Nocardia, an opportunistic, gram-positive, catalase-positive, rod-shaped bacterium found in soil and water, is known to cause infections in humans, predominantly among immunocompromised individuals, through inhalation or direct inoculation. This report details a rare case of a septic joint caused by Nocardia brasiliensis, which subsequently led to cutaneous involvement, in a patient with multiple underlying health issues. The management of this case was complicated by the patient's extensive medical history, including diabetes, chronic urinary tract infections, and recent surgical procedures,

Botulism is a neuroparalytic syndrome resulting from the systemic effects of an exoneurotoxin produced by gram-positive, rod-shaped, spore-forming, obligate anaerobic bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Here, we present the case of a 40-year-old male, presenting with a sudden onset of abdominal pain associated with vomiting. He was admitted for conservative management once the CT of the abdomen and pelvis revealed partial small bowel obstruction with no signs of bowel perforation or ischemia. However, the next day, the patient had a cardiac arrest thought to be secondary to respiratory arrest. Th

Clostridium is a broad genus of anaerobic, spore-forming, rod-shaped, Gram-positive bacteria that can be found in different environments all around the world. The genus includes human and animal pathogens that produce potent exotoxins that cause rapid and potentially fatal diseases responsible for countless human casualties and billion-dollar annual loss to the agricultural sector. Diseases include botulism, tetanus, enterotoxemia, gas gangrene, necrotic enteritis, pseudomembranous colitis, blackleg, and black disease, which are caused by pathogenic Clostridium. Due to their ability to sporula

Five strains of an unknown, multidrug-resistant coryneform, gram-positive rod were isolated from blood, bronchial aspirate, and abscess specimens. Four of the five strains isolated were highly resistant to antimicrobial agents, including beta-lactams, aminoglycosides, macrolides, quinolones, and tetracyclines, except for glycopeptides. In immunocompromised patients, bacteremia associated with this organism was rapidly fatal. This coryneform bacterium was nonmotile, lipophilic, and nonsaccharolytic. Lack of pyrazinamidase activity differentiated this organism from other lipophilic corynebacteri

Cat scratch disease (CSD) is an infectious illness caused by a Gram-negative rod named Bartonella henselae. Typical CSD is characterized by a small skin lesion at the site of a scratch or a bite, followed by regional lymphadenopathy, one to two weeks later. Atypical forms may present as ocular manifestations, neurological manifestations, hepatosplenic involvement and vertebral osteomyelitis. Among neurological complications, encephalopathy is by far the most common. Other neurological manifestations are very rare. We report a case of an 11-year-old boy, with a posterior cervical lymphadenopath

Spondylodiscitis describes an infection of the vertebral body and disc. Clinical presentation is often nonspecific. As a result, imaging plays a crucial role in establishing the diagnosis. The most common associated organism is Staphylococcus aureus. Actinomyces neuii is a gram-positive rod that is primarily known to cause soft tissue infections but has rarely been described in association with spondylodiscitis. At the time of this publication, only 1 other case of A. neuii has been reported in the literature. We present a case report of a diabetic patient diagnosed with spondylodiscitis with

BACKGROUND: Clostridium botulinum is an anaerobic, Gram-positive, rod-shaped bacterium that forms spores and the neurotoxin botulinum. It is best known for its toxin-induced flaccid paralytic disease, which is deadly without correct treatment. In this report, we show a completely different clinical course with fatal outcome.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 37-year-old African man born in Sierra Leone was admitted. After admission, his condition rapidly worsened due to severe septic shock and progressive multiorgan failure. No neurological signs were seen. Despite treatment with antibiotics, fluid resusc

A large subcutaneous mass, formed on the left lower jaw of a 4-month-old Japanese Black male calf, was partially excised for histological and bacteriological examinations. Antibiotic treatment resulted in a good prognosis. Bacteria isolated from the excised material were characterized by weak hemolysis and positive reactions for catalase and oxidase, and were 99% identical to Mannheimia granulomatis strains. The presence of the leukotoxin gene product was demonstrated by polymerase chain reaction amplification. Histological examination showed that the excised material was composed of dense fib

Listeria monocytogenes is a Gram positive pathogen that is ubiquitous in the environment. It is a facultative anaerobic rod that causes listeriosis, a disease with potentially lethal consequences for susceptible individuals. During infection, the pathogen is capable of sequestering metal ions to act as vital biocatalysts in cellular processes. The zinc uptake regulator (ZurR) is predicted to coordinate uptake of zinc from the external environment. An in-frame deletion of the zurR gene resulted in a mutant exhibiting a small colony phenotype and a smaller cell size. The zurR mutant was unaffect

Four strains of a previously unknown, catalase-negative, facultatively anaerobic, gram-positive, rod-shaped organism originating from humans were characterized by biochemical, chemical, and molecular taxonomic methods. The four strains phenotypically closely resembled one another, and although they possessed characteristics consistent with membership in the genus Actinomyces, they differed from all previously recognized species of this genus. The results of comparative 16S rRNA gene sequencing studies demonstrated that the unknown human bacterium was phylogenetically a member of the genus Acti

Two novel bacterial strains, designated as YS3T and YS5T, were isolated from soil collected at Nogo Mountain, Gyeonggi-do, Republic of Korea. Strain YS3T is Gram-positive, aerobic, non-motile and rod-shaped, forming opaque, cream-coloured colonies with smooth surfaces. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed the highest similarity to Pseudarthrobacter humi RMG13T (99.2%) and Pseudarthrobacter siccitolerans 4J27T (99.2%). Strain YS3T grew at 4-35 °C (optimum, 30 °C), at pH 4.0-12.0 (optimum, pH 8.0), and tolerated up to 6% (w/v) NaCl, with optimal growth occurring in

Objective Bacterial colonization of the airway may contribute to the development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Whether airway colonization increases risk for later adverse respiratory outcomes is less clear. We described tracheal aspirate culture results obtained from preterm infants receiving mechanical ventilation at 36 weeks postmenstrual age (PMA) and evaluated the association between bacteria type and the risk for prolonged supplemental oxygen use. Study Design We conducted a retrospective, single-center cohort study comparing infants (1) with and without a tracheal aspirate culture that

Differentiating patients by age and causative bacterial morphology might aid in making the appropriate choice of antimicrobial agent when treating acute uncomplicated cystitis. In this retrospective analysis, the non-susceptibility rates of the causative bacteria to cefcapene-pivoxil (CFPN-PI) and levofloxacin (LVFX) were determined after dividing patients with acute uncomplicated cystitis by age group (15-54 and 55-74 years old) and by bacterial morphology: gram-positive cocci (GPC) or gram-negative rod (GNR). The overall non-susceptibility rates for CFPN-PI and LVFX were 19.4% and 15.3%, res

OBJECTIVE: Sepsis is one of the leading causes of mortality in critically ill patients, and providing a timely diagnosis and early intervention is necessary for successful treatment. Procalcitonin (PCT) may be a better marker of sepsis than conventional inflammatory markers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical utility of the PCT level as a marker of sepsis.
METHODS: Forty-five patients with sepsis, 24 patients with pneumonia who did not meet the SIRS criteria (PN) and 56 controls were enrolled in this study. The levels of PCT and other serum markers were measured, and their uti
