Effect of carbon chain length on the hydrolysis and transport characteristics of alkyl gallates in rat intestine.

Phenolipids such as alkyl gallates (A-GAs) have been approved by food industry as non-toxic antioxidant additives. However, their digestion and absorption mechanisms in the intestine have not yet been clarified. In this research, the hydrolysis and transport characteristics of A-GAs with fatty alcohols of various chain lengths (C1:0, C2:0, C3:0, C4:0, C8:0, C12:0 and C16:0) were estimated by the everted-rat-gut-sac model (ERGSM) for the first time. High-performance liquid chromatography measurements proved that measurable peaks corresponding to methyl gallate (G-C1:0), ethyl gallate (G-C2:0),

Effect of methyl gallate on immune response of Biomphalaria alexandrina (Ehrenberg, 1831) snails to infection with Schistosoma mansoni (Sambon, 1907).

Schistosomiasis still affects a lot of people in many developing countries. Reducing the disease dissemination has been the target of various studies. As methyl gallate has antioxidant properties, it is assumed that it can be a good candidate for stimulating the immune response of snails. So, the aim of this work is to investigate the potential of using methyl gallate as an immunostimulant to Biomphalaria alexandrina snails in order to prevent the development of invading miracidia into infective cercariae. The infected snails were exposed to three concentrations of methyl gallate for two perio

Syringic acid delivered via mPEG-PLGA-PLL nanoparticles enhances peripheral nerve regeneration effect.

Aim: To deliver syringic acid (SA) with a nanocarrier and enhance its function. Materials & methods: mPEG-PLGA-PLL (PEAL) nanoparticles were used to deliver SA. The characterization, storage stability, drug release, blood-compatibility and biocompatibility of SA-PEAL were detected by in vitro and in vivo assays. Cellular phenotypic experiments and rat sciatic nerve injury models were used to evaluate the function of SA-PEALs. Results: SA-PEAL had good storage stability, blood-compatibility and biocompatibility and could slowly release SA. SA-PEAL significantly enhanced the proliferation and mi

Obtaining biobleached eucalyptus cellulose fibres by using various enzyme combinations.

Various combinations of laccases, xylanase and cellulase were used to biobleach cellulose fibres from eucalyptus. The Trametes villosa and Myceliophthora thermophila laccases were used in combination with violuric acid (VA(TvL) system) and methyl syringate (MeS(MtL) system), respectively, as mediator. A dissimilar mode of action of the two systems was found: the VA(TvL) treatment released both hexenuronic acids and lignin, whereas the MeS(MtL) released lignin alone. Pulp properties were further improved by applying the mediator before the enzyme during treatment. Pulp properties comparable to

Extrusion-formed starch-phenolic acid complexes: Physico-chemical properties and in vitro digestibility.

Extrusion processing was employed to prepare starch-phenolic acid complexes using three starch types (A-type corn, B-type potato, and C-type pea) and two phenolic acids (ferulic acid, FA; gallic acid, GA). The resulting complexes exhibited high complex indices (65.73-96.83%), with corn starch showing superior complexation ability and GA demonstrating higher inclusion efficiency. Structural analyses (XRD, FTIR) confirmed the formation of V-type crystalline structures with enhanced short-range order, and TGA indicated improved thermal stability. Molecular docking revealed that hydrogen bonding a…

Instant controlled pressure drop processing modulates phenolic composition and fatty acid profile in Amaranthus hypochondriacus grain.

Instant Controlled Pressure Drop (DIC) is a high-pressure/short-time thermo-mechanical pretreatment that can expand grain structure and improve phytochemical accessibility. This study assessed how DIC conditions (0.10-0.40 MPa/10-90 s) modulate phenolic composition and lipid fingerprints in two Amaranthus hypochondriacus grain varieties ("Criollo" and "Laura") using a 13-run central composite design. Ethanolic extracts were profiled by HPLC, while GC-MS characterized the extracted oils. HPLC identified gallic acid, catechin, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, ellagic acid, trans-4-hydroxycinnamic acid, qu…

Phenolic acid-functionalized and loaded electrospun nanofibers: Innovations in active and multifunctional food packaging.

The growing demand for sustainable food packaging has driven innovation in electrospun nanofibers integrated with bioactive phenolic acids. This review highlights the pivotal role of phenolic acids-such as tannic acid, gallic acid, and tea polyphenols-in enhancing the functionality of biodegradable polymer matrices (e.g., PLA, PVA, chitosan) made from electrospun nanofibers. These compounds improve mechanical strength, thermal stability, and barrier properties through hydrogen bonding and covalent interactions, while their antioxidant and antimicrobial activities effectively combat oxidative s…

Ethyl acetate fraction of Striga hermonthica (Delile) Benth. inhibits AGEs-mediated inflammatory markers in THP-1 monocytes.

The present study investigated the antiglycation activities of extracts and fractions of Phyllanthus amarus, Chrysanthellum americanum, Striga hermonthica and, based on cytotoxicity results, evaluated the anti-inflammatory potential of the ethyl acetate fraction of Striga hermonthica (EtOAc-Sh) in AGE-challenged THP-1 monocytes. Galloyl-RGD induces oxidative stress-mediated apoptosis in human melanoma cells.

Melanoma is a malignant tumor arising from melanocytes and is characterized by rapid metastasis, making it the most aggressive form of skin cancer. Galloyl-RGD is a novel compound that combines gallic acid with RGD (Arg-Gly-Asp) tripeptide motif to overcome the problems associated with gallic acid, such as instability at high temperatures and low solubility. Although Galloyl-RGD has been previously investigated for its biological stability, regulation of melanin production, and anti-photoaging effects, its potential anticancer activity has not been clearly elucidated. In this study, proteomic …

Interaction of Red Cabbage Extract with Exogenous Antioxidants in ORAC Assay.

Understanding interactions between antioxidants is crucial since in biological and food matrices, we are dealing with complex multi-component antioxidant systems. This study aimed to quantitatively characterize interactions of antioxidants in anthocyanin-rich aqueous red cabbage extract with several natural (ascorbic acid, gallic acid, and glutathione) and synthetic (Trolox and TEMPOL) antioxidants and to determine their synergistic or antagonistic nature in the ORAC assay. Four parameters derivable from the ORAC assay (extent of fluorescence protection, lag time, fluorescence half-life t1/2, …

Comparison of natural organic acids and synthetic chelates at enhancing phytoextraction of metals from a multi-metal contaminated soil.

Chemically assisted phytoremediation has been developing to induce accumulation of metals by high biomass plants. Synthetic chelates have shown high effectiveness to reach such a goal, but they pose serious drawbacks in field application due to the excessive amount of metals solubilized. We compared the performance of synthetic chelates with naturally occurring low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOA) in enhancing phytoextraction of metals by Indian mustard (Brassica juncea) from multi-metal contaminated soils. Gallic and citric acids were able to induce removal of Cd, Zn, Cu, and Ni from so
