The calvarial bones of the infant skull are connected by transient fibrous joints known as sutures and fontanelles, which are essential for … ferences in suture development by identifying an FGF-WNT signaling circuit within the AF that links frontal bone advancement with suture joint formation.

The aim of this three-dimensional finite element analysis study was to examine the biomechanical behaviour of dental implants and the surrounding bone under traumatic frontal force. Models were created of an edentulous atrophic mandible using cone beam computed tomography data from a patient; two titanium alloy implants (Ti-6Al-4V) were virtually inserted into the anterior of the mandible. Six different variations were modelled to represent differences in implant location (lateral incisor vs. canine placement) and implant length (monocortical, bicortical, and long-bicortical). A static force o

The management of frontal bone injury is an important issue, and inappropriate management of such injuries may give rise to serious complications. Piezosurgery is a technique used to perform safe and effective osteotomies using piezoelectric ultrasonic vibrations. This instrument allows a safe method for osteotomy of the cranial vault in close proximity to extremely injury-sensitive tissue such as the brain. After a wide review of the literature, the authors present this technical report, introduce the use of piezosurgery to perform a safe "slim-osteotomies" for treatment of posttraumatic fron…

Cavernous hemangiomas are most commonly found within the subcortical neural parenchyma near the fissura Rolandi, in the basal ganglia, or in the brain stem. Because of advancing neuro-imaging technology and thus resulting in a higher incidence of cavernous hemangiomas they have rising impact in neurosurgery. We present two unusual cases of extra-axial cavernous hemangiomas: one located at the frontal falx, the other within the bone of the right frontal bone. We discuss these and other cases in the literature with respect to the more common differential diagnoses and the appropriate therapy reg…

This article reports the repair of lower nasal defect with forehead compound skin flap consisting of the trochlear artery and subcutaneous tissue pedicle in one stage in 11 patients. The repaired area ranged from 2 x 2 to 4 x 3 cm and the frontal bone area 1.5 x 1 cm. This operation had achieved good results, and the frontal bones were not absorbed, except 1 case, after 1 year follow-up. The methods of this flap design and operation were described. The merits, demerits and points for attention were discussed.

The author describes twenty cases of a type of external craniofacial fracture centred on the orbit, characterized by the frequency of ophthalmological complications, and mobilizing a segment of the frontosphenotemporal vault, and segments of the middle and anterior stages of the base of the skull. It is suggested that these be called frontosphenotemporal fractures.

The mammalian cranial vault largely consists of five flat bones that are joined together along their edges by soft fibrous tissues called sutures. Premature closure of the cranial sutures, craniosynostosis, can lead to serious clinical pathology unless there is surgical intervention. Research into the genetic basis of the disease has led to the development of various animal models that display this condition, e.g. mutant type Fgfr2C342Y/+ mice which display early fusion of the coronal suture (joining the parietal and frontal bones). However, whether the biomechanical properties of the mutant a…

An 8-year-old intact male German Shorthaired Pointer presented as a referral for a one-week history of unilateral ocular discharge of the left eye and progressive temporalis muscle atrophy. Severe temporalis muscle wasting was appreciated, with periorbital asymmetry. Computed tomography showed aggressive and extensive multifocal bone lysis, primarily on the left rostral aspect of the skull, affecting the cribriform plate, frontal bone, ethmoid bone, zygomatic bone, and maxilla, with marked left temporal muscle atrophy and near-complete collapse and destruction of the left frontal sinus. Bone b…

This case reports a bilateral asymmetrical posterior extension of the frontal sinuses into the orbital roof with an unusual expansion into the roof of the optic canal in a 55-year-old male cadaver. The posterior extensions of the sinus were lined by mucoperiosteum and were separated from the underlying orbital contents and optic nerve by a thin plate of bone. This knowledge of an unusual anatomic variation of the frontal sinus may help understand better the ocular and intracranial complications associated with frontal sinus pathologies.

Paranasal sinus mucoceles can present ophthalmic disturbances. Our aim is to discuss the treatment and the endoscopic sinus surgery indication in the fronto-ethmoidal sinus mucoceles. We describe here a case of fronto-ethmoidal sinus mucocele in a patient with an important fronto-ethmoidal tumefaction and an increased prominence of his left eyeball. An endoscopic approach was done after explain to the patient the eventual risks and complications of the procedure, especially to his left eye.

Naso-fronto-ethmoidal complex fractures are infrequently encountered. The authors' approach to the management of the patient with this injury is presented emphasizing the importance of the adoption of a systematic approach to the evaluation of the patient with a maxillofacial injury. The frequency of associated injuries is stressed. The open reduction of this fracture and the use of interosseous fixation is recommended. The importance and technique of repair of the medial canthal ligaments is reviewed as well as the authors' preference for the use of the "open sky" exposure in most patients wi

Extra-axial developmental venous anomalies (DVAs) are important anatomic structures that contribute to supplemental venous drainage of intracranial contents into the extracranial veins. We present the case of a 35-year-old woman with a sudden-onset severe headache, nausea, and vomiting who was found to have an atraumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage of left frontal convexity. Workup revealed a large anomalous extra-axial vein originating in the right frontal area, traversing the left frontal region, penetrating the left frontal bone just above the supraorbital foramen with likely drainage into the …

The surgical intervention for the management of frontal sinusitis is required in a large fraction of patients presenting with this condition. The treatment of choice for the pathology in question is endoscopic endonasal frontotomy. Whenever the endoscopic technique is impossible to employ, the surgeon has to resort to an extranasal operation on the frontal sinus. The indications for the application of such strategy include the pathological conditions complicated by the intracranial and orbital processes, the presence of large benign tumours, recurrent post-surgical purulent sinusitis and traum

OBJECTIVE: To present an alternative surgical option for frontal sinus osteoma.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: A woman presented with a symptomatic large osteoma in right frontal sinus. Two-hole trephination was planned to remove the osteoma using nasal endoscope and a drill in each hole.
RESULTS: The osteoma was drilled and removed transnasally. Two months later, two small fragments of osteoma were detected remaining in the lateral aspect of the sinus. The fragments were removed successfully with the same technique. The patient was asymptomatic six months postoperatively.
CONCLUSION: Two-hole trephi

CONCLUSION: Coverage of the bare frontal bone with the mucosal flap could prevent excessive neo-osteogenesis and keep the neo-ostium open widely.
