeal and thoracic injury for firearm.

Impact of social determinants of health on causes of ophthalmic trauma: A narrative review.

Ophthalmic trauma (OT) is a leading cause of monocular vision loss that preferentially affects certain populations. In this narrative review, we aim to discuss the impact of social determinants of health (SDOH) on the prevalence and outcomes of OT. We conducted a literature search to identify studies published between 2019 and 2024 that discuss the impact of SDOH on OT. A total of 92 studies were included. Overall, males, particularly those of younger and working age groups, are most commonly affected with OT, with assault-, firearm-, and occupation-related injuries being the most frequent. In

Imaging Evaluation of Abdominopelvic Gunshot Trauma.

Firearm-related injuries, or gunshot wounds (GSWs), are among the most important worldwide public health problems, resulting in considerable annual morbidity, disability, and mortality. GSWs to the abdomen and pelvis are associated with substantial injuries to multiple organs and tissues. Imaging plays an important role in identifying these injuries, dictating nonoperative management, and determining imaging and clinical follow-up, as well as helping manage potential long-term complications. CT is the primary imaging modality used to evaluate these injuries and their complications, including u

Metal dust deposition in a shotgun wound associated with barrel modification.

Contact-range gunshot wounds commonly demonstrate deposition of black soot in and around the wound. Deposition of other visible pigments originating from the firearm has not been specifically described. In the current case, an adult male was found dead adjacent to a shotgun fixed in a vice grip with a modified, shortened barrel. A handheld, powered, metal grinding wheel was nearby. Autopsy revealed an intraoral gunshot wound, including soot deposition in and around the mouth and within the wound track. In addition, there was a peculiar, gray, lustrous film on the lips, gingiva, and anterior te

Gender differences in suicide methods.

INTRODUCTION: Gender differences in suicide completion rates have been attributed to the differences in lethality of suicide methods chosen by men and women, but few empirical studies have investigated factors other than demographic characteristics that might explain this differential. METHODS: Data from the 621 suicides in Summit County, Ohio during 1997-2006 were disaggregated by gender to compare known correlates of suicide risk on three methods of suicide-firearm, hanging and drug poisoning. RESULTS: Compared to women, men who completed suicide with firearms were more likely to be marrie…

Examining potentially preventable mortality in trauma: What can we do better?

BACKGROUND: Trauma systems have undergone substantial evolution over the past several decades. However, we have yet to achieve the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine goal of zero preventable deaths from injury. In this study, we examined preventable deaths within advanced trauma systems to identify opportunities for further improvement. METHODS: Task Order One, coordinated within the Linking Investigators in Trauma and Emergency Medical Services Network (LiTES) that included over 30 emergency medical service (EMS) agencies transporting to eight level 1 trauma centers in

Psychosocial Risk Factors Associated With Facial Self-Inflicted and Assault-Related Gunshot Wounds at A Southeastern Level 1 Trauma Center.

OBJECTIVE: Firearm injuries are a leading cause of death in the United States. Few studies have examined psychiatric and social risk factors associated with facial self-inflicted gunshot wounds (SIGSWs) and assault-related gunshot wounds (AGSWs) in regions with high levels of firearm-related violence. This study aimed to identify factors associated with injury intent and mortality in a regional Level 1 trauma center serving the Southeastern United States. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective medical record review of individuals presenting to Vanderbilt University Medical Center Emergency Dep
