[A microcytic sideroblastic anemia successfully treated with B6 vitamin].

INTRODUCTION: Sideroblastic anemia is a rare cause of microcytic anemia, which is characterized by ring sideroblasts on bone marrow aspirate. This anemia can be congenital or acquired. CASE REPORT: We report the case of an alcoholic 49-year-old man who presented with a severe microcytic sideroblastic anemia related to pyridoxine (B6 vitamin) deficiency. Acid folic deficiency was associated. The blood count normalized within one month after vitamin supplementation. CONCLUSION: Pyridoxine deficiency must be sought in sideroblastic anemia in patients at risk.

[Nutritional anemia in children].

The anaemia most frequently encountered in paediatrics is iron deficiency anaemia. The deficiency may be latent or patent. It may be responsible for repeated infections and interfere with the child's psychomotor development. The disease is most often due to a low intake of dietary iron, and it can be prevented by supplementing the mothers during pregnancy and by an adequate diet. Folic acid and vitamin B12 deficiencies are much rarely encountered. Vitamin E deficiency may result in haemolysis, notably in premature infants.

Preventing low birthweight through maternal multiple micronutrient supplementation: a cluster-randomized, controlled trial in Indramayu, West Java.

BACKGROUND: Micronutrient deficiencies may contribute to a higher incidence of low birthweight (LBW). UNICEF/United Nations University/World Health Organization jointly proposed a formulation for a multiple micronutrient supplement for pregnant women, and several effectiveness trials were conducted to assess its impact. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of prenatal multiple micronutrient supplementation for improving birth size, pregnancy outcome, and maternal micronutrient status in comparison with iron-folic acid supplementation. METHODS: We carried out a cluster-randomized, controlled t

Prenatal micronutrient supplementation and intellectual and motor function in early school-aged children in Nepal.

CONTEXT: Iron and zinc are important for the development of both intellectual and motor skills. Few studies have examined whether iron and zinc supplementation during gestation, a critical period of central nervous system development, affects children's later functioning. OBJECTIVE: To examine intellectual and motor functioning of children whose mothers received micronutrient supplementation during pregnancy. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Cohort follow-up of 676 children aged 7 to 9 years in June 2007-April 2009 who had been born to women in 4 of 5 groups of a community-based, double-bl

Quinolinic acid contributes to maladaptive kidney injury and acute kidney injury-to-chronic kidney disease transition.

The transition from acute kidney injury (AKI) to chronic kidney disease (CKD) remains a major clinical problem with unclear underlying mechanisms. Emerging evidence suggests that alterations in tryptophan metabolism, particularly in the production of downstream metabolites such as quinolinic acid (QA), play a role in renal pathophysiology. QA, an intermediate in de novo nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide biosynthesis, is metabolized by quinolinate phosphoribosyltransferase (QPRT). We investigated whether QA contributes to kidney injury using models of folic acid-induced AKI-to-CKD transition an

Understanding knowledge and practices of nutritional supplements in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: The use of nutritional supplements (NSs) has increased worldwide and is usually driven by improved health, athletic performance, and esthetics. However, motivations, practices, and health impacts differ across populations. The aim of this research was to assess knowledge, attitudes, and practices of NSs, especially those with public health implications, such as folic acid and iodine. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among Saudi adults in the Eastern Province. Using convenient sampling, online questionnaire solicited data on demographics, hea

Folate: a key to optimizing health and reducing disease risk in the elderly.

Inadequate folate status is associated with an increased risk for chronic diseases that may have a negative impact on the health of the aging population. Folate, a water-soluble vitamin, includes naturally occurring food folate and synthetic folic acid in supplements and fortified foods. Inadequate folate status may result in hyperhomocysteinemia, a significant risk factor for atherosclerotic vascular disease, changes in DNA that may result in pro-carcinogenic effects and increased risk for cognitive dysfunction. Folate status may be negatively influenced by inadequate intake, genetic polymorp

The effects of dietary folate and zinc on the outcome of pregnancy and early growth in rats.

1. The objective of the present study was to determine the effects of two levels of folic acid and two levels of zinc in the diets of rats during pregnancy and lactation. It addressed, among other things, the question of whether an inhibitory effect of folic (pteroylmonoglutamic) acid on Zn absorption might result in a secondary Zn deficiency in either the dams or the pups. 2. A purified diet was given to four groups of female DNL (Norwegian) Hooded rats, before and during pregnancy and during lactation. It contained the four possible combinations of: no added folic acid or 100 micrograms adde

[Encephalopathies due to vitamin deficiency].

Encephalopathy may develop within 1 to 3 weeks upon cessation of thiamine supply. Deficiency of folic acid may require months until encephalopathy develops, whereas this may take years for vitamin B12 deficiency. It may be harmful for the patient if the impairment of cognitive functions is considered to be due to Alzheimer's disease, even though vitamin deficiency is the cause. Differential diagnosis, however, is not easy. Risk factors for vitamin deficiencies include reduction of body weight, associated surgical procedures and nausea during pregnancy.

Burning mouth syndrome: results of screening tests for vitamin and mineral deficiencies, thyroid hormone, and glucose levels-experience at Mayo Clinic over a decade.

BACKGROUND: Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a disorder characterized by chronic mouth pain in the absence of objective clinical abnormalities. Vitamin or mineral deficiencies may have a role in BMS, but data regarding the prevalence and relevance of hematinic deficiencies are conflicting. We aimed to determine the frequency of specific laboratory abnormalities in patients with BMS. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the results of screening blood tests in patients with BMS at our institution between January 2003 and December 2013. RESULTS: Among 659 patients with BMS, the most common decre

Nutritional deficiencies in gastric bypass patients; incidence, time of occurrence and implications for post-operative surveillance.

BACKGROUND: Post-operative nutritional deficiencies are a common complication following bariatric surgery. The incidence and time of occurrence are not clear, and the efficacy of supplementation remains questionable. Clear guidelines for nutritional follow-up and counselling are needed. METHODS: Preoperative and post-operative deficiencies were determined in a group of 427 gastric bypass patients. The predictive value of preoperative laboratory findings for the development of post-operative deficiencies, the time of occurrence and the effect of supplementation of common deficiencies was studi

Biochemical assessment of the nutritional status of low-income pregnant women of Mexican descent.

Biochemical parameters of nutritional status were investigated in 300 women of Mexican descent during the first and second trimesters of pregnancy. Blood samples were obtained from the women during clinic visits, and measurements were made of serum iron, hemoglobin, hematocrit, serum protein, and transferrin saturation. Additionally, the nutritional status of seven vitamins was determined either by direct assay of the vitamin levels in blood or by measurement of erythrocyte enzyme stimulation. Thiamin and riboflavin were also determined in causal urine samples. Very few women, 8% or less, were

Insights into metabolic mechanisms underlying folate-responsive neural tube defects: a minireview.

Neural tube defects (NTDs), including anencephaly and spina bifida, arise from the failure of neurulation during early embryonic development. Neural tube defects are common birth defects with a heterogenous and multifactorial etiology with interacting genetic and environmental risk factors. Although the mechanisms resulting in failure of neural tube closure are unknown, up to 70% of NTDs can be prevented by maternal folic acid supplementation. However, the metabolic mechanisms underlying the association between folic acid and NTD pathogenesis have not been identified. This review summarizes ou

Vitamin status in patients with chronic renal failure.

Many factors complicate the effort for a recommendation on individual vitamin requirements in CRF. On the basis of our present incomplete knowledge about the handling of vitamins in uremia, suggestions for appropriate supplementation only of water-soluble vitamins are given. Patients with advanced CRF without dialysis treatment should receive daily supplements of vitamin B6 (5 mg), ascorbic acid (70-100 mg), and the normal recommended daily allowance of the other water-soluble vitamins in addition to the vitamin intake from the diet. We give folic acid only in patients taking antifolate drugs
