Global trends in neglected tropical disease control and elimination: impact on child health.

The neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a group of 17 lesser known chronic infections which predominantly affect poor and disenfranchised communities. There are a number of NTDs that cause significant global morbidity in children, including the three major soil transmitted helminth (STH) infections (ascariasis, trichuriasis and hookworm infection), schistosomiasis and trachoma. These NTDs, together with lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis, are currently being targeted for global control and elimination through mass drug administration (MDA) campaigns. They represent the most common NTDs

Global asthma prevalence in adults: findings from the cross-sectional world health survey.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is a major cause of disability, health resource utilization and poor quality of life world-wide. We set out to generate estimates of the global burden of asthma in adults, which may inform the development of strategies to address this common disease. METHODS: The World Health Survey (WHS) was developed and implemented by the World Health Organization in 2002-2003. A total of 178,215 individuals from 70 countries aged 18 to 45 years responded to questions related to asthma and related symptoms. The prevalence of asthma was based on responses to questions relating to self-rep

Global mesothelioma deaths reported to the World Health Organization between 1994 and 2008.

OBJECTIVE: To carry out a descriptive analysis of mesothelioma deaths reported worldwide between 1994 and 2008. METHODS: We extracted data on mesothelioma deaths reported to the World Health Organization mortality database since 1994, when the disease was first recorded. We also sought information from other English-language sources. Crude and age-adjusted mortality rates were calculated and mortality trends were assessed from the annual percentage change in the age-adjusted mortality rate. FINDINGS: In total, 92,253 mesothelioma deaths were reported by 83 countries. Crude and age-adjusted m

Global lung health: the colliding epidemics of tuberculosis, tobacco smoking, HIV and COPD.

Tuberculosis (TB), smoking, HIV and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are burgeoning epidemics in developing countries. The link between TB and HIV is well established. Less well recognised is the strong relationship between tobacco smoking and the development and natural history of TB. These associations are of considerable relevance to public health and disease outcomes in individuals with TB. Moreover, tobacco smoking, a modifiable risk factor, is associated with poorer outcomes in HIV-associated opportunistic infections, of which TB is the commonest in developing countries. It i

Meth/amphetamine use and associated HIV: Implications for global policy and public health.

Amphetamine type stimulants (ATS) have become the focus of increasing attention worldwide. There are understandable concerns over potential harms including the transmission of HIV. However, there have been no previous global reviews of the extent to which these drugs are injected or levels of HIV among users. A comprehensive search of the international peer-reviewed and grey literature was undertaken. Multiple electronic databases were searched and documents and datasets were provided by UN agencies and key experts from around the world in response to requests for information on the epidemiolo

Yoga and Tai chi: a cross-cultural comparative study of health benefits, cultural sustainability, and global public health implications.

BACKGROUND: The escalating burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) demands cross-culturally adaptive interventions. Yoga (India) and Tai … hs in institutional norms and community-based public provision. This study advocates that effective global health governance should avoid a single model and instead construct a contextualized hybrid framework. By selectively integrating the advantages of both approaches based on specific socio-cultural contexts and health system needs, we can simultaneously ens …

Association Between Mental Health Disorders in Age-Related Macular Degeneration: A Cohort Study Using a Global Health Records Network.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: This study assessed risk of mental health disorders in patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data were obtained from an aggregated electronic health records database. Patients who were diagnosed with AMD with cataract were propensity score-matched with cataract controls. Diagnoses were identified using International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10) codes. Subgroup analyses evaluated relative risk (RR) of new diagnoses of mental health disorders among patients with dry AMD, neovascular AMD (nAMD), vision impairme

Sentinel Physicians for the Environment: A Chilean Perspective to Address Global Health and Climate Resilience.

Climate change and environmental degradation are intensifying health risks across Latin America, placing increasing pressure on primary health care (PHC) systems. Physicians working at community level are often the first to observe climate- and environment-related health effects, yet operational models that link clinical practice, environmental surveillance and community engagement remain insufficiently defined. This article adopts a policy-oriented narrative synthesis approach, drawing on peer-reviewed literature, policy documents, institutional records, memoranda of understanding, and output

Slow public health: a temporal-relational framework for migration and aging in the Global South.

Population aging and migration represent two of the most profound demographic transformations shaping the Global South. Conventional public health approaches have typically relied on standardized interventions and measurable outcomes, yet such frameworks often fail to capture the temporal, relational, and contextual dimensions affecting aging populations. This perspective introduces "Slow Public Health" as a temporal-relational framework for public health practice in migration and aging contexts. Building on the Slow Movement, Slow Medicine, life-course thinking, and asset-based community deve

Health Systems Strengthening to Promote Access to Care for Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Diseases Globally.

Musculoskeletal health is essential to health, well-being, and independence across the life course. Musculoskeletal conditions including inflammatory joint diseases, osteoarthritis, back pain, osteoporosis, and fragility fractures are among the greatest causes of disability globally imposing a major burden on health and social care and economic impact also through lost productivity. Despite effective ways of preventing, treating, and rehabilitating these problems, lack of priority results in avoidable disability and costs. We consider how the expert community, through lived and learnt experien

Education as a mediating interface in global health: A conceptual synthesis of antimicrobial resistance education.

Often recognised as a determinant of health and key to health communication, education is an underdeveloped concept in global health. This paper develops a conceptual understanding of how educational processes shape engagement with global health challenges, particularly their role in promoting health equity, capability and sustainability. Using antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as an illustrative case, the paper examines how education shapes understandings of health challenges, supports capability development and enables engagement with health governance. Methodologically, the paper adopts an int…

Epidemiology and Genetic Traits of Carbapenemase-Producing Enterobacterales: A Global Threat to Human Health.

Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE) represent an important threat to global health, resulting in an urgent issue in clinical settings. CPE often exhibit a multidrug-resistant (MDR) phenotype, thus reducing the antimicrobial armamentarium, with few antibiotics retaining residual antimicrobial activity against these pathogens. Carbapenemases are divided into three classes (A, B, and D) according to the Ambler classification system. Among these, KPC (class A), NDM, VIM, IMP (class B), and OXA-48-like (class D) represent the most important carbapenemases in terms of diffusion and clinic…

Large language models and global health equity: a roadmap for equitable adoption in LMICs.

UNLABELLED: Large language models (LLMs) have been proposed to address global health inequity by providing accessible and high-quality health care, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). However, despite the early enthusiasm following the release of GPT, development and deployment of LLMs have remained heavily concentrated in high-income countries (HIC), raising concerns that such technology may worsen existing health disparities instead of alleviating them. The most recent LLMs, which include features such as lower cost, and open-source framework, show promise in rebalancin…

Global heatwaves: A scoping review on the trend, characteristics, impacts on air pollution and health.

With the global climate change, heatwave events have become severe challenges to ecological system and human health. This study presents an integrated analysis and summary on the typical heatwave events since 2000, and elucidates the definitions and classifications of heatwaves, global trends in frequency and intensity, regional characteristics and their impacts on air pollution and human health. It reveals that the global frequency and intensity of heatwave events show an increasing trend. During heatwave events, temperature, humidity, solar radiation, and atmospheric circulation factors exer

The declining mental health of the young and the global disappearance of the unhappiness hump shape in age.

Across many studies subjective well-being has followed a U-shape in age, declining until people reach middle-age, only to rebound subsequently. Ill-being has followed a mirror-imaged hump-shape. Using graphical and regression analyses of repeat cross-sectional micro-data from the United States and the United Kingdom, we show this empirical regularity has been replaced by a monotonic decrease in ill-being by age. The reason for the change is the deterioration in young people's mental health both absolutely and relative to older people. Pooling Global Minds data across 44 countries, including th
