PURPOSE OF REVIEW: An update on heritable eye disease will allow informed patient counseling and improved patient care.
RECENT FINDINGS: New loci and genes have been associated with identifiable heritable ocular traits. Molecular genetic analysis is available for many of these genes either as part of research or for clinical testing. The advent of gene array technologies has enabled screening of samples for known mutations in genes linked to various disorders. Exomic sequencing has proven to be particularly successful in research protocols in identifying the genetic causation of rare genetic

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) has emerged as a valuable vertebrate model organism widely used in biological and biomedical research due to its rapid embryonic development, optical transparency, high fecundity, and genetic similarity to humans. These characteristics have made zebrafish an important experimental model in developmental biology, toxicology, cancer research, and particularly in the investigation of neurodegenerative diseases. A significant proportion of human genes have functional counterparts in zebrafish, allowing researchers to explore disease mechanisms and genetic pathways relevant

The need for more diversity in research is a widely recognized problem, especially in the genetics and genomics fields. While resolving this problem seems straightforward by recruiting and sequencing research participants from underrepresented populations, implementing an effort like this is complex operationally. Key considerations include ensuring equity, building capacity, and creating a sustainable research collective that works collaboratively to address local and global questions in research. Here, we provide a roadmap detailing how the Global Parkinson's Genetics Program (GP2) is tackli

Aedes aegypti is the primary vector of yellow fever (YF) and dengue fever (DF) flaviviruses worldwide. In this review we focus on past and present research on genetic components and environmental factors in Aedes aegypti that appear to control flavivirus transmission. We review genetic relationships among Ae. aegypti populations throughout the world and discuss how variation in vector competence is correlated with overall genetic differences among populations. We describe current research into how genetic and environmental factors jointly affect distribution of vector competence in natural pop

Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM®), an online catalog of human genes and genetic disorders, has been used in the low- and middle-income countries largely as a tool for improving clinical care, teaching genetics and genomics, and for clinical and research analysis of next-generation sequencing. By facilitating free access to curated, updated, and comprehensive information in genetics and genomics, OMIM has led to better clinical care and research advancement in countries where clinicians and researchers in private or public hospitals and universities cannot afford to pay for other reso

The underlying pathologies of psychiatric disorders, which cause substantial personal and social losses, remain unknown, and their elucidation is an urgent issue. To clarify the core pathological mechanisms underlying psychiatric disorders, in addition to laboratory-based research that incorporates the latest findings, it is necessary to conduct large-sample-size research and verify reproducibility. For this purpose, it is critical to conduct multicenter collaborative research across various fields, such as psychiatry, neuroscience, molecular biology, genomics, neuroimaging, cognitive science,

Developmental dyslexia has until recently been considered to belong solely in the domain of educational psychology. With the advent of better theories on language and reading, and better methods for assessing the structure and function of living human brains and for determining genetic transmission, dyslexia is now poised to become a focal concern of cognitive neuroscience and genetic research. Recent findings from neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, neuropsychology, and genetics research are reviewed.

This article presents an overview of some methods and results from our continuing studies of genetic and environmental influences on dyslexia, and on individual differences across the normal range that have been conducted over the past 25 years in the Colorado Learning Disabilities Research Center (CLDRC) and in related projects. CLDRC investigators compare the similarities of identical twin pairs who share all their genes and fraternal twins who share half their segregating genes to assess the balance of genetic, shared family environment, and nonshared environment influences on dyslexia and

PURPOSE: Genomic testing informs treatment decisions for estrogen receptor-positive, progesterone receptor-positive, and HER2-negative early-stage breast cancer, yet uptake remains disproportionately low among racially and ethnically minoritized and low-income populations. Understanding the multilevel barriers driving these disparities is essential for equitable delivery of personalized cancer care. This study explores barriers to and potential solutions for equitable access to genomic testing, incorporating perspectives from patients, caregivers, clinicians, navigators, payers, and policymake

OBJECTIVE: Men with a family history of prostate cancer (PCa) or a pathogenic germline variant (PGV) face increased PCa risk. However, structured PCa early detection and insights into the experiences of affected men remain limited. This qualitative analysis explored (i) why men with familial or genetic PCa risk attended a risk-adapted prevention clinic, (ii) which elements they found helpful, and (iii) how early detection services could be tailored to their needs.
METHODS: This study was part of the psychosocial mixed-methods study ProFam-Psych, run alongside the ProFam-Risk prevention clinic

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Genetic factors contribute to the etiology of anorexia nervosa (AN). This review synthesizes the current state of knowledge about the genetic etiology of AN, provides directions for future research, and discusses clinical implications for this research.
RECENT FINDINGS: Candidate gene meta-analyses indicate serotonin genes may be involved in the genetic etiology of AN. Three genome-wide association studies have been conducted and one genome-wide significant locus was identified. Cross-disorder analyses suggest shared genetic risk between AN and several psychiatric, educatio

Fibromyalgia, characterized by chronic widespread pain and fatigue, involves complex interactions between genetic predispositions and environmental triggers. This review delves into the multifaceted nature of fibromyalgia, emphasizing recent advances in understanding its pathogenesis through genetic, epigenetic, and environmental lenses. We explore the roles of specific genetic polymorphisms, such as those in the catechol-O-methyltransferase and serotonin transporter genes, and their correlation with the syndrome's susceptibility. The review also examines the significant impact of environmenta

Due to the high prevalence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in adults with Down syndrome (DS), trisomy 21 is now considered a genetic form of AD (DSAD). A better understanding of factors that can prevent or delay AD is vital to improve outcomes for adults with DS. In this narrative review, we apply AD and cognitive aging research frameworks to study resistance and resilience in DSAD. Given the variability in the timing of pathology and symptoms, we discuss the evidence supporting the role of genetic, biological, socio-behavioral, lifestyle, and environmental factors in resistance and resilience to

Rheumatic diseases offer distinct challenges to researchers because of heterogeneity in disease phenotypes, low disease incidence, and geographic variation in genetic and environmental factors. Emerging research areas, including epigenetics, metabolomics, and the microbiome, may provide additional links between genetic and environmental risk factors in the pathogenesis of rheumatic disease. This article reviews the methods used to establish genetic and environmental risk factors and studies gene-environment interactions in rheumatic diseases, and provides specific examples of successes and cha

Genetic counsellors have been working in some European countries for at least 30 years. Although there are great disparities between the numbers, education, practice and acceptance of these professionals across Europe, it is evident that genetic counsellors and genetic nurses in Europe are working autonomously within teams to deliver patient care. The aim of this study was to use the Delphi research method to develop a core curriculum to guide the educational preparation of these professionals in Europe. The Delphi method enables the researcher to utilise the views and opinions of a group of r
