Reduced visual cortex gray matter volume and thickness in young adults who witnessed domestic violence during childhood.

Exposure to interparental violence is associated with negative outcomes, such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and reduced cognitive abilities. However, little is known about the potential effects of witnessing domestic violence during childhood on gray matter volume (GMV) or cortical thickness. High-resolution 3.0 T volumetric scans (Siemens Trio Scanner) were obtained on 52 subjects (18-25 years) including 22 (6 males/16 females) with a history of visually witnessing episodes of domestic violence, and 30 (8 males/22 females) unexposed control subjects, with neither a current nor

Women with safety concerns report fewer gender-specific preventive healthcare services.

BACKGROUND: Violence and safety exposures, primarily in the form of intimate partner violence (IPV) exposures, have been associated with increased healthcare utilization in women and variable associations with preventive services. It remains unknown, however, if broader measures of violence and safety exposures are associated with preventive healthcare utilization. METHODS: Data from the 2004 The Philadelphia Health Management Corporation survey were used to compare self-reported utilization of preventive healthcare services for participants who did and did not report exposures to violence or

Gay men and intimate partner violence: a gender analysis.

Though intimate partner violence (IPV) is predominately understood as a women's health issue most often emerging within heterosexual relationships, there is increasing recognition of the existence of male victims of IPV. In this qualitative study we explored connections between masculinities and IPV among gay men. The findings show how recognising IPV was based on an array of participant experiences, including the emotional, physical and sexual abuse inflicted by their partner, which in turn led to three processes. Normalising and concealing violence referred to the participants' complicity in

Sex worker health: San Francisco style.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the characteristics of sex workers accessing care at a peer based clinic in San Francisco and to evaluate predictors of sexually transmitted infections (STI). METHODS: We conducted an observational study of sex workers at St James Infirmary. Individuals underwent an initial questionnaire, and we offered screening for STI at each clinic visit. We performed univariate, bivariate, and multivariable analyses to assess for predictors of STI in this population. RESULTS: We saw 783 sex workers identifying as female (53.6%), male (23.9%), male to female transgender (16.1%), a

Using the Theoretical Framework of Acceptability for qualitative assessment of the "COMBAT" VAW intervention in Ghana.

Violence against women (VAW) is a global health problem, which leads to negative sexual, reproductive, mental and physical health outcomes, as well as death in extreme cases. Globally, over 35% of women are reported to have experienced some form of violence, while in Ghana, 37% of women have ever experienced physical violence. Considering that the sustainability of community-based VAW interventions is largely dependent on ownership, this study used the Theoretical Framework of Acceptability (TFA) to assess the COMBAT (Community Based Action Teams) intervention (for example, ethicality, self-ef

Patterns of intimate partner violence against women in Europe: prevalence and associated risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a complex phenomenon and some research suggests that there are qualitatively distinct IPV types. However, little is known about the risk factors associated with different IPV types. METHODS: Data from Violence against women: an European Union (EU)-wide survey, conducted by the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights was used. Latent class analysis (LCA) was employed to identify distinct IPV patterns based on the intensity of eight forms of violence by current partners (n=30 675). Multilevel multinomial logistic regression was used to examine individual

"Be the Dream Queen": Gender Performativity, Femininity, and Transgender Sex Workers in China.

An under-researched aspect of transgender sex workers in China pertains to their desires and expressions of femininity. Male-to-Female (MTF) transgender sex workers are a high-risk population prone to depression and stress regarding body image, intimate relationships marked by violence, and social stigma, rendering them vulnerable to hate crimes and discrimination. Ethnographic data from in-depth interviews with 49 MTF transgender sex workers indicate that sex, gender and feminine desire are mutable in the construction of self and subjectivity. This study uses the conceptual framework of gende

Intimate Partner Violence and Mental Health Problems in Married Women in Rural Central India: A Community-based Cross-sectional Study.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant social issue affecting women in rural India, with deleterious consequences for their physical and mental health. The "mental health problems and psychosocial factors associated with IPV" is an under-researched topic in Central India. The cross-sectional observational descriptive study was part of a project aimed at strengthening the health sector response to gender-based violence. Eighty consenting women from 19 villages in a district in Central India, who acknowledged experiencing IPV, participated in the study. A predesigned and pretested soci…

Women and addiction: a trauma-informed approach.

Historically, substance abuse treatment has developed as a single-focused intervention based on the needs of addicted men. Counselors focused only on the addiction and assumed that other issues would either resolve themselves through recovery or would be dealt with by another helping professional at a later time. However, treatment for women's addictions is apt to be ineffective unless it acknowledges the realities of women's lives, which include the high prevalence of violence and other types of abuse. A history of being abused increases the likelihood that a woman will abuse alcohol and othe

Hazards of stigma: the sexual and physical abuse of gay, lesbian, and bisexual adolescents in the United States and Canada.

Some studies suggest lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) teens are at higher risk than peers for violence at home, in school, and in the community. That can bring them into the child welfare system or services for runaway and homeless teens. This study compared self-reported experiences of sexual and physical abuse based on sexual orientation and gender in seven population-based surveys of youth. The authors used c2 and age-adjusted odds of abuse to compare bisexual to heterosexual, mostly heterosexual, and gay and lesbian students. They also provide case studies to illustrate the experiences of

A population-based study of homelessness, antisocial behaviour and violence victimisation among young adults in Victoria, Australia.

Homeless young adults are at increased risk for contact with the police and are overrepresented in the justice system. This study explored associations between homelessness, antisocial behaviour and violence victimisation using longitudinal panel data gathered through young adulthood. Data were drawn from a state representative population-based sample of young adults from Victoria, Australia participating in the International Youth Development Study (IYDS; n = 2884, 54% female). Participants were surveyed at age 21 years, with follow-up at ages 23 and 25 years. We examined changes in the preva

Package of interventions for harm reduction among women who inject drugs in Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION: Women who inject drugs (WID) in Nigeria face significant barriers to harm reduction services, including punitive policies, stigma, and gender-based violence, which increase their risk of HIV and hepatitis. This study presents proposed intervention models aimed at enhancing harm reduction services for WID in Nigeria. METHODOLOGY: This study employed a human-centered design approach to develop interventions for WID in Nigeria. The resulting intervention models were informed by qualitative assessments and stakeholder engagement, and were aligned with national health policies. RESULT…

Intimate partner violence, reproductive health outcomes, and responsiveness among women living with disabilities in Southern Ethiopia: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a major public health concern that disproportionately affects women with disabilities. While studies have identified factors associated with IPV, there is limited documentation on its impact among women with disabilities in Ethiopia. This gap hinders the development of targeted interventions. This study aimed to explore the impact of IPV on women with disabilities, focusing on the intersection of gender, disability, and reproductive health outcomes, as well as the responsiveness of services in Southern Ethiopia. METHODS: A community-based ethnogr

Will words ever harm me?: escalation from verbal to physical abuse in sixth-grade classrooms.

Based on in-depth qualitative interviews, this article gives the opportunity to 145 sixth graders to tell, in their own words, how they felt and reacted when verbally and emotionally abused by their classmates. Content analysis of interviews revealed gender differences in students' reactions to verbal aggression. Another interesting finding was the differentiation between verbally aggressive messages meant to be for fun from those that were not so meant based on (1) contextual cues, (2) other peers' reaction, and (3) the malleability of the personal features that were the topic of the attack.

Addressing obstetric violence: a scoping review of interventions in healthcare and their impact on maternal care quality.

BACKGROUND: The mistreatment and abuse of women during childbirth have been recognized as a major global health challenge, impeding facility-based delivery and contributing to the high maternal mortalities globally. The World Health Organization has specifically called for interventions to deal with obstetric violence. This scoping review consolidates the existing literature on interventions aimed at reducing obstetric violence and synthesizes existing knowledge on their impact in promoting respectful maternity care. METHODOLOGY: Thirteen electronic databases were searched for relevant articl

Educational Disruption, School Dropout, and Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) Outcomes Among Adolescent Girls and Young Women in South Africa.

Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in South Africa continue to experience high rates of HIV, early pregnancy, and gender-based violence (GBV). While schooling is widely recognised as protective, most studies conceptualise educational participation as a binary exposure, overlooking variation in absenteeism and school dropout. This study examined whether school dropout and varying levels of absenteeism were associated with HIV status, early pregnancy, contraceptive use, intimate partner violence (IPV), and non-partner sexual violence among AGYW in South Africa. Data were drawn from the HERS…

eYoung men's experiences of violence and poverty and the relationship to sexually transmissible HIV: a cross sectional study from rural South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Young (ages 18-35 years) men are inadequately engaged in HIV prevention and treatment globally, including in South Africa, increasing the likelihood of them having sexually transmissible HIV (i.e. living with HIV but with high viral loads). We sought to understand how men's experiences of poverty and violence, impacted on transmissible HIV, directly or indirectly via mental health and substance misuse. SETTING: Rural communities in northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. METHODS: Cross-sectional population-based random selection (September 2018-June 2019), assessing transmissible H
