Diarrheagenic pathogens in adults attending a hospital in Singapore.

BACKGROUND: Singapore's diarrhoeal notification system is based on specific pathogens. Official data may thus be skewed towards notifiable diseases. Limited information is available on the profiles of aetiological agents responsible for acute gastroenteritis (AGE) cases, especially among the adult population. To understand the frequency and distribution of potential causative agents of diarrheal disease in Singapore, we screened adults' stool samples collected from a large public hospital. METHODS: The stool samples were screened for 18 diarrheagenic pathogens using a combination of commercia

Optimal control analysis of Taenia saginata bovine cysticercosis and human taeniasis.

Bovine cysticercosis and human taeniasis are neglected food-borne diseases that pose challenge to food safety, human health and livelihood of rural livestock farmers. In this paper, we have formulated and analyzed a deterministic model for transmission dynamics and control of taeniasis and cysticercosis in humans and cattle respectively. The analysis shows that both the disease free equilibrium (DFE) and endemic equilibrium (EE) exist. To study the dynamics of the diseases, we derived the basic reproduction number R 0 by next generation matrix method which shows whether the diseases die or per

The impact of COVID-19 on the hot food takeaway planning regulatory environment: perspectives of local authority professionals in the North East of England.

AIMS: Planning regulations have been used to prevent the over-proliferation of hot food takeaways, minimising the impact of local obesogenic environments. To help mitigate the effects of lockdown, the UK government introduced temporary changes in March 2020 to Planning Regulations for England, allowing food retailers to open for takeaway services beyond 'ancillary' level without needing to apply for planning permission through permitted development rights (PDR). Businesses are required to notify their local authority (LA) when they implement PDRs. To better understand the impact of regulations

A mouse model of prenatal ethanol exposure using a voluntary drinking paradigm.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders is estimated to be as high as 1 in 100 births. Efforts to better understand the basis of prenatal ethanol-induced impairments in brain functioning, and the mechanisms by which ethanol produces these defects, will rely on the use of animal models of fetal alcohol exposure (FAE). METHODS: Using a saccharin-sweetened alcohol solution, we developed a free-choice, moderate alcohol access model of prenatal alcohol exposure. Stable drinking of a saccharin solution (0.066%) was established in female mice. Ethanol then was added to the sacc

Indigestible foreign bodies in the forestomach of slaughtered goats in Mogadishu, Somalia.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The primary domestic animal in Somali communities is the goat. Their main economic importance is as a food source and a main form of agriculture in the country. There has been a recent decline in the goat population in Somalia, which may be due to the shortage of feed and an increasingly contaminated environment that is affecting the population's food supply and nutritional status. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and the factors associated with indigestible foreign bodies (IFBs) ingestion in goats in Mogadishu, Somalia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional

Environmental drivers of broiler carcass condemnation in humid subtropical regions: an exploratory study on the association of lagged climatic effects.

Intensive poultry production in humid subtropical agro-ecologies faces unique environmental challenges that compromise carcass quality, welfare, and food security. While climatic influences are recognized, the temporal dimensions of these effects remain largely underexplored. This study quantified the immediate and time-lagged (1-3 months) influences of climatic variables on 12 causes of broiler carcass condemnation in a representative subtropical hub. Longitudinal data (2021-2023) from federally inspected slaughterhouses in Santa Catarina, Brazil, a relevant case study for poultry production

Occurrence and Morphometric Characterization of Cysticercus tenuicollis in Sheep From Minas Gerais, Brazil.

In livestock production, the health of slaughtered animals is crucial to ensuring food safety. In this context, animal cysticercosis poses serious problems within production systems. Cysticercosis caused by Cysticercus tenuicollis (larval stage of Taenia hydatigena) is common in pasture-raised ruminants. Although this helminthiasis is of low pathogenicity for production animals, it is difficult to diagnose during inspection procedures. Animals become infected by ingesting eggs present in water and/or feed contaminated with feces from domestic or wild canids. In this study, viscera from Dorper/

Visible near-infrared hyperspectral imaging as a tool to characterise chicken breasts with myopathies and their durability.

The surgency of myopathies has posed challenges for the industry as well as researchers, making relevant the use of objective and non-destructive technologies to inspect and discriminate these disorders. In this context, hyperspectral imaging (HSI) provides special properties that allow for an accurate selection of the affected region(s). Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the feasibility of visible and near-infrared (VIS-NIR) HSI to (1) discriminate between myopathies and (2) assess their evolution during refrigerated storage. Hyperspectral images of 98 and 77 chicken breasts, for exp

Tritordeum: Promising Cultivars to Improve Health.

Tritordeum is an amphiploides species resulting from the hybridization between durum wheat (T. durum) and wild barley (H. chilense). This new cereal is considered a natural crop as it is obtained by traditional breeding techniques. Given its appreciable organoleptic characteristics, agronomic features, presence of interesting components, and good technological properties, Tritordeum is of promising interest for the development of health-oriented foods. In this study, we evaluated two registered Tritordeum cultivars, Bulel and Aucan. T. durum (Provenzal) was employed as the positive control. Th

Terahertz imaging for non-invasive classification of healthy and cimiciato-infected hazelnuts.

The development of new non-invasive approaches able to recognize defective food is currently a lively field of research. In particular, a simple and non-destructive method able to recognize defective hazelnuts, such as cimiciato-infected ones, in real-time is still missing. This study has been designed to detect the presence of such damaged hazelnuts. To this aim, a measurement setup based on terahertz (THz) radiation has been developed. Images of a sample of 150 hazelnuts have been acquired in the low THz range by a compact and portable active imaging system equipped with a 0.14 THz source an

Validation of the TrichinEasy® digestion system for the detection of Anisakidae larvae in fish products.

Anisakis and other parasites belonging to the Anisakidae family are organisms of interest for human health, because of their high zoonotic potential. Parasites belonging to this family can cause Anisakiasis, a parasitological disease caused by the ingestion of raw, infested fish products. Furthermore, evidence from the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority; EFSA 2010) has highlighted the allergological potential of nematodes belonging to the Anisakis genre. The detection and identification of Anisakidae larvae in fish products requires an initial visual inspection of the fish sample, as well as

Discussing endogenous NO(•)/HNO interconversion aided by phenolic drugs and vitamins.

The reduction of NO(•) to HNO/NO(-) under biologically compatible conditions has always been thought as unlikely, mostly because of the negative reduction potential: E°(NO(•),H(+)/HNO) = -0.55 V vs NHE at physiological pH. Nonetheless, during the past decade, several works hinted at the possible NO-to-HNO conversion mediated by moderate biological reductants. Very recently, we have shown that the reaction of NO(•) with ascorbate and aromatic alcohols occurs through a proton-coupled nucleophilic attack (PCNA) of the alcohol to NO(•), yielding an intermediate RO-N(H)O(•) species, which further d

A modified mark test for own-body recognition in pig-tailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina).

Classic mirror self-recognition mark tests involve familiarizing the subject with its mirror image, surreptitiously applying a mark on the subject's eyebrow, nose, or ear, and measuring self-directed behaviors toward the mark. For many non-human primate species, however, direct gaze at the face constitutes an aggressive and threatening signal. It is therefore possible that monkeys fail the mark test because they do not closely inspect their faces in a mirror and hence they have no expectations about their physical appearance. In the current study, we prevented two pig-tailed macaques (Macaca n
