A case of pituitary apoplexy, which was initially misdiagnosed as 'acute frontal sinusitis', is reported. The presenting symptoms and signs of the patient were headache, moderate fever, left periorbital edema, marked tenderness over the left frontal sinus and purulent secretion over the left middle turbinate and nasopharynx. These clinical symptoms were wrongly perceived as complicated frontal sinusitis. The CT scan and the elective right carotid angiography showed a pituitary adenoma. Therefore pituitary apoplexy of a preexisting pituitary adenoma was diagnosed. The patient underwent surgical…

Bilateral Osteomyelitis following frontal sinusitis is a rare complication in the antibiotic era. The main risk of a progredient course is mainly the formation of external subperiostal, epidural, subdural abscesses or brain abscesses with potentially life-threatening complications. This is a report on a patient who presented in our department with progredient cephalgia and swelling in the area around the glabella and frontal sinus. Macroscopical examination revealed septum deviation to the right side and nasal polyposis of the right nasal passage. A computed tomography of the paranasal sinuses…

Although there are many reports on the measurement of the paranasal sinuses, few studies examined the development of frontal sinus with three-dimensional computed tomography (CT), especially in children. In this study, we evaluated the normal development of frontal sinus in Asian children, and we also analyzed the height, length, and width of the frontal sinus in Korean adults with three-dimensional CT imaging. We retrospectively reviewed three-dimensional facial bone CT of a total of 352 patients younger than 23 years. The occurrence of the frontal sinus was evaluated by their age. The maxima

Osteomas of the paranasal sinuses are slow-growing, benign tumours most frequently found in the frontal sinus with an incidence that varies from 47% to 80% of the cases; there are often no symptoms and they are diagnosed by chance during an X-ray examination. When there are symptoms, they are usually headaches and ocular or neurological complications. The treatment of choice is surgery. A case of frontal osteoma complicated by frontal sinusitis and by a palpebral abscess is described.

The case of an 87-year old man with widespread prostatic cancer is reported. During the autopsy macroscopically visible metastases were found within the frontal sinuses. These tumor masses destroyed the posterior osseous wall of the frontal sinus and formed polypoid bulging masses. In contrast to the macroscopically unaffected mucous membrane of the sphenoid sinus the maceration specimen of the skull base demonstrated a spongious-mossy, osteoplastic metastasis, lining the sphenoid sinus like a tapestry. This affection started from an exhaustive osteoplastic metastasis within the clivus. No met

Introduction Primary ciliary dyskinesia is a rare inherited disease that results in a malfunction of mucociliary clearance and sinonasal complaints. Aplasia/hypoplasia of the frontal and sphenoid sinuses has been described as more frequent in this population. However, to date, no studies have provided a detailed description of computed tomography findings in adult patients with a diagnosis of this condition. Objective To describe the computed tomography (CT) findings of adult patients with primary ciliary dyskinesia. Methods Retrospective observational study of adult patients with primary c

Ten dromedary heads, aged between 12 and 18 months, were used to study the anatomy of the paranasal sinuses. The main aim of this work is to provide a detailed and comprehensive description of the anatomy of the dromedary paranasal sinuses and associated structures. By combining Computed Tomography (CT) scans and macroscopic anatomical sections, our study aimed to develop a CT atlas, accompanied by a 3D reconstruction of the healthy sinuses. The anatomical study of the dromedary paranasal sinuses was carried out using fenestrations and transverse anatomical sections and allowed us to study the

A 2-year-old Quarter Horse gelding was examined for torticollis, facial protuberances over the frontal and maxillary sinuses, and persistent nasal discharge unresponsive to antibiotics. Radiograph revealed an osseous mass in the right paranasal sinuses. Histologic examination of the biopsied mass led to a diagnosis of osteoma. The mass was removed surgically in sections from the right frontal and maxillary sinuses through separate bone flaps, and sinuses were irrigated with saline solution for 8 days after surgery. Two weeks after surgery, radiography revealed small osseous opacities in the ri

The impact of fronto-orbital advancement (FOA) on frontal sinus development and function is anecdotally variable. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of FOA on development of frontal sinuses, and additionally to identify the complications that might arise out of such procedures. This was a retrospective case-control study. Non-syndromic and syndromic craniosynostosis patients (n = 58) who underwent FOA at an early age and also had a skull radiograph or CT scan after the age of 12 were selected. Age matched trauma patients with CT scans done beyond 12 years of age were used as contro

Since its introduction over 2 decades ago, functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) has revolutionized the surgical management of chronic sinusitis. Performed over 200,000 times annually in the United States to treat medically refractory sinusitis, FESS has success rates as high as 98%. When surgical failure occurs, it is typically due to postoperative scarring or unaddressed outflow tract obstruction in the region of the frontal recess. The most common causes of surgical failure in the frontal recess include remnant frontal recess cells, a retained uncinate process, middle turbinate lateral

Type III frontal recess air cell as a cause of frontal sinus pneumocele has not been previously reported in literature. A 31-year-old woman with chronic history of sinusitis presented with pressure in the left eye on blowing the nose. Computed tomography examination of the orbits and paranasal sinuses with coronal and sagittal reformatted images showed abnormal collection of gas in the soft tissues at the superior aspect of the left orbit contiguous with the overlying left frontal sinus through a large defect in the orbital roof and a type III frontal recess air cell narrowing the left frontal

A 12-year-old girl presented with a swollen right eye with three days of pain and a diffused swollen frontal region and head lasting for one day. On the computed tomography with contrast, diffused collection was detected in the subgaleal regions and subperiosteal of the right orbita. It was observed that she had bilateral maxillary, ethmoidal, and frontal sinusitis and an infected bilateral middle concha bullosa in the right side. No symptoms of intracranial complication and osteomyelitis in the frontal or other calvarial bones were determined. This case presentation is thought to be the first…

Brain abscess is a pyogenic disease secondary to a bacterial, tuberculous, or fungal infection of the brain; thus, early detection and treatment are of crucial importance. Herein, we present a case of a brain abscess arising from dental sinusitis due to an incomplete infection defense mechanism linked to a post-fusion linear skull fracture. The patient initially presented with a persistent headache, which was diagnosed as frontal sinusitis. Consequently, antibiotic treatment was started. However, due to a refractory response to antibiotics, MRI was performed, which revealed a brain abscess in …

BACKGROUND: Hyperostosis is a common consequence of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) and other chronic rhinosinusitis, affecting mainly structures of the ethmoid labyrinth, frontal and maxillary sinuses. These neo-bones are found in advanced stages of rhinosinusitis causes exacerbation because of ostia outflow blockage. Frequent relapses of the disease due to hyperostosis restenosis, represent a problem in the treatment of chronic frontal sinusitis. We report our cases experience about the treatment of frontal chronic sinusitis because of frontoethmoidal area hyperostosis, tre…

An in vivo model was developed to investigate the usability of a frontal sinus and a calvarial bone defect obliteration with bioactive glass S53P4 (BG) and hydroxyapatite (HA) granules. Roofs of 21 Elco rabbit frontal sinuses were drilled open from 4 separate holes using a standard method, and the sinuses, located in pairs, in frontal bone were filled with BG on one side and with HA on the other side. Two parallel posterior defects were covered with a pedicled periosteum flap, and 2 anterior defects with a free flap. The stability of materials, new bone, and connective tissue formation were ob
