Cortical and subcortical contributions to ideomotor apraxia: analysis of task demands and error types.

Ideomotor apraxia (IMA) is often associated with damage of the dominant parietal cortex, but many other lesion sites have been implicated su … ons. The cortical patients presented with deficits in the production of transitive and intransitive gestures-to-verbal command and imitation, as well as impaired gesture discrimination. In contrast, the subcortical group demonstrated mild production-execution deficits for transitive pantomimes, but normal imitation and discrimination. Qualitative error ana …

Hand kinematics, high-density sEMG comprising forearm and far-field potentials for motion intent recognition.

Surface electromyography (sEMG) signals reflect spinal motor neuron activities, and can be used as intuitive inputs for human-machine intera … ger flexion forces. This dataset contains muscle activities of 21 subjects while performing 20 hand gestures, and 9 individual or combined finger flexion under two force levels. The usabilities of HD sEMG for hand gesture recognition, finger angle and force prediction were validated. The proposed database allows a comprehensive extraction of the neural dri …

Real-Time Robotic Presentation Skill Scoring Using Multi-Model Analysis and Fuzzy Delphi-Analytic Hierarchy Process.

Existing methods for scoring student presentations predominantly rely on computer-based implementations and do not incorporate a robotic multi-classification model. This limitation can result in potential misclassification issues as these approaches lack active feature learning capabilities due to fixed camera positions. Moreover, these scoring methods often solely focus on facial expressions and neglect other crucial factors, such as eye contact, hand gestures and body movements, thereby leading to potential biases or inaccuracies in scoring. To address these limitations, this study introduce…

Brain abnormalities underlying limb apraxia in corticobasal degeneration: an fMRI study.

Corticobasal degeneration is a neurodegenerative disease characterized, by cortical dysfunction and extrapyramidal signs. The most consistent symptom is a unilateral limb apraxia, which consists of an isolated disorder of gestural production involving primarily the upper limb. The objective of this study is to investigate the functional abnormalities that may underlie motor dysfunction, and those which might correlate to the severity of limb apraxia.

Is "Intrinsic Vowel Duration" Bio-Mechanical or More? Preliminary Results from Northwestern Italian.

A well-known property of vowel duration is that it tends to be mediated by vowel height: higher vowels are usually shorter than lower vowels (aka "intrinsic vowel duration"). Results from previous work on a limited number of languages suggest two possible scenarios: (A) vowel duration is entirely driven by the duration of the gesture necessary to reach the tongue height target of the specific vowel, (B) vowel duration targets are part of the cognitive representation of the vowel. However, a third scenario has been put forward theoretically: (C) the duration of the vocalic gesture partially det

Bioinspired Electrostatic-Field Perturbated Sensing for General Material Noncontact Perception.

Noncontact sensing is essential for smart manufacturing and safe human-machine interaction, yet existing proximity and inspection sensors are often limited by material selectivity, ambient light, and continuous power consumption. Here, we report a bioinspired electrostatic-field sensor that implements a solid-state analogue of electrolocation using a corona-polarized fluoropolymer electret. The pre-charged electret establishes a quasi-static electric field, and nearby objects reshape this field to induce measurable potential modulation on a grounded electrode, enabling friction-free sensing wi

User Needs and Preferences for Multimodal Interaction in Social Robots for Later-Life Support: An Exploratory Survey and Conceptual Five-Layer Architecture.

Social robots hold promise for enhancing later-life support, but user needs and preferences for multimodal interaction modalities remain underexplored. This study explores awareness, willingness, perceived barriers, and modality-function associations across multiple interaction modalities among middle-aged and older adults, and proposes a conceptual five-layer architecture for design guidance. A questionnaire survey with 199 Chinese respondents (aged 45-64: 89.4%, 65+: 10.6%) examined perceptions of voice, visual, gestural, affective, sEMG, and brain-computer interface interactions. Voice and

Fingerprint-Inspired Recyclable Electronic Skin for Non-Contact Urinary Incontinence Monitoring and Sensing.

The development of high-performance flexible electronics faces a fundamental challenge: balancing sophisticated multimodal sensing and end-of-life environmental sustainability. Drawing inspiration from the human fingerprint, we present a microelectronic-printing-based arch-shaped sensor that resolves this conflict by integrating dual-mode (contact/non-contact) sensing with inherently recyclable components. The device, fabricated through high-resolution printing of liquid metal circuits (with line widths below 200 μm) on functionally tailored substrates, exhibits a sensitivity of 3.07 kPa-1 and

Kinect system in home-based cardiovascular rehabilitation.

Cardiovascular diseases lead to a high consumption of financial resources. An important part of the recovery process is the cardiovascular rehabilitation. This study aimed to present a new cardiovascular rehabilitation system to 11 outpatients with coronary artery disease from a Hospital in Porto, Portugal, later collecting their opinions. This system is based on a virtual reality game system, using the Kinect sensor while performing an exercise protocol which is integrated in a home-based cardiovascular rehabilitation programme, with a duration of 6 months and at the maintenance phase. Praxis performance with left versus right hemisphere lesions.

Praxis is defined as skilled, purposive limb movement. While it has been a consistent finding that lesions of the left cerebral hemisphere result in significantly worse performance on praxis testing than lesions of the right cerebral hemisphere, recently some investigators have proposed that the right hemisphere may also play an important role in mediating praxis. To learn if the right hemisphere does have a role in praxis we studied right-handed patients with right or left hemisphere lesions, as well as right-handed normal controls who were matched for age and education. Two trained raters sc

[Targets of the memorized position and visual contexts].

The goal of this study was to determine whether a sensorimotor or cognitive encoding is used to encode a target position and save it into iconic memory. The methodology consisted of disrupting a manual aiming movement to a memorized visual target by displacing the visual field containing the target. The nature of the encoding was inferred from the nature and the size of the errors relative to a control. The target was presented either centrally or in the right periphery. Participants moved their hand from the left to the right of fixation. Black and white vertical stripes covered the whole vis

[Parkinson disease and communication].

Communication abilities imply multifactorial analysis. These disorders in Parkinson's disease involve speech, graphism, functional and paraverbal gestures. The patient's isolation in a major form of disease is dramatic. Functional study requires an analysis of each factor; progress should be realized for an objective approach. With a therapeutic objective in view, the most impaired features, and the patients real situation and way of life must be evaluated. Some training measures are useful especially for social adjustment and motivational reinforcement.

Intraoperative three-dimensional correction during rod rotation technique.

STUDY DESIGN: A numerical study was conducted by simulating the Cotrel-Dubousset (CD) surgery. OBJECTIVE: To quantify intraoperative correction during CD surgery. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Very few methods have been reported in literature to analyze the effect of intraoperative surgical gestures, and none considers the three-dimensional correction of the entire spine during the main surgical gestures. Intraoperative frontal radiographs limit analysis to two-dimensional correction, and movement tracking devices focus the kinematics study of specific vertebrae in the instrumented area only. …

Contact-Induced Grammaticalization in Turkish Sign Language: From Mouthings to Grammatical Markers.

This study investigates the contact-induced grammaticalization of the Turkish existential mouthing /var/ ("there is") in Turkish Sign Langua … ssession. These findings problematize the rigid theoretical distinction between mouthings and mouth gestures, demonstrating that spoken lexical items can be scavenged, eroded, and nativized into the visual grammar of a sign language, effectively expanding current models of grammaticalization.
