Letter and Category Fluency Performance Correlates with Distinct Patterns of Cortical Thickness in Older Adults.

Verbal fluency tasks are generally thought to be mediated by frontal brain regions for letter fluency and temporal regions for category fluency. This idea, however, is primarily based on lesion studies and adapted versions of the fluency tasks in functional neuroimaging, without fundamental evidence from structural neuroimaging in healthy individuals. We investigated the cortical structural correlates of letter and category fluency, including overlapping and different regions, in 505 individuals who participated in a community-based study of healthy aging. The correlation between cortical thic…

Acute effects of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) on resting brain function.

Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) is a potent hallucinogenic substance that was extensively investigated by psychiatrists during the 1950s and 1960s. Researchers were interested in the unique effects induced by this substance, some of which resemble symptoms seen in schizophrenia. Moreover, during that period LSD was studied and used for the treatment of several mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, addiction and personality disorders. Despite this long history of research, how LSD induces its specific effects on a neuronal level has been relatively unclear. In recent years there has be

Mood and neural correlates of excessive daytime sleepiness in Parkinson's disease.

For patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), excessive daytime sleepiness (PD-EDS) is a debilitating non-motor symptom and may be affected by mood symptoms, especially depression and anxiety. Few neuroimaging works have attempted to identify the neural features of PD-EDS, but various findings were reported. The purpose of this study was to systematically review the literature on mood and neuroimaging correlates of PD-EDS. A MEDLINE, PubMed, EMBASE, and PsycInfo search for peer-reviewed original research articles on depression, anxiety, and neuroimaging in PD-EDS identified 26 studies on depress

Clinical translation of neuroimaging research in mood disorders.

BACKGROUND: Practitioners are increasingly presented with data procured from studies employing advanced neuroimaging techniques. The central role that neuroimaging occupies in contemporary psychiatric research highlights the need for practitioner familiarity with the neuroimaging technology and its clinical translation. METHODS: We conducted a PubMed search of all English-language articles published between January 1964 - October 2005. The search words were major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), single-photon-emission computed tomography (SP

Functional speech disorder in a patient with X-linked adrenomyeloneuropathy: a diagnostic challenge.

We describe a 54-year-old female carrier of X-linked adrenomyeloneuropathy presenting with episodic stuttering triggered by mild exertion. Despite pre-existing neurological disease, normal neuroimaging, clinical inconsistency, distractibility, and rapid response to respiratory-based therapy supported a functional speech disorder. This case emphasizes the importance of recognizing functional speech disorders in patients with other comorbid neurological conditions.

Bidirectional causal relationships between plasma proteins, neuroimaging metrics and risk of Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Changes in neuroimaging metrics are among the first detectable pathophysiological alterations in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Proteins are closely linked to fluctuations in neuroimaging metrics. Therefore, the analysis of the proteomic signature associated with neuroimaging metrics holds significant promise for uncovering therapeutic targets that contribute to AD. METHODS: GWAS data concerning the Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDs). The AD cohort comprised a total of 401,661 individuals diagnosed with AD, alongside 10,520 control participants. For a bidirectional MR analysis involvi

A multimodal meta-analysis of gray matter alterations in trigeminal neuralgia.

BACKGROUND: Brain gray matter alterations in patients with trigeminal neuralgia (TN) have been detected in prior neuroimaging studies, but the results are heterogeneous. The current study conducted coordinate-based meta-analyses across neuroimaging studies, aiming to find the pattern of brain anatomic and functional alterations in patients with TN. METHODS: We performed a systematic literature search of PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science to identify relevant publications. A multimodal meta-analysis for whole-brain voxel-based morphometry (VBM) studies and functional imaging studies in TN was

Cortical activation to object shape and speed of motion during the first year.

A great deal is known about the functional organization of cortical networks that mediate visual object processing in the adult. The current research is part of a growing effort to identify the functional maturation of these pathways in the developing brain. The current research used near-infrared spectroscopy to investigate functional activation of the infant cortex during the processing of featural information (shape) and spatiotemporal information (speed of motion) during the first year of life. Our investigation focused on two areas that were implicated in previous studies: anterior tempor

Neuroimaging in eating disorders.

Neuroimaging techniques have been useful tools for accurate investigation of brain structure and function in eating disorders. Computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography, single photon emission computed tomography, magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and voxel-based morphometry have been the most relevant technologies in this regard. The purpose of this review is to update the existing data on neuroimaging in eating disorders. The main brain changes seem to be reversible to some extent after adequate weight restoration. Brain changes in bulimia nervosa seem to b

Integrating evidence from neuroimaging and neuropsychological studies of obsessive-compulsive disorder: the orbitofronto-striatal model revisited.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a common, heritable and disabling neuropsychiatric disorder. Theoretical models suggest that OCD is underpinned by functional and structural abnormalities in orbitofronto-striatal circuits. Evidence from cognitive and neuroimaging studies (functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET)) have generally been taken to be supportive of these theoretical models; however, results from these studies have not been entirely congruent with each other. With the advent of whole brain-based structural imaging techniqu

Neuroimaging of intimate partner violence can underrepresent the most affected survivors.

Neuroimaging is becoming an increasingly prominent tool to understand intimate partner violence (IPV) and partner-inflicted brain injury (BI). Yet, by nature of IPV and partner-inflicted BI, those most affected may be the least likely to be eligible, participate, and produce usable data in neuroimaging studies. A critical question therefore remains of who is represented in neuroimaging research on IPV and related BI. Here, we examined representativeness at three major stages of neuroimaging sample construction using screening records from 352 women and a subsequent cohort of 207 enrolled women

Bridging the gap: Translating fetal, infant, and toddler neuroimaging insights into clinical practice.

Over the past decade, fetal, infant, and toddler (FIT) neuroimaging has become a rapidly expanding field, driven by advances in technology and computational methods. By providing non-invasive ways to explore the developing brain in both typical and pathological development, FIT neuroimaging holds promise for advancing pediatric medicine. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasonography, and electroencephalography (EEG) are regularly used in clinical practice to identify or rule out structural brain abnormalities; monitor the timing and evolution of brain injuries; assess brain growth and matu

Neuroimaging-driven recommendation systems for personalized sports training and injury prevention.

Neuroimaging has become an essential tool in sports science, offering profound insights into brain function, cognitive-motor interactions, and injury mechanisms. Traditional neuroimaging techniques, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), electroencephalography (EEG), and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), have significantly contributed to our understanding of brain plasticity and its role in athletic performance. However, these conventional approaches often face challenges, including low temporal resolution, sensitivity to motion artifacts, and difficulties in translating controlle

Structural Neuroimaging Alterations in Primary Burning Mouth Syndrome: A Seed-Based d Mapping (SDM-PSI) Meta-Analysis.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Primary burning mouth syndrome (pBMS) is a chronic orofacial pain disorder characterized by persistent oral burning sensations with clinically normal oral mucosa, frequently accompanied by comorbid psychological distress and impaired quality of life. The underlying neurobiological mechanisms of pBMS remain poorly elucidated, and existing structural neuroimaging studies have yielded inconsistent brain morphological findings. This study aimed to conduct a quantitative structural neuroimaging meta-analysis via seed-based d mapping to identify consistent grey matter alterati

Enhancing brain tumor surgery precision with multimodal connectome imaging: Structural and functional connectivity in language-dominant areas.

OBJECTIVES: Language is a critical aspect of human cognition and function, and its preservation is a priority for neurosurgical interventions in the left frontal operculum. However, identification of language areas can be inconsistent, even with electrical mapping. The use of multimodal structural and functional neuroimaging in conjunction with intraoperative neuromonitoring may augment cortical language area identification to guide the resection of left frontal opercular lesions. METHODS: Structural and functional connectome scans were generated using a machine learning software to reparcell…

Advances in the neuroimaging of motor disorders.

Neuroimaging is a valuable adjunct to the history and examination in the evaluation of motor system disorders. Conventional imaging with computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging depicts important anatomic information and helps to identify imaging patterns which may support diagnosis of a specific motor disorder. Advanced imaging techniques can provide further detail regarding volume, functional, or metabolic changes occurring in nervous system pathology. This chapter is an overview of the advances in neuroimaging with particular emphasis on both standard and less well-known advanced i

Verb generation in patients with focal frontal lesions: a neuropsychological test of neuroimaging findings.

What are the neural bases of semantic memory? Traditional beliefs that the temporal lobes subserve the retrieval of semantic knowledge, arising from lesion studies, have been recently called into question by functional neuroimaging studies finding correlations between semantic retrieval and activity in left prefrontal cortex. Has neuroimaging taught us something new about the neural bases of cognition that older methods could not reveal or has it merely identified brain activity that is correlated with but not causally related to the process of semantic retrieval? We examined the ability of pa…
