BACKGROUND: Age-related decline in bone mass increases the risk of skeletal fractures, especially those of the hip, spine, and wrist. Steroidal contraceptives have been associated with changes in bone mineral density in women. Whether such changes affect the risk of fractures later in life is unclear. Hormonal contraceptives are among the most effective and most widely-used contraceptives. Concern about fractures may limit the use of these effective contraceptives. Observational studies can collect data on premenopausal contraceptive use as well as fracture incidence later in life.

Currently described sources of bone graft, such as iliac crest and distal radius, for supplemental fixation of scaphoid fractures are suboptimal. In our experience, olecranon bone has the advantage of providing a convenient source of corticocancellous block graft that can be harvested within the same sterile operative field used for fixation of the scaphoid fracture, and it also causes less postoperative pain compared to that obtained from iliac crest. Here, we describe our surgical technique for harvest and use of olecranon bone graft for fixation of scaphoid fractures.

PURPOSE: To review the treatment outcome of patients with neglected femoral shaft fractures.
METHODS: Records of 22 men and 3 women aged 20 to 55 (mean, 36) years who underwent open interlocking nailing and bone grafting for neglected (2-month-old or more) closed femoral shaft fractures were reviewed. 21 had nonunion and 4 had malunion. All patients had deformed, shortened, and wasted lower limbs, with knee stiffness. The mean delay in presentation was 3 (range, 2-7) months.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of fractures is substantially increased in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) compared to the general population. The factors associated with increased bone fracture in this population are not well understood. Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with decreased bone mass and higher incidence of fractures in the general population. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the reasons on complications of treatment with elastic nail in children's long bone fracture.
METHODS: Sixty-six cases (75 parts of long bone fratures) were treated by elastic nail including 49 male and 17 female. The age ranged from 3 to 17 years, mean 7.8 years. There were 35 femur fractures (2 cases were hibateral), 20 tibia and fibula fractures (12 cases were tibia fractures), 8 radial fractures (1 case was ulna fracture) and 3 humerus fractures. The cases included 4 open fractures and 62 closed fractures. All cases were fresh fractures, no multi-segmental fractures.

An adult llama and four alpacas were referred with long bone fractures. The llama presented with a closed, comminuted fracture of the right metatarsal bones. Two of the alpacas presented with comminuted fractures of the proximal radius. One fracture was closed and one was open. A tricortical bone graft harvested from the ilium was used to reconstruct a severely comminuted open intra-articular distal humerus fracture in an adult patient. The patient demonstrated a satisfactory functional and radiologic outcome despite loss of the lateral trochlear lip. When the lateral portion of the fractured trochlea cannot be repaired, excision of the fragments and insertion of an autogenous corticocancellous bone graft from the iliac crest can restore satisfactory function, even in the setting of an open fracture provided there is limited contamination and tissue devitalization. From April 1998 to January 2000 we treated 14 patients with vertebral osteoporotic compression fractures and intraosseous vacuum phenomenon with intracorporal bone grafting using a mixture of autogenous bone graft and calcium sulfate and posterior instrumentation. The objective of this article is to report upon a simple technique of bone marrow specimen collection of intramedullary bone tumors using a pediatric chest tube.
