Molecular properties of plant-based proteins for alternative protein.

Alternative proteins, or alt proteins, are proteins obtained from non-animal sources like plant sources, meat cultured in labs, and other sources like fungi and insects. These contain a variety of benefits and are gaining popularity worldwide. Some chronic diseases require a low-red-meat diet, which can be fulfilled through alternative proteins, providing similar benefits to those of animal-based proteins. This chapter deals with the sustainability aspect of using alternative proteins. A sustainable protein refers to a protein that is efficient in terms of health benefits, taste, environmental

The nightmare of FDA clearance/approval to market: perception or reality?

Over the last few years the Center for Device Evaluation and Research (CDRH) at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received annually over 16 thousand submissions related to medical devices. Over 10,000 of these are major submissions which include applications to conduct clinical trials and applications to market medical devices for a specified indication for use. Each application is carefully considered. FDA personnel work closely with applicants to ensure that clinical trial design minimizes risk to the patients and maximizes benefit with respect to addressing the safety and effective

Adverse drug events: identification and attribution.

The definition of an adverse drug event should be tailored to one's purpose in examining the incident. Although the more specific of these definitions is required for scientific evaluation of the link between drug and event, other less stringent definitions are usually adequate for clinical purposes. Knowledge about the safety profile of a drug in humans is limited at the time of marketing. The mechanisms for supplementing safety data during postmarketing include (1) the Spontaneous Reporting System maintained by the Food and Drug Administration, (2) formal projects to assemble safety data on

An investigation into the nutritional composition and cost of gluten-free versus regular food products in the UK.

BACKGROUND: The gluten-free (GF) food market has expanded considerably, although there is limited comparative evidence for the nutritional quality and cost of GF food products. The present study aims to compare the nutrient composition and cost of GF and gluten-containing (regular) foods across 10 food categories in the UK. METHODS: Nutritional information and the cost of GF foods available in the UK (n = 679) and comparable regular foods (n = 1045) were systematically collected from manufacturer and supermarket websites. Foods were classified using UK front-of-pack labelling for content of f

Terahertz Spectroscopic Analysis of Lactose in Infant Formula: Implications for Detection and Quantification.

Lactose plays a significant role in daily lives as a constituent of various food and pharmaceutical products. Yet, lactose intolerance conditions demand low-lactose and lactose-free products in the market. These increasing nutritional claims and labels on food products entail simple and reliable methods of analysis that can be used for meeting quality standards, nutritional claims and legal requirements. In this study, terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) was employed to analyse α-lactose monohydrate qualitatively and quantitatively in food products. Both absorption spectra and absorpt

Integrating Botanicals into Oncology Care: Consideration of FDA Regulation of Botanical Products and Botanical Clinical Trials.

Modern cancer pharmacotherapy consists of contributions from natural products, their structural analogues, and chemotherapies. Interest in natural products is being revitalized in oncology. Natural products may be classified as food, dietary supplements, drugs, or cosmetics depending on their intended use. A natural product intended to prevent, diagnose, cure, mitigate, or treat disease would be regulated as a drug. Most natural products are regulated as dietary supplements, intended to affect the structure or function of the body. In 2023, Americans spent around $58 billion on dietary supplem

The rise and fall of the baby's bottle.

As the traditional practice of breast-feeding and later weaning of babies slowly regains popularity in Europe and America, the Third World is just getting used to the idea of bottle-feeding and early weaning. Infant food manufacturers have been indicted for irresponsible marketing of their products, but they are not totally responsible for the present situation. The author examines the origins and development of bottle-feeding, and argues that the present polarisation of views can only be resolved by cooperation between the antagonists.

Green extraction of carotenoids and oil produced by Rhodosporidium paludigenum using supercritical CO2 extraction: Evaluation of cell disruption methods and extraction kinetics.

The constantly expanding functional food market has steered scientific research towards alternative sources of bioactive compounds. Red yeasts are valuable producers of active ingredients such as carotenoids and microbial oil. Efficient and sustainable recovery methods are required when food applications are targeted. In this study, intracellular carotenoids and oil synthesized by Rhodosporidium paludigenum in batch bioreactor cultures were recovered using supercritical CO2 (SFE-CO2) as a green alternative to conventional organic solvents. Yeast biomass was subjected to six different cell disr

Extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae from ready-to-eat foods: Genetic diversity and antibiotic susceptibility.

Ready-to-eat (RTE) foods are widely marketed in China and are important components of everyday diet. In this study, a total of 2000 RTE food samples were analyzed, 252 (12.60%) of which were positive for Enterobacteriaceae, and 48 were identified as containing extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli isolates. Furthermore, the antimicrobial resistance patterns of these isolates to 14 antimicrobial agents revealed that most isolates were resistant to aminoglycosides and β-lactam antibiotics. The TEM-type gene was prevalent in our isolates (79.17%). The isolates (n = 48) w

Reoccurrence of botulinum neurotoxin subtype A3 inducing food-borne botulism, Slovakia, 2015.

A case of food-borne botulism occurred in Slovakia in 2015. Clostridium botulinum type A was isolated from three nearly empty commercial hummus tubes. The product, which was sold in Slovakia and the Czech Republic, was withdrawn from the market and a warning was issued immediately through the European Commission's Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF). Further investigation revealed the presence of botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) subtype BoNT/A3, a very rare subtype implicated in only one previous outbreak (Loch Maree in Scotland, 1922). It is the most divergent subtype of BoNT/A with 15.4%

What Should We Eat? Biopolitics, Ethics, and Nutritional Scientism.

Public health advocates, government agencies, and commercial organizations increasingly use nutritional science to guide food choice and diet as a way of promoting health, preventing disease, or marketing products. We argue that in many instances such references to nutritional science can be characterized as nutritional scientism. We examine three manifestations of nutritional scientism: (1) the simplification of complex science to increase the persuasiveness of dietary guidance, (2) superficial and honorific references to science in order to justify cultural or ideological views about food an

The 'burn' of ranitidine recall: current insights and mitigation strategies.

Ranitidine was one of the most commonly used medications for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease. On 1 April 2020, the US Food and Drug Administration requested all manufacturers to immediately withdraw ranitidine from the market because of concern of higher than acceptable levels of N-nitrosodimethylamine, a potential carcinogen. Herein, we highlight the reason for this recall, along with the effects of this recall on both the patients and healthcare practitioners, and offer insights on management strategies.

SEROPREVALENCE OF TOXOPLASMA GONDII IN GOATS FROM SOUTHWESTERN MISSISSIPPI, USA.

Parasitic infection with Toxoplasma gondii is prevalent in human and animal populations worldwide. Goat production for food and fiber has increased in popularity, and consumer demand for meat and dairy products has led to higher rates of human consumption in the United States. This trend has increased the importance of assessing the public health significance of these dietary commodities. The occurrence of T. gondii and its relevance to commercial goat production for the human food market in Mississippi has not been previously addressed. This study estimated the seroprevalence of T. gondii in
